  • There is a song that no one on Earth seems to know where it comes from. This mystery goes back over 35 years and even the combined might of the internet cannot seem to solve the mystery of this song’s illusive origin. We don’t know the song’s true name, the artist, who recorded it, what album it was on if any, where it was originally recorded, we know literally nothing.
It's been called "Like the Wind", but that's just the name the internet has decided on, we don't know the real name or the artist.
EDIT: HUUUUGE UPDATE!!! 7StringGuitarPlayer found the outro song!!!! Thank you so much my friend! This scratches a 20 year old itch and I can finally hear the whole song!
It's called "Day in Day Out" by Mary Beats Jane! - • VHS VCR Interference N...
Thank you so much 7stringguitarplayer! Shoot this guy a sub and listen to his awesome riffs he's posted on his channel!! / @7stringguitarplayer
[UPDATE 1/9/2020] The final 30 seconds of the video which was purely a clip of the song referenced at the end of the script has been both recently identified and uploaded into the Content ID system and therefore had to be trimmed. Back in the late 80's and early 90's (89-92) there were a group of us foreigners living in and around Fujisawa, Japan. Most of us were teaching english (ESL). I think I know who this is. Kai Becker. He had a small home studio and called himself GGG for german guitar god. Almost all of us were guitarists and would play in the bars for free, just for fun. Kai was probably the better player of all of us and had gone to a school for both guitar and recording. After I made fun of his first recording he brought to a bar (song was called: do ya wanna dance with me...ya ya) and he overheard a Japanese music professional say to me "You are the best guitarist here" He pretty much went straight home and began working on this. I recognize the voice and play style, phrasing. Seems like I have heard this before. I remember he processed the vocals by putting it through a Korg reverb and something else. His voice wasn't naturally so low. If I recall he used the technique of recording the Vs at a slightly higher tempo then slowing the V track down and THEN mixing down with the instrumentation. I had a programmable Yamaha drum machine back then (still have it) and I think he had the same one. Sounds like it.

My grandfather's a vocalist and guitarist who informally retired last year, in his mid 60s. The 1980s was his era of music, and he's been the father figure in my life, so 1980s-2000s music was something I grew up with. After watching this video the first time, I immediately knew I had to show "Like the Wind" to him. While neither of us could identify the song or performer, watching my grandfather listen to this song was interesting. We sat in the living room and listened to it twice, just to see if anything came to mind. We both recognised the vocals, somewhat, but neither of us can place who they belonged to.
The theory I would like to raise, after discussing it with my grandfather, is that this might have been an example of a band sending in a demo tape of a mostly finished song. The radio station then aired it as a platform for the band to gauge interest in whether or not to polish the recording. Something that we both noted upon listening to it was that the vocals seemed... misplaced, in a way. It sounds like whoever mixed the audio, layered the instrumental of the song over the vocals, instead of the other way around. The vocals are quiet, and difficult to make out, whilst the instruments are as close to crystal clear as you can get from a 1980s era recording like this.
This is a very interesting mystery, as I've always considered music to be the one medium where practically everything is very well archived, and it's a medium that has personal value to me as the granddaughter of a musician. I hope, one day, that we can discover the origin of this song.

What if it's a song from a soundtrack from a movie that never released the soundtrack to the public? I remember in the 80s hearing songs in movies or played on the radio and never being able to find them because the movie did poorly and they they didn't send money on making an album. But when I did find obscure soundtracks, they tended to be German or Japanese imports.

One example of such thing I could think of would be the soundtracks in a really cheesy 80's action flick called _Ninja III: The Domination_ which includes great tracks such as Sally Zapulla's Love Bites. Hovever, the song was listed in the end credits, just not released to the public by the company label.

I had the same 'from a movie soundtrack' was the same thought I had while listening to the song. Would make sense if the movie never got big/released so the song lay forgotten. I could also see a case that maybe the studio decided to go with a different band/song for the bit and this track just sat around before eventually finding it's way out into the world...

In the 80's they had small recording studios in shopping malls where you and your friends could walk in and record. They had voice synths and generic music. You could bring your own stuff too. This sounds exactly like a recording my friends and I made, just better. I'll also add, if it was somewhat good they'd play it on the local channel on an ametuer artist show.

@Corby Dorian Have you ever heard any demo from the 80's? If anything, the quality and production value of this are much too high to actually be a demo. You used to record those with nothing but a single tape recorder which often had microphones not specialized for music but plain speech. It sounded like shit. Indeed I think the vocals came into this song in a different setting from the instrumental as well, but still very much could have been a demo from the 80s.

Theory: Mystery Song Originated In East Germany
    1. The song was written and performed by an underground band in East Germany. The lyrics of the song have the "feel" of someone living in a totalitarian society dreaming about escaping to freedom. The song has allusions to the Berlin Wall, underground tunnels and subversion against a totalitarian regime.
    2. Someone smuggled a recording of the song into West Germany and somehow it made it's way to a German radio station where it got played.
    3. The band who made the song were arrested by the East German secret police and disappeared. They were either executed or sent to a Siberian gulag for making "illegal" Western music which was banned in the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries. Any other copies of the song were considered treasonous propaganda and destroyed.

Having been a radio deejay, musician, music producer, and record collector, this is a real mystery, since I do recall hearing this song before, on a Los Angeles FM radio station, either KMET or KLOS, in the mid-1980s. Wow.
It has that 1980-85 era sound, and of my favorite musical genre, Progressive Rock. A very memorable tune! Love its structure, instruments, and lyrics! In the, early '80s, Prog, which had been excitedly popular in the 1970s, was then being absorbed into the New Wave Rock scene, with excellent bands like Night Ranger, Strange Advance, Saga, etc. It sounds like it fits in that groove.

It's not hard to imagine some little band back in the 80s recording a song, never to get back together again and move on towards different paths. I have a similar experience. Recorded a little song in a church recording studio with some friends in high school. Sounded pretty decent, but we never pursued music and went on different paths, but somewhere there is a recording of our music. I'm the only one that's technologically versed and keeps on the internet, but if I weren't, no one would be around to claim the song if it were blasted around the web. Could be a similar situation with this song?

It didn't exist on the internet and this guy was going insane trying to find it. Rolling Stone wasn't even able to help... (none of this is real, I just wanted to make my own story and maybe someone else will like it to) Daniel Courtley (Vocals) Don Pickney (guitar) Sam Odberg (bass) Tim Bates (drums) Tom Spacey (keyboard) all members for the upcoming band Visions. A week after releasing their first album titled Whisper For Me, Daniel and Tim died in a car crash, Don and Sam died in a house fire, and Tom went missing. The only living person who knew any of them is Tim's brother Andrew, and he refused to give any information besides this except from an interview: "it was cursed from the beginning. As they were recording the songs Don's parents died, Sam had a divorce, and Daniel lost his little sister. After the album was made they had the first track broadcasted, and the physical album disappeared. After everyone in the band was gone, everyone outside of it started to die or disappear aswell, and I know if I tell you anything I'll be next." A month later Andrew was found dead in his home, with a pure black Vinyl sleeve with "Whisper For Me" written on the front in bold white writing. Unfortunately, it was empty. The band obviously never put anything else out, and the vinyl is lost to time, the sleeve was buried with Andrew, and no other songs have been found besides this one.

It's actually quite an unremarkable song for the period. Having lived through the early 80's... a time when the explosion of new sounds made a huge impact on social dynamics... I immediately recognized the sound as being of that period.
There are a number of similarities to the sounds of other bands at that time. Most notably, the Platinum Blonde signature guitar sound, which doesn't permeate nearly as much, but which is present from start to finish.
Until I heard the vocals, I thought maybe it was from England, where so many of the popular bands of that era came from. The singing seems more like what you could expect to come out if Germany, Poland or Eastern Europe. Keep in mind that it was also the height of the Cold War with the CCCP (USSR); and the music scene behind the iron curtain lagged behind what the West was experiencing. Musicians in all Communist controled countries were heavily inspired and influenced by the sounds they heard coming across the radio waves. It wasn't unusual for them to mimic the styles and sounds, but not having access to the same equipment/instruments dampened the final product.
In the West, cutting edge technology was far easier to obtain. The musical instruments and recording equipment weren't the same. That affected the sound that a band could achieve.
Back to the vocals: While visiting relatives in Germany, my uncle would play his radio, tuned to stations in Berlin and East Germany. I recall hearing songs that has similar vocal track: a few men, singing with low, rich tones, but almost in a monotonous manner. This may be indicative of the culture where such singing styles were prevalent.

Plus, how good of a good feeling to know that people love your song so much they cannot get it out of their head and make it a life mission to track down who you are… LOL, so cool! Thank you for posting a “lighthearted“ mystery. Usually I enjoy true crime and darker things but this was a much needed relief from that as life this week has been dark enough. Stay safe everyone

  • @Pipkiablo

I have a theory...perhaps it was written by a band local to the area where the radio station broadcasted. Sometimes radio stations might play songs from unknown bands known only locally, particularly back before they became far more mainstream and were free to play almost anything they fancied. As for why they haven't been found, perhaps the artist either has no idea anyone's looking for the origins of their song...or they're tragically deceased. This was almost 40 years ago. They could have gotten old or sick or been involved in a tragic accident. There have been many older bands I gained interest in only to discover that they only released one or two albums before breaking up or that key members died, causing the band to lose interest in continuing.
Also I hope someone finds the artist at some point. I really like it. I might have to yoink a copy of it.

the whole thing reminds me of the story of the beatles album from an alternate reality called "everyday chemistry". apparently the beatles didnt break up in the other reality and this album was put out in that reality but somehow made its way to ours.
turns out it was just an extremely clever mish-mash of beatles songs just reorganized into original songs using small samples of many songs to create their sound.
thats what i think this is. another well done mish-mash of 80s music.

I'm very skeptical this is an actual song from the 80s. On first listen I got a strong Fleetwood Mac vibe from some of the beat. It could have been made with various backing tracks spliced together. The vocals don't match up with the rest of the song very well in my opinion. I taped a lot of songs of the radio in the 80s and I don't remember any of them sounding anywhere near this clear even with my semi professional JVC deck and this tape would be 20+ years old as of the 2007 clip posting.

(Edit: this wasn't intended to be a reply. I apologize.)
Why do people keep claiming it's AI? At no point during the song's alleged capture, rediscovery, posting online, or even at the time of this comment, has AI been sophisticated enough to create a full coherent song at this level of quality. You can listen to recent 'AI extended songs' and see that for yourself, it ALWAYS devolves into hellish incoherent samples.
As for this being a mashup, well, that doesn't mean anything if we still haven't found the source for the vocals.
I am on the side that we're not likely to find the song's true origin. Not unless there's some crate-digger going to boot-sales in and around Germany who may come across a decrepit cassette in a box of junk. If the artist hasn't come forward yet, after all the coverage the track has received, they likely won't or can't for one reason or another.

    Take the consequence of leaving
    There's no space
    There's no tomorrow
    There's no sent communications
Check it in, check it out
Or the sun will never shine
    They're a long way away
In the subways of your mind
    Like the wind
    You're going somewhere
Let a smile be your companion
    There's no place
    And there's no sorrow
Hear the young and restless dreaming
Check it in, check it out
Where the sun will never shine
    They're a long way away
In the subways of your mind
Check it in, check it out
Or the sun will never shine
    They're a long way away
In the subways of your mind
Check it in, check it out
    It's the summer blues
Tear it in, tear it out
    It's the real excuse

There is this song by a man named Christopher Cross, he did a song called Ride like the wind.
Upon listening to it, though its more polished and clean. Though the beat is slightly different, it still matches the beat heard here.
This COULD be an early version of the song BEFORE the more polished Ride like the wind was created.

Nah, not the Sisters. Am a big fan, especially of their early period, which sounded nothing like this. Their early period is like a mixture of Berlin period Bowie, Joy Division and early the Psychedelic Furs. Also, they were heavily bootlegged throughout the 80s, with many unofficially released songs doing the rounds (Driver, Good Things, Wide Receiver, etc). If this were in any way associated with the Sisters, their fans would be all over it already (like the obscure techno album by SSV that was never officially released: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSV_(band) ).

I was a musician myself and have a good ear for identifying music. The style of this song reminds me of what was called "Ruta Del Bacalao" that existed in the 80' in Valencia, Spain. It was a time when Valencia was the go to place for dance clubs, way before Ibiza took the lead.
It was a musical movement fueled by high quantities of mescaline, alcohol and hashish. People from different parts of Spain and Europe (in my case from Italy), travelled back and forth between their place and Valencia to take part in a party that started Friday night and continued uninterrupted until Monday morning, no sleep.
The name "Ruta Del Bacalao" (translated into English as Cod Route) was given at the time because at the end of the 3-day party, that unfolded between various bars, night clubs and beach bars with DJs, the participants returned to their place of residence with a face resembling a dead cod, due to the combination of high levels of consumptions of alcohol, mescaline, hashish and lack of sleep. Those who could, would travel back to Valencia the next Friday to start all over again, thus creating a sort of route.
The timing of the release of the song, as mentioned in your video, coincides exactly with the first years of the "Ruta del Bacalao". After the first few years of the 80' the "Ruta" continued, but the drugs changed and so did the music style, tending more and more towards electronic and finally techno music.
During the early 80' many bands sprung up and disappeared in Spain to cater to the musical taste of this crowd... and shared the same lifestyle. So it is very possible that the band members who released this song might be dead or in some psychiatric ward by now.
That's probably why it has been impossible to find out who they are up until now.
I just sent the link to this video to a friend of mine who's the greatest expert of the "Ruta" I know, you might hear back from him sooner or later.
Meanwhile I subscribed to your channel.

Back in 80s and 90s there were some underground music bands that recorded music at home and never published. Some cool local djs who knew the bands would air their stuff but you would never be able to find the songs. Some of them were great. This happened specially in ussr, east germany, eastern block, middle east, and places like that. But you would think the dj would remember this, unless he received the track from another dj who received it from the artist. If thats the case, unless the artist is still alive or even cares, or somehow stumbles upon this video we will never know.

This is a damn good recording for an early 80's German radio rip. It's an absolute banger, & I hope we find whoever sang this. You'd be surprised how many semi-popular songs got completely forgotten after a summer of constant playing, especially in the pre-internet age. We tend to only hear the 'absolute best of' (AKA best-selling) songs of certain decades once they become 'oldies...' If you've ever thought "Damn, music was way better back then!" it's probably because you weren't there to witness the crap or blah-tastic lows. While I like this song, it's style is awful familiar to the Depeche Mode style popular in Germany back then, so it likely was forgotten in favor of the bigger hits.
Did music companies do that thing back then where they'd pay DJs/stations a certain amount to keep a song regularly playing? I know my mom said that's how 70's radio in Detroit used to work in some areas, but idk if that's true. Maybe without becoming insanely popular in a year with already big hits, this song couldn't afford to be spoon-fed to us like whatever overplayed garbage big-fat-record-label put out. So, maybe that meas they were a local band that acted as their own label, or worked under a small local label.

If you don’t know them, check out their song “Stranger”, or “A Day”, from their first album (I think), from back in the

Their newer stuff was pretty damned good, too- check out the songs “Obsession” and “Evelyn”, and then from around 1999, “Jasmine And Rose”, which I at first thought was the Sisters Of Mercy, as it totally sounded like them. I'm from that era, and it typically sounds like just another band from that era. I would be amazed if you found the composer and performer if they're one and the same. There is a chance this band may have died with the death of the musician. AIDS and drugs destroyed a number of aspiring musicians around that period. This sounds VERY difficult. You'll just have to see if the right person can come along and remember that track. You've got yourself a real mystery. I'm writing this for Mike as a tribute to him. He was an aspiring musician who acquired AIDS around the late 80's and committed suicide because he was afraid of a slow painful death. I thought his music had potential, but it just wasn't his time.

When I couldn't find the music on RUclips I uploaded it (So I have some somewhat obscure 90's Christian techno and stuff that isn't anywhere else online) I was a DJ at my college radio station for 2 summers in 99 and 2000 and they had a "Crap Bin" of music that bands would send trying to get airtime. The crap bin was free for DJs and so I would come home with box fulls of CDs of junk no one has ever heard of. So I know some pretty obscure stuff...Sorry though...this song just sounds like an unknown band riding the pop 80's rock & new wave

i would wager that this was just some kids fooling around in a basement making music. tons of small basement punk bands in the 80s trying to hop onboard the depeche mode-esque train, *particularly* in germany at that time. the new wave scene was huge, and small local bands were popping up everywhere. maybe they sent it to the local radio station, who thought it was good and played it, then they never really made anything else that got preserved. if it was just some teenagers fooling around in a very amateur short-lived high school or early college band, then in the modern day they may never have heard of this mystery surrounding their song since they'd be middle aged now and possibly not very internet savvy, and their band may never have gotten big enough to actually put its name anywhere official. i honestly can't imagine it's anything else.
