You don't see guys complimenting each other like this often. It warms my heart. ♥️
I have always respected Mike for his love and respect for the history of all the bands,,,he can comment on bands from all genres but not just metal genres or rock but all...he truly loves/respects the history of music..smart, knowledgeable guy
Wow seeing "Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy" in 2014...
He's now The Winery Dog's Mike Portnoy in 2014.
If you don't like Mike Portnoy's drumming, that's fine and your prerogative, but if you don't like this guy's passion for music, it defies logic. He absolutely loves all genres and brands of music and that is to be admired. I happen to love his drumming and passion.
HE HAS DONE MANY COVER BANDS WITH PAUL GILBERT LOOK UP YELLOW MATTER CUSTARD ON YOU TUBE
I recently saw Halestorm, and I couldn't keep my eyes off Arejay. It was amazing he is so talented.
The best singing drummer is Deen Castronovo ,he is not a just a drummer who happened to sing he is a power house singer with monstrous chops as a drummer as well.
You are 100% correct. Deen fabulous voice and a great drummer. Closest to Steve Perry ever.
Ivo Stan you are right sir
If Mike Portnoy says you're a great drummer, you're a fucking great drummer! Arejay is awesome!
Mikes description of Arejay at uproar was so true that was me simply blown away! So glad I got to see them upfront at Irvine uproar 🙏🤘
Got a sign I hang on all my Backstage's, it says "ALL Drummers must be accompanied by an adult!" and these two are demonstrating why the sign is necessary, LOVE BOTH THESE GUYS !!!!
Two of my favorite drummers sitting in the same room together? If only The Rev was still alive to make things even better. Man, that would be an interesting video.
This was a really cool segment. Drummers have always been an enigma to me until now lol
Best singing drummer - Brann Dailor
Agree completely mate.
"I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord". That and the small task of being the drummer for progressive giant. I love Mastodon but c'mon.
See also: Phoenix Arn-Horn (completely different genre though)
*****
I would say Mastodon, Devin Townsend and Opeth reinvented the whole progressive scene in the 21st century and calling them bland is uneducated, misinformed and frankly hilarious. PS. I changed my mind Deen Castronovo is the best singing drummer after watching couple of Journey live takes.
Bela B the Drummer of Die Ärzte ;)
I agree with Portnoy about the guitar community especially the shred community. Guitarists are always ragging on other guitarist which is bullshit. I always try to encourage younger or less experienced players and when I get a chance to play with someone better or different than me I hope I get the same courtesy and am able to pick their brain about shit. No one is ever the best, I have been playing for 20 years now many of those years spent practicing for hours and hours a day and I still have moments where I feel like I'm terrible because someone blows my mind with their playing. After practicing Neoclassical type stuff and instrumental rock for years I started trying to learn Donna Lee by Charlie Parker and I realized fucking hell all this phrasing is totally different and difficult to get down. My mind was then opened to another way to express yourself on the instrument. Country players also opened my mind to this whole other world of shred. Unfortunately guitarists are always standing with their arms crossed thinking "he didn't play that clean, those sweeps are sloppy, that guy sucks", as if we all just started playing with the ability to execute perfectly. I still play sloppy at times and I play constantly. It should be a brotherhood of people who love music and love the instrument. I love many instruments but guitar is the one I have dedicated myself to and it has become an extension of who I am, like an appendage. I am connected to anyone who feels the same, in fact I feel connected to anyone who loves art and music the way I do. I think there is an element of jealousy involved when someone successful in music and who is thought of as great plays sloppily which seasoned players can recognize more readily than greener players. The impulse is to say "I can play cleaner and better than them, I should be as well known as them, they suck". I understand the impulse but it should be avoided. One thing I always say to people who want to play especially if they feel like playing at a high level of skill is unobtainable is you don't have to be great at guitar to be a great musician. This is a fact that eludes many in the guitar community. Like em or not guys like Chris Cornell are great guitar players. I can play circles around Cornell but Cornell can take the instrument and write something utterly beautiful with it. I'd like to think I can as well but Cornell has wrote stuff that I find exceptional and can only hope that I can come close to doing the same but will almost always fall short. He 's an amazing musician, far better than I even though he doesn't possess the chops that I do. Even Kurt Cobain with a rudimentary ability on the instrument was able to write this amazing music and express himself as effectively as any virtuoso. My advice is always simple, if you want to learn to play you must first identify what you want to get out of it. If you want to be a songwriter the rules are different than if you want to be a virtuoso. Neither one is better than the other, your technical ability does not make you a better musician by default, it might make you a better player but not a better musician. Like I said you don't have to be a great guitar player to be a great musician, guitar is simply a tool to express yourself creatively. The guitar community sometimes puts too much emphasis on the mastering of the instrument which has its merits but ultimately its about music not an exercise in ability. The drum community seems to have more solidarity and camaraderie than the guitar community. I think the guitar snobbing started with EVH and all the terrible hair metal dudes in the 80's. They are a good example of great guitar players making shitty uninspired music. Most of the 80's glamers played much better than the guys who usurped them in the 90's. The 90's guys had the most important factor on their side, inspired creativity and awesome rock songwriting. I'm a big fan of 80's players who were in the underground alternative scene, the underground metal scenes, and of course the shredders who made instrumental records. The hair guys were fucking awful. They may have had talent but they used it in a formulaic rehash uninspired style of God awful rock and roll.
dafuq did i just read
did... DID YOU JUST DISS EDDIE VAN HALEN????
the typical "not able to played properly on Guitar since I'm so self centered pricks that claim myself to be musically superior than those shredder wankers" kind of rant post.
is the summary.
lame
Regarding Ringo...He is the most famous, and the most wealthy, but, he is the most underrated drummer of all time. The man was a solid time keeper, Go and watch a Beatles tribute band (best example the Fab Four) and watch the drummer play, you will then get it.
Mangini
I love how these guys pay tribute to the "old" greats!! Great vid. Thanks for loading!!
In regards to the subject of great drummers, who are also great singers. I would like to mention Gil Moore, from Triumph. I am not claiming he is the greatest of all time, but, I do think he is one of the best I have ever heard. This is just my honest and humble opinion. Please don't kill me for having one. TRIUMPH ROCKS !!! S. O. S.!!! ROCKERS UNITED TO SAVE THE WORLD !!!
Did anyone else keep looking at Mike's Dream Theater tattoo?
+SRNF yes....
Just like you don't tattoo someone else's name on your body you most definitely don't tattoo a band your in on your body why cause you never know and nothing last forever
@@Beefnhammer cccccccc
@@fredlivingston3766 I don't think Mike regrets getting a DT tattoo. It's one of the most important parts of his career and life.
Kelly Keagy from Night Ranger is a great singing drummer.
notice the Kill'Em All themed shoes that Portnoy is wearing :P
Its increidlbe the amount of knowledge that Portnoy has... i wish i could have a little chat with him sometime
Singing drummers, just cuz i love the band and cuz hes awesome. Jerry Gaskill !!!!
Strange that MP doesn't refer to Queen drummer and singer Roger Taylor. He mentioned him before in The making of Systematic Chaos.
Everytime I see Mike Portnoy... I repeat on my head with his voice "A LONG LOST FORTRESS" I don´t know why jajaja
ok I love this show
Levon helm (the band) is probably my favourite singing drummer..
It's not like drummers could turn/hide their instruments while playing hahaha!
Gil Moore from Triumph was also a great drummer that could also sing
Mike said he was born the day Sgt. Pepper was finished, and he was born in 1967 just like both Johns were and so was Steven Wilson, which explains the lyric in the first line to Porcupine Tree song Time Flies "I was born in 67 the year of Sgt. Pepper"
I don't have favorite singing drummer but i have 1 favorite growler drummer, and that's CHRIS REIFERT from AUTOPSY!
Great discussion and advice.
SO SHWEEEETTT...much love Tee with LIONS NAMED LEO.[the music worldwide}
....so fun..!!!
Arejay talks exactly like Breckin Meyer from Robot Chicken
ROGER TAYLOR!!!
Deen Castronovo
Just realized mike is wearing the kill 'em all shoes I've wanted for ages now 😐
OH GOD BLESS1 MY FAV DRUMMER WITH MY FAV FEMALE SINGER'S BAND EVER!!!
hell ya don henely and phil collins!
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻Mike, Arejay 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Another really good singing drummer not a lot of people have heard of is Fred Leblanc of Dash Rip Rock and Cowboy Mouth. :)
Portnoy is a God.
Jerry Gaskill anyone?
Portnoys Lennon impression lol 👌
This is really insightful.
Nicke Andersson. Best singing drummer
Missed the most important question for drummers. WHat's up with the wrestling singlets? Everyone else would wear the spandex pants or shorts but every drummer rocked the singlet.
Awesome!
Brann Dailor. Best new singing drummer.
Forgot the drummer for Grand Funk......."We're an American Band."
ALL I REMEMBER IS MARK DON AND MEL
0:55 lol
You know a drummer that gets no love? Hugh Grundy of the Zombies. Do any drummers ever mention him?
Great to see the passion :) DC
Hale kinda looks like pewdiepie. LOL
9:20 completely opposite of mangini haha
erm Im not sure, I think just because mangini is far technically superior doesnt mean it doesnt come from his heart or he doesnt groove. If that were the case the two dream theater albums would have ridiculous drum parts on all over it - even though theyre complicated parts theyre not so in your face (you can tell as many think the parts SOUND less technical than alot of Portnoys drumming)
IMO Its more of a case of Mangini playing it safe than being heartless. He hasnt written any song as of yet so i guess thats why people see it like that. JP also needs people other than Rudess to share musical ideas, get Myung and LaBrie to write songs again. Also, JP needs to go back to standard tuning, his guitar tone is just so muddled in djenty style riffs that imo, it is one of the worst things on Astonishing.
I used that carmine appice trick to build speed in my fingers.
So, I'm about 10 comments in and regarding the 'more that just a drummer' theme Dave Grohl hasn't been mentioned yet.
What the hell?
Dave Grohl wasn't particularly flashy with Nirvana, but he was a huge part of their sound. One could argue that when he moved on to Foo Fighters, he was way more successful altogether.
Fuse Gene Hogland and Ian Haugland please :)
Andy Sturmer is a musical god.Wrote melodies as good as Paul McCartney, clever clever lyricist, drummed while standing up as lead singer in a 4 part harmony band, imagine Queen with Freddie as lead singer/drummer. Drummers who are into skill google All is forgiven by Jellyfish.
Mike is cool
favorite singing drummer...Karen Carpenter
Zoltan Chaney check him out the ultimate in stick twirling
What about Don Brewer for singing drummers?
You should probably change the name of the video to The Winery Dog's Mike Portnoy. After all, he's not in Dream Theater anymore.
Nope, he's still the dream theater!
Mike Portnoy is the Dream Theater
Absolutely Mike. He puts so much thought and heart into his music and thats why these technical dime a dozen types get so old. If you cant write, and groove, you will never be a group musician but a soloist. A now getting old example is look at Mangini, super technical and trained but extremely lacking feel and heart into the music and its kinda boring to watch nothing but stick tricks and rudiment fills when the music is so neglected.
Same applies to Jordan Rudess, who feels the need to compete with JP in most of the songs post 6DOIT in shred wars(even in parts of Metropolis part 2). Just listen to Kevin Moore or even Derek Sherinian when they did the keys, such atmospheres that Jordan can do, but gets lost in doing shred wars and wanking solos. Competing should be left for live concerts where it IS epic, but in general listening it just makes the listener want the song to get over quickly.
Which is why i am of the controversial opinion that Metropolis part 2 is not that good a concept album, even if it is a great MUSIC album. A concept album should draw u in with every single minute with its story/concept with every single song flowing with the story, not make u forget that there is a concept in the 1st place with needless instrumentals. Dance of Eternity would be a fantastic instrumental on any other album, EXCEPT Metropolis part 2, where u feel that the story has suddenly come to a grinding halt before it is even over. Fatal Tragedy was also guilty of this post the 3:50 mark. Like, they suddenly forget that there is a story they r telling and want to play as much as they can without tiring out.
What does a drummer get on his IQ test?
"Drool"
How was Roger Taylor not the first singing drummer mentioned?
Mike, What about Rare Earth?
Singing drummer...... Deen Castronovo
Serious troll baiting with the video title, not cool.
How do you know a drummer knocks on the door? The knocks get slower.
Kick - tom - hat, all you need. Tell that to Terry Bozzio....
I'm not going to tell him :)
9:30 is the big difference between mangini and portnoy
pretty sure his whole leg is NOT BEATLES. Look closely and you see a red M for metallica on there... i cant believe he would lie to us
+Joseph Pretorius oh on this is devastating....
There's big Pink Floyd deal there too. I'm not going to sweat it
Has Halestorm become metal now?
about as much as dream theater is
Did mike have a m for Metallica tattooed on his leg?
Mike portnoy is not with DT anymore. Someone tell them that.
Neil Peart
fuse... You do know that Mike left Dream Theater way back 2010, don't you?
As a guitar player that is a pizzaman....:-(
flying colors new album pisses on dts last effort, they miss portnoys imput end of
I shall take your word for it and listen to flying colors due to your marillion profile image :)
the drums do not make the drummer....the drummer makes the drums... yep.!
Roger Taylor? Anyone? Just me?
Lol yo arejay kinda looks like pewdiepie
We're not ALL that uptight. . .
Man, Mike isn't looking to hot in this video. I hope everything is well with his health. Maybe he just needs a break with the 20 other bands he is in lol.
He sounds happy but he definitely looks like he needs a nap! Hope all is well.
karen carpenter the best singing drummer
No drummer before Ringo did those kinds of things? i wont get into any names because i dont want to start a way but jesus..you got to be kidding me..there was an insane amount of drummers who were way better than Ringo and did the things he did and much more long before him
Pfft.. best singing drummer = Mike Browning or Proscriptor McGovern.
The Halestorm guy doesnt know music
Such a shame you agreed with this. So false
