I am approaching 4yrs of owning the R and I have yet to purchase an RF lens. All of my adapted EF lens work very well and see no need to upgrade....yet. 😁 Thanks for the review.
It's on Black Friday for about 850-999 bucks, the RF. So pretty much the only reason u don't want to recommend it is because it's a newer lens and still expensive. But the RF is better in focusing AND magnification which is the key points to a macro lens.
Is there no lens reviewer that is interested in macro rather than portrait or family snapshots? I agree on not upgrading but the reports of focus shift as you stop down at 1.4:1 scared me off not to mention the refusal of Canon to address it. I will continue to use my old fashion EF Canon 100 macro and my fully manual 2:1 Laowa when I want to go closer or sharper. Maybe someday Canon will make a macro lens aimed at macro photographers but this is not it. Autofocus paired with the automatic focus bracketing feature of recent Canon bodies is a great tool. I only wish we had a great lens.
Glad you said this as I am in the same position as you. I currently only use the the manual 2:1 Laowa 100mm but would like to use automatic focus bracketing feature of the R6 so have been looking at the EF version because of the focus shift issue which several reviewers don't seem to mention.
Matt.... Thanks for the vid. I've been using the Tamron 35mm 1.8 (EF) for ring shots at weddings. Yes, I know that it's not a "macro" lens but man it has a silly close focusing distance. My question is, what is the benefits of moving to an RF 100 vs an older wider "non-macro". I need to see the visual. Otherwise, I'm not sure that it's worth the money. It's just for rings!
Thanks Sean. The 35mm is an amazing lens for sure and probably all you need for taking the ring shots. Otherwise I say pick up a used 100mm EF version and you would be rocking. And again, you can snap some awesome portraits with it as well if needed. Thanks for chiming in and hope your new year is off to a great start! Cheers
I ordered and paid for this this lens (Canon RF 100mm Macro Lens) almost a year ago now and understand that I had to wait 6-months to get this lens but I still don't have the "Tripod Mount Ring and Adapter" yet and Canon has refused to comment to B&H for an update. I believe that to be unacceptable customer service and therefore can't recommend "Canon equipment" to anyone.
Great honest video. Nobody is ever going to use the SA control, they should of dumped that gimmick and made the lens more affordable.

Thanks Jay! Our pleasure.
yes, don't give into the hype, stop listening to the influencers here on youtoob...
I’m planning to make the upgrade from EF 100mm macro to the RF version, so this video couldn’t have been posted at a better time for me lol
Glad our timing worked out for you!

Great video and I agree the upgrade is probably not worth it for the same reasons you shared.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙏

Sounds like you didn’t use the focus delimiter.
The RF is back focusing/focus shifting, I am returning mine to Canon.
Going to agree that it really isn't the best upgrade. Great lens, but not worth it in my opinion as well.
How about the backfocus issue on the RF?
We experienced no backfocus issues
Boring advertising halfway through spoilt the review
Haha. We just saw this. Thanks for the morning laugh with our coffee.
