Magistrale. Entendue pour la première fois live en 1962 à l'âge de douze ans.

It's amazing this was recorded in 1955. It's decidedly more transparent than most recent versions. Taut, unsentimental, and clean. Perhaps not the most beautiful, but definitely a benchmark.

This kind of performance just goes to show it's not the advanced recording techniques or the producer or the sophisticated editing, although these help: it is the conductor's genius; his knowledge of the score, his ear for balancing, his pacing of the work and how he inspires his orchestra to play that music. And if he IS a genius and the mikes can hear what HE can hear then it will be a great performance.
