Wow, I just saw this video come up on my recommended and I had to watch it. I'm from Columbus, still live here. I really wish you had shown a little bit more of our downtown area, especially the Visitor's Welcome Center. It was childhood home of "Tennessee" Williams. That church you showed in the background when talking about Catfish Alley is St Paul's Episcopal, and Williams grandfather was the Rector. The home was the former rectory of the church. That church also has a stain glass window that was designed and signed by Tiffany himself. That Statue of Liberty replica was placed by the Boy Scouts on their 40th anniversary in 1950. And you used to be able to get closer to the train; I have an old photo of my softball team posed in front of the train. They had to fence it off to keep people from vandalizing it. One more thing; we have so many amazing houses because Columbus was never ransacked during the Civil War. Many of the houses here served as hospitals, where soldiers from both sides were treated. We had many Union soldiers buried in Friendship Cemetery (they have since been relocated to Shiloh), and the ladies of the time decorated both Confederate and Union graves. The poem, "The Blue and the Gray" is about that action, and is the basis of our national Memorial Day. That courthouse statue someone else mentioned has been removed (like, two years ago) to a spot amongst the Confederate graves in Friendship Cemetery.
Lol don’t think many people have said “cool places” and Columbus Ms in the same sentence. Outside of its History that is, if you go for that there’s tons.
Yeah I attended the historic Franklin academy Mississippi first public school Gregorian Greek revival design is still standing after over 100 years and still a stunning building to look at even today I first attended in 1977 til 1980 yes I remember the rivalry of football between the lee high generals and the Caldwell bobcats and going to the city auditorium afterwards and dancing and watching the Greek fraternity step shows like the atomic dawgs Hollywood knights breakers and the occasional bands that played there Ah yes those were the days of the late 70$ early 80$ a decade I’ll never forget
I grew up there in ol Columbus myself. I was out in New Hope but my Pop worked at the W. If I remember right that was or is Lee's ballfield there. Mom worked at Sears in Leigh Mall. Used to be one of the first big video arcades across the street called Two Bits. This was in the early 80's so all we had was Alladins Castle up till that point in the mall. I was a video game junkie so I guess I would remember that s***...lol. Columbus was a cool old town back when I was there from 76 to 87 when I left and came to Florida. I remember riding by that ol train everytime I came into town down 82. That used to be Probst Park with the ball fields and such. That would flood like crazy, the entire park and I think the only part not under water was the train.....lol. Anyways, cool walk down memberberry lane Micah, thanks!
I remember when the park had a pool. I grew up 2 houses away from the pool. The park had a well with the coldest water. We had to leave our house a couple of times due to flooding...the entire park was flooded! The train wasn't fenced in & you could actually walk up & go into one of the cars. We eventually moved to New Hope & then, to Steens. My mom worked at Sears too!! She worked in the office part for several years.
Great video.... The trucker at beginning of video was just saying hello... He is a big world of Micah fan .... Ha ha ... Small Towns usually have great history that is still intact... Can see what things looked like in the past..... Thanks for sharing... take care... Have a great day.....Thanks..👍👍👍
Great video. I'm from Columbus, Mississippi, but I am currently living in Washington State. I'm elated to see this video of my ole home town. There's no place like home! Kudos 👏
Looks like a neat town. The story about catfish alley was really interesting, and I loved the train and the abandoned go kart track and gas station. That kind of stuff excites me.
That abandoned football field at the beginning of the video is known locally as the "Mag Bowl" and is attached to the back side of Franklin Academy, which was the first public school in the state of Mississippi.
My hometown lol… carts and clubs was go karts and batting cages I used to ride my bike down there and hit in the cages… those fields behind the train used to be the softball fields and I was trying to show off and jumping the speed bumps on my bike on the way to one of my games and my bat bag went through my front spokes and I flew over the handlebars lol… trying to show out and ended up just getting laughed at
We are looking to finally buy a home soon, and are still narrowing down towns to choose from. Columbus has been on our list for a while. Thank you for the tour. Its remained on our top 5 for about the whole time. We work from home, so a commute isn't a concern, but good internet is. Any Columbus residents can let me know how it is? We have three remote workers in the house, so we need REALLY good internet. Appreciate any suggestions
GHS Graphics was a screen printing and skateboard shop for many years, and you are correct. If those walls could talk, they would tell all kinds of sordid tales. Especially in the basement.
That was actually shot in Georgia based on the Mississippi town of Sparta which is fictional when you see the opening of in the heat of the night tv series that’s just what the town of picayune Mississippi looks like downtown come on down and you’ll be shocked at our hospitality and friendship
@@rosieclark3661 that's true. Because the 1st season was filmed in Louisiana near Baton Rouge. But after that, Covington, GA. A lot of TV shows and movies are still being filmed there!✌️

Wow !!! I have been there before. Nice place to visit. The video would have been good if you had not shown the worse places in that city. Vacant lots etc. At least you got the train on there. Not a total loss. That city had beautiful Antebellum homes and they show them in April every year. When I went there they also had Tales of the Crypt witch was interesting also in April.

Every video in Mississippi, I can hear that southern drawl creeping back into your accent...lol. I'm the same way. Another awesome video!
Columbus Mississippi is still beautiful and I misses it....greetings from Kansas.....can't wait to visit home...thanks soo very much💯👈🏾👈🏾
Wow, 20,000 leagues was one of my fav movies. That's pretty neat Disney history. Thanks for sharing.
I always really dig it when you head home and film these really cool places that are less explored. Looking forward to what's next!

Good job , thanks
Carts and clubs is definitely missed. Mini golf, batting cage, and go carts. Popular in the early mid 90s
Yes sir that's my home. The stadium we called the bowl.

When I think of Mississippi, I think of ln Heat Of The Night tv show!🙂

The fence is around the train because people were destroying it. It use to be wide open.

There are no people in this town?
I hear there's no public transportation there. None.😲
Columbus really isn't a small town. You're just showing about 2 city blocks.
Nice place to visit for a day. Not a nice place to visit for 2 days, let alone love.
You claim to be from here but don't know what carts and clubs was?? Lol nope
This is one of the worse towns in Mississippi
wrong!!!!!!!!
