  • Here Is The True Story From What I Have Un-Covered.
In France During World War II
A Motorcycle/Moped Company Was Conceived Called 'Solex'
A Prototype Model Was Made in 1941
They launched their first moped model in 1946
1946: A 45 cc model, of which many evolution's were made, with a 45 cc engine developing 0.4 hp (0.30 kW) and no clutch, the engine has to be restarted every time the rider comes to a stop
1953: Model 330 with a 49 cc engine and 0.5 hp (0.37 kW) using the same frame as the 45 but boosting power
1955: Model 660 with a new dedicated bicycle frame, but an unchanged engine
1957: Model 1010 updates the engine
    1958: Model 1400
1959: Model 1700 uses the same frame as the previous version but introduce an automatic clutch and air cooling of the engine
The Key Part Here IS '1959'
"The Model 1700 was the first one that had an automatic clutch and air cooling of the engine".
Now 'Cazenave' Motorcycles had by then (before 1959) realised where 'Solex' who was doing extremely well with their model's had made a big mistake.
Right from day one All 'Solex' Models had a built in problem,
    NO AUTOMATIC CLUTCH/COOLING PROBLEM.
This meant when you was riding any of their mopeds, when you had to come to a stop, cross roads/lights etc you had to pull the lever to stop the engine driving the front wheel OR you would keep going. If you hit the brakes you could/would stop/BUT stall the engine.
A Fatal flaw which could be dangerous.
So what 'Cazenave' did was Buy one of the models from 'Solex' and
Redesign/develop it with a better engine and automatic clutch.
Thus when you had to stop you did NOT need to pull the lever to take the drive off the front wheel as the automatic clutch would kick in, just pull the brakes on and stop
then twist the twist grip and away you go again.
'Cazenave's Version was FAR SUPERIOR in every way along with BUILD QUALITY And Had MORE Power. Plus 220 MPG !!!!!
(Why cant we make things like this anymore, think about it 64 years ago 220 MPG, so why don't we have fuelled vehicles doing 500 MPG 64+ years later?
The answer is "The Oil Cartel" who govern manufacturers with ££££££ NOT To)
I worked on a project called the MCC Project (Micro Compact Car) back on 1994 for Swatch and Damiler Chrysler/Benz. In Hambach France (known as Smartville) the brief was to design and build a little city compact car that was shorter than a mini, good on fuel, interchangeable interior and exterior which could be changed in 1 hour (The Swatch Watch Version of a car) to which Swatch funded the project and approached Daimler Chrysler (Mercedes Benz) to do the engineering, this in 1998 became "The Smart Car". Now what I am getting at here is WHY was it not "Electric" to which I put together "A rolling "Tridion Cell" with an electric motor" only to be told IT HAD TO BE FUEL POWERED. Enough said, Guess what NOW You CAN BUY an Electric Smart Car, Only because Elon Musk has took on the Fuel Cartel and made Billions From Doing So, Now IF ONLY Swatch/Damiler Chrysler/Benz had listened to me then !
Sorry (just very frustrating for me still to this day, just wish people would see who I am and
listen to my thoughts and ideas of which I have still many to this day, ex Cambridge Graduate here) Right back to The Cazenave True Story:
'Cazenave' built a prototype in 1958 (This Actual Bike) and launched their version in 1959 to compete with "Solex"
As soon as they did this 'Solex' new they had a problem, so guess what they did?
Bought 'Cazenave' out and The END of 'Cazenave' and this design/moped in 1959/60.
The Founder Had Already Passed Away In 1958
(Cazenave was founded in 1901 by Louis Cazenave and operated from Belin, a small village in the Landes of Gascony near Bordeaux. Cazenave is a common family name in the southwest of France which means "maison neuve" (new house) in occitan." )
Hence why in 1959 'Solex' then became know as Velo Solex due to owning/now using the
Cazenave Velo Vap Design/Engine. With ALL of the Moped now having a central fugal clutch as of 1959. All thanks to my little Cazanave here, with a chassis number 1 stamped on the frame and verified.
Velosolex as of 2023 are still going today and produce electric versions which AGAIN have a flaw, their batteries which are poorly made and die very quickly, yes you can buy a new battery pack (upgraded version) BUT these cost more than a complete/new bike !

Sounds great, ! But if you take it " down" to 20/1 you are increasing the amount of oil in the petrol.

its better to have to much oil in the mix, (hence the smoke) at the moment as just running in the engine and do not want her to get to hot and seize being a 2 stroke so being cautious at the moment as spares are very hard to find being a one off but you can find the AG Vap Pistons/ Barrels and Rings which is what she was based upon.

    More History About Cazanave:
Louis M. Cazenave was born in 1883 in a family of workers. Being 14 years old he found his first job in a sawmill. Then he held several other jobs in Belin: he was a locksmith's helper, he attended and repaired steam engines. In 1901 Louis rented a small room in Belin to sell and repair bicycles. Soon, with his cousins' help, he set a bigger workshop. He hired 15 workers and started to assemble and sell bicycles. At first bicycle frames were enamelled in Bordeaux; in a few years Cazenave had his own enamelling workshop. His clients were mainly farmers coming to the fairs. Cazenave was also selling guns, sewing machines and cookers. He bought a house in Belin, where he lived, run a workshop and a store.
In 1905 Louis M. Cazenave married Fernande Herreyre. Three children were born to them. Two sons: Guy (born in 1906) and Frank (born in 1917) and one daughter, Gisele, who died in baby age. In 1906 the house got too small for workshop and family and Louis Cazenave decided to buy an old glassware, about 600 m2. This was his workshop's new location.
During WW1 Cazenave was making ammunition there. After war he turned back to building bicycles and got interested in motorised vehicles, too. The family business was growing. In 1919 Louis's sister joined him to work in the office, and in 1925 his son, Guy, at the age of 19 started to work in the company. After completing his education the younger son, Frank, followed his brother. In early 20's the first Cazenave motorcycle was built: "Cazenavette", patterned on Motobecane.
During WW2 Cazenave agreed to work for German occupant in order to keep factory running (Frank left to be an army pilot, though, and in 1942 he joined "Free France".) After war Cazenave was producing motorbikes, scooters, even small cars using Ydral, AMC, VAP and Peugeot engines. Louis M. Cazenave died in 1958. His sons who had no interest as such continued to run the motorcycle production with development work their father had started with the automatic clutch vap engine on the front wheel to compete against The Solex Company but sold that idea/development on to the Solex Company who bought Cazanave out (owned the company) and ceased trading under the Cazanave name in 1959.
In 1954. The company was hiring 700 workers at this time but not as big as Solex/Velosolex..

@@AdamMGrubb1979 Hello Adam, I have over 50 Oddballs/Mopeds in my collection dating back to 1925, including a Pepper Pot 1949 Velosolex, and 3 Velosolex Flash 6000, the shaft drive ones that the gearbox explodes generally around the 3000km mark. Design fault but actually quite an easy fix along with simple modification BEFORE they explode. Velosolex are still going with their electric version Solexity BUT again the batteries do not last long and cost or replacement is not far off what a New Solexity would cost, hence loads of them about now for sale Before the battery goes! All great fun though, My Monet Goyons are my favourite though, not as fragile, Regards John
