Investigating Cannibalism in Restaurants [Part 1]

- In 2014, news media around the world began reporting about a hotel in Onitsha, Anambra State in Nigeria, saying police had shut the hotel down after it was discovered that the restaurant was serving human flesh.
This video began production in June of 2020 as what I thought would be a fun little short video debunking claims about the ludicrous notion that cannibalism restaurants actually existed. What I stumbled upon turned this into a fun short video with a short turnaround to improve my upload frequency into the single craziest story I think I've ever uncovered.
What you'll find in this film you're watching today is a story about how rumors or a cannibalism restaurant were potentially used as cover for government corruption leading all the way to the highest office in the Nigerian government. It's a story of hostile business rivalries where a potentially corrupt politician who ran as Vice President of Nigeria in 2019 used his significant influence to sabotage and destroy a business rival. A politician who was the former governor of the state, accused of embezzling millions of government funds into his family's private business, was impeached, and used his influence to reinstate him in his government position while the people of Nigeria adore him, completely clueless to the character of the man he really might be.

The information he was presenting almost gets lost in it all. The end about the kids chat site, the issue was there too.

Such critical reminders to do real research - both as readers and as reporters. We can’t just automatically trust details from “trustworthy” sources who have also just trusted details from other sources without due diligence. Thank you for doing the lord’s work, per se 🙌🏻

Part of creating content for RUclips that keeps people engaged is dangling that carrot and delivering on the drama (this is basic human psychology; people come back for this). The key in YOUR accusation is the word, “veiled.” He not only got much further along putting the facts together (where outlets even at the caliber of BBC failed), he didn’t just give it a clean wrap - and he could’ve safely done that. Do we KNOW that a certain self-given title means the owner is a pagan priest, let alone for an ancient sect notorious for cannibalism? Of course not, but to present the possibility - the brief twist in the story you consider, “veiled,” accusation - is totally fair game and actually GOOD journalism. Next time you’re watching any true crime or mystery documentary, note how many different possibilities they list off just for thorough exploration - half of which we know off of the bat probably aren’t true. The fact is, this situation is probably more complex and more nuanced than we can even imagine from our corners of the world. What’s your end game in attacking the *best*, most succinct coverage on this particular rabbithole? What could’ve been done better, in your opinion, and what qualifies you to determine this? Those aren’t loaded questions, I’m genuinely curious, based on this comment and your other root comment on the video.
While we can say he did a little research, he still leaned into the bogus story and said since things he can't back up. He knew he should've dug deeper but just kinda let it be. I don't know if it's because if he did push the whole intrigue fell apart but that's kinda feeding into the problem. Just because it's not as macabre or interesting, it didn't stop being the truth.

Obi is being held before a panel after being petitioned by Bonaventure Mokwe for ties to SARS. On January 19th of 2013, there were roughly 35 bodies found floating down the Ezu river. This started being investigated due to protest from Nigerians about police brutality and impunity. I'm sure you know this already or maybe won't see this comment, but this video was really interesting and it goes really deep. Also, incredible production value.

Me too! I want to see the scrapped footage, especially the Los Angeles/Hollywood cannibal restaurant since so many people are certain that one is real and I’ve always been a skeptic. There is a website for it so people assume it’s real. I thought it was a spoof site.

This seems so rare, but i am gonna bet there are other places like this or worse in the world, they just haven't got the attention. I don't know if this needs to be exposed or dealt in other ways cause the people organising these things may be in for the fame, money, etc. But we need to come together and fight this and other evils of the world. I was about to comment that The Independent was one of the best British newspapers, certainly my preferred newspaper, until the print edition was shut down and the staff gutted. Now it's little better than the Daily Mail's website or the gossip section of Buzzfeed. It's no surprise that they would run with an unverified story, but when you said the BBC and any number of other reliable sources ran with the story as well, my heart sank. The constant need for new content and clicks is really putting a strain on understaffed outlets and this is the outcome - one man's reputation trashed after his livelihood was stolen, and no consequences for the powerful man who put the story out there in the first place, because as Terry Pratchett said, a lie can run around the world before the truth can put its boots on. A salacious lie is always more interesting than a relatively humdrum truth, so which one are you going to repeat? Thank you for putting so much time and effort into researching the truth behind this story.

Researching something in your own area is difficult enough, but being able to gather this much info about something that is obviously being suppressed and practically on the other side of the world is wildly impressive

I watch a lot of channels with similar content- That Chapter, Nexpo, Reignbot, Night Mind, Barely Sociable, Lazy Masquerade, Mr. Nightmare, etc...- but I think you might possibly have the most incredible editing skills out of all of them. The way you use your talents with editing to help define the narrative from a visual standpoint really blows me away. Keep it going!

It's different than Nightdocs and co. type of content but it's a great documentary nonetheless.

This whole video brought me back to my roots in late 2000's nihilistic/noir introspective and brooding filmography. You'll always be one of my favorite content creators, and I can't wait to see how many people will grow up to tell their kids about RUclips and The Kids Chat documentaries.
This video was so well made, holy shit. The audio, the editing, and good lord the amount of copious research and work and passion put into this just blew me away. I don't know much about editing and audio, but those still stood out to me as PHENOMENAL. Just, damn dude! This is amazing!

Wait, wait, wait... you do the music too?!? Love it, my husband is a professional studio lead guitarist who works with a lot of metal bands and whoever was shredding was fantastic, the vocals kicked ass too. Very impressed. I have a feeling that you're going to blow up and get a million subscribers quickly!
While I was working in Torrance with the disabled we ate at a small mom and pop restaurant. They were so nice to my clients and asked us to return the next week. When we returned a week later the male owner was extremely rude as he fed the clients we brought that day. A month or so later we found out in the newspaper that the male owner “Pop” had killed “Mom”, stored the body in the walk in, and proceeded to cut her up and feed her to customers the same day we ate there......
Now that's a unique story too bad the handicapped people don't have much an audience to share their cannibalism stories with 😭

I worked in the news media. This is very common. Most media groups & subsidiaries assume the original broadcasting agency did the necessary work expected by journalists.
Problem is most (if not all) major media outlets are more concerned with profits than the truth. This is why trusting the media is hilarious in my personal opinion.

This reminds me of that old tale.
(Note: this the version I remember, and details may differ from other variations)
The one one where an ill woman is afraid of death. She wants to find a where no one dies. She comes up with idea if she finds a village with no graves; it would mean no resident will have died there.
So, she asks her son to find a village with no graves.
He begins his search, and checks every village he comes across during his journey, asking,
“Where does your village keep their graves?”
After many month of searching, it would seem he has checked every village, and no such village exists. The son begins his journey home.
A few days into his journey he comes upon a tiny village. He decides to stop there to rest.
Upon entering the town, he realizes. It is one, it would seem, that he had missed. With hope rekindled, he heads to the inn of the village.
He asks the inn-keeper, “Where does your village keep their graves?”
The keeper replies, “I am afraid we have no place, for we have no graves.”
Euphoric, the son makes the journey home, resolving to make two trips. One to bring his mother, and one to bring their belongings; so that she may arrive quickly before her affliction acquaints her with the icy embrace of death.
He succeeds in bringing his mother to the town and promises to return with their things.
When he does, he cannot find his mother. The son elects to go tavern, believing food and drink will banish any fog that may be obstructing his mind.
He served with a meat he has never seen before. The son stops the tavern-keeper and asks, “Have you seen my mother; where is she?”
The tavern-keeper gestures to the foreign meat, “That is a piece of her thigh.”
Fear seizes his heart and lungs.
The son would then learn that when someone in the village fell ill; they would be killed, and their remains eaten.
That was the true reason the village had no graves.
The son left, encumbered by heavy grief but propelled by horror, under the shadow of black night.

Thanks for this dark tale. This reminds me of the first time I had tofu, I knew it wasn't fish yet the person beside me thought so. We were at a Chinese Christian Church in Savannah,ga. It's still odd to me how people can't tell meats apart.

Dear... your content is interesting, but the presentation could be better, tbh.
The disgusting background sound effect, swelling up in volume, starting at 8:52 in this video... the "music", that is constantly too loud and distracting in comparison to your text... not sticking to the story, but interrupting yourself almost 10 minutes into it to talk about your research process and explain, why you're doing something different now etc. - that just prevents me from getting immersed. I found it very hard to ge through the video, and it's not because of you or your content.
I came here from Nexpo and ReignBot, both of which I like a lot. Nexpo has a very monotonous, almost robotic voice, but he as well as ReignBot use far less obnoxious effects and make sure not to take the audience out of the story, once it has started.
Please look into this. I want you to succeed and I believe you can. Don't let these details ruin your videos.

Imo this was well done but over dramatic and instead of keeping us involved in the story we get these odd breaks in between the research.
I'm still a huge fan and see a lot of potential in Night Docs.
If you want wikapedia articles read to you with no creative or theatrical effort then go find one of the thousands of channels that do that. This is a unique style of film. Obviously not for everyone.
