I just came across this video. 9 months too late!
I've been using the VSX Headphones for 2 years with ZERO regrets.
They've turned my entire career around - I've got mixes I'm happy with and most importantly new aspirations - because I can hear where I want to be and it's pushing me to get better all the time instead of just trying to get an 'adequate' mix.
If this microphone idea really works then this is a game changer. I'm sure people are wary of the VSX idea.. It sounds unbelievable - so, instead of a ton of acoustic treatment and $70k speakers like the Barefoot MM27s that are emulated - just a pair of headphones and some software.
I'm sorry, but it just works.
It did take me a couple months to learn them, because I was basically learning many new sets of speakers. But after my ears became accustomed to the speaker surve, the translation was a joy. Taking my mix from studio to my hi-fi speaker setup and it sounding like it was supposed to nearly brought me to tears.
    And now... VMS.
Emulate the sound of expensive microphones - this is a genius idea.
I can only assume that if they do decide to iterate the hardware down the line then everything they've learned from this release would only make it better.
If I can get great results as is - then any improvements are just gravy.

I actually did the same thing, traded the same mic, figured I've been using plugin emulations for years, basically went full digital. I do notice some more sibilance and slightly lower quality from the slate when the capsule is pushed, but I think I still make that trade off everyday just based on the options with it, I found the AKG has better off axis sound. I traded my AKG for a American Strat, so still have a good mic and now a guitar. Win.

I love my ML-1. It's the only mic I use these days. You went straight to all of my favorite emulations, but I do things a bit differently by sometimes using multiple emulations on a single (vocal) track. It creates a hybrid sound that I can't get from any of the individual modeling's.
For anyone who is on the fence about this gear? Get it while it's on sale and make sure to pick up the additional emulations. If you're patient you can wait until they also go on sale. They are worth full price though. Add the Slate Digital All Access Pass and you will be swimming in options.

I simply add more than one emulation to the vocal track and adjust the percentages to taste. It can offer some really tasty tones and effectively create a unique microphone by combining two or more. I've used up to three. Four never seems to work as well but up to 3 can be quite tasty. It doesn't seem to add any latency either. At least not on my PC.

Not really... if you're talking about 11:30, it sounds like a quick/small vocal/voice crack..which is an abrupt transition from one vocal register to another. Like switching gears on a car, but not in a seamless way. The voice kind of have gears too... Vocal fry is more like that that sound from the movie The Grudge. A bubbly effect towards burping (in sound, not physiologically). Voice cracks have been used intentionally in singing to convey that feeling of being broken going from head/chest voice to falsetto and on yodeling.

    • @towardstar
      @towardstar 2 года назад +1

the sqeak is when you go through the passagio, the transition from chest to head voice. you can get a break in the articulation of the vocal glide. practice eliminates it

I own an ML-1 and a pair of ML-2's. I recently recorded about 14 songs with a female singer-songwriter named Meredith. I had her sing through the ML-1 and mic'd the guitar with the ML-2's. I've really just started playing around with the sounds available.
A little history. For a dozen years prior to '92 I was an engineer at Unique Recording, NYC. We had tons of mics. 47's tube and FET, 87's, 251's, 414's and on and on. Tons of everything actually. Racks of Neve pre's and EQ. Heck, a Neve console! Standard Practice was to throw up a bunch of mics, have the singer sing and pick one, maybe two, to print to tape, usually for the entire album. And that was that, FOREVER. Even if you did a shoot out for each song, you were stuck with your selection.
40 years later, I can't possibly remember if the Slate's 47 sounds like the Unique 47's and I DON'T CARE. The amazing value that I have discovered is the ability to pic a mic after the fact. That ALONE is worth the price of admission, which by the way, during a sale was less than a grand for all three mics. I have discovered that Meredith voice sounds better on each song with a different "mic." Loud, soft, up tempo, slow, different sessions, etc. Not only that, but I have changed the mic as the arrangement changed to help it cut. I have changed mics after adding compression to get that whisper in your ear thing that became to strident. I haven't even played with the gtr mic's yet. Joy!
Speaking of the ML-2's, I DO have 57's, RE-20's, SM7's, etc and my original idea was to A/B them, but I soon got bored with this idea, because I DON'T CARE. (see above) I do have one experiment I have left to try tho. You know the old technique of micing a gtr cab with a 57 tight and a Royer a bit back? I want to try it with ONE ML-2, then duplicate the track. Make one a 57 and adjust the proximity to close, make the other a 121 and adjust the proximity further away, maybe a tiny delay, pan to taste.
    I'll let you know.

I have a pair of the silver models that I bought on a black friday deal in 2018. They mostly stay up as overheads and I use the Blackbird 47 and 67 models. The latter has a nice place for a snare without overdoing the cymbals. I think the mic sounds good without the models so at the very least it's always usable. I think the C12 and 251 have a pretty nice top for vocals and acoustic guitar. I frequently do the XY configuration for a "C24" when doing solo acoustic guitar. I also use it with mandolin and it gets a really nice full, bell-like tone. The models also work well with a SM7 in certain cases. It obviously doesn't sound like the models but the eq grooms the SM7 pretty interestingly. I've never used it on electric guitar. The 67 might be worth a try on electric.

Love my ML-1 and it's my main mic now (I also have an ML-2). I closely compared it to my only other LDC, an AKG C414 B-ULS (which is only used if I need other polar patterns). I could hear an added sweetness with an even more enhanced top end with my fav Slate models which I liked more. The C800-M & C12 are my most used models for my kind of vocals where I'm looking for clarity without harshness, especially for falsetto or mix.
I want the models to be as close to the originals as possible because I want to learn the flavour that each mic can bring but the absolute most important fact is that the sound quality is very good and I think there is something the modelling of subtle tube compression and saturation adds that sounds better than the other mics I have. Not everyone can go and shoot out 20 mics at Vintage King like Warren has done!
For good or bad, I have changed the mic model on numerous mixes right near the end of mixing to find the best sound. Maybe for the most experienced engineers with the recording budget to match, this isn't an advantage.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have a great voice, but this mic showed me how important it is to have the right mic for the source. I was able to pick a mic model that took away all the stuff I hated that I struggled with trying to remove with eq.

I had the ML-1 for a few years now. The 251 emulation alone is worth the cost of entry. Helps with a quick workflow, and also not mentioned here.. A lot of the Slate stuff has near zero latency with their plugins. So you can track live with all this on. And when I say all this on ... I mean everything in the VMR plugin (eq's comps, gates, etc) all live to a cue mix for the artist to hear their vocal in all its glory. no uad card, or hdx system needed.

Owned one and liked it a lot (so much that I bought all the expansions), but once I upgraded to HDX for the Hybrid Engine it became useless because the plugin isn't AAX DSP. Sold it a few months back and got a WA87 and WA8000. At some point I'll check out the Townsend Labs since it supports AAX DSP.

I have a pair I use for drum overheads, and I wish they had a U87 emulation for this but no complaints with what they do have. I also use one of them for vocal overdubs which is great for testing different sounds without needing to set up multiple mics, and I have their preamp for it too so I can also use their preamp emulations. I have used some of the mics they model previously so I have some frame of reference for a few, but the beautiful thing is it doesn't actually matter how accurate it sounds like a U47 or whatever, and regardless of the fact that every U47 will sound a little different, there's so many options you're bound to find a good match for your source just by listening and comparing, and like any other mic you'll learn what each of them do to the sound so you can make informed decisions about how best to use each of them.

Hey Warren, I know you mentioned that Slate gave you 2 mics to try and give away, but I was wondering if this video was sponsored by them (i.e, they paid you), or they just sponsored the give away? The reason I ask is that they emailed me this video and I didn't see any disclosure about it. I've wondered this in the past about some of the Lewitt videos too, but this is the first time asking. As a consumer and long time viewer of your channel, it's always good to know when something is an ad vs your own opinion. I believe it's also the law to disclose this. Hope you don't mind me asking. Thanks!

that's the mark of a great song, you can do anything to it, and it still sounds good. liked your arpeggio choices - on the prechorus i would have ditched the last note, though. i think mics with good body and an open top work best for her voice, darkened a bit with the pre. really cool guitar tone. and amazingly good sound on the drums with just those two mics. other than the missing stereo image, i think that, with a little processing, that sound is incredibly transformable for so many different styles, and it makes mixing drums a breeze. maybe a stereo pair for the overheads would solve the stereo problem. but it's true you need a drummer that can do the cymbal mix in the performance.

Brilliant presentation as usual Warren :-) re Tech...I bought the liquid channel when it firat came out...cost more than an avalon at the time. It has a really great pre...the one with no emulations hehe. Just too many options...could have sold the avalon for more than i paid for it.. the take away is...minimise your options and learn your gear exceedingly well. I have so many mics and options but at the end of the day i use a very versed handful.of options. Do you reeaally know what a diff high end cables make as well as knowing the impedance loading of your pres??? The amount of depth even in old school tube pre...the interdependence is wild. The slate sounds good but just my 3c...too many options can be counter productive...the liquid channel still sounds great but its obselete tech that im wait for a capacitor to dry out and then throw in the bin because its too dear to repair vs sebatron tube pre...still just as brilliant and same $ value 20 years later. Do yiurself a favour...stop buying everything...its amazing what you can do with an sm57 into analysis plus/vovox cable and a good pre...if you get my drift. Sometimes i think all the toys and perfection are killing music :-)

Brauner use vovox for a reason...Mr Neve built 'air' into the isa based on impedance knowledge etc ;-) eg an nt1a plugged into a vovox into a sebatron valve with a lot of valve gain becomes a silky detailed beauty...plug into a cheap cable into 'air' on a clartett sounds brittle and sibilant;-)
