    In regards to history - I won't even get in to the discussion of whether or not people wore boiled leather armor like this.
    One thing you may want to consider with the shoulder straps, however, is using toggle enclosures. The Japanese did this with their samurai armor. Essentially there is a bar toggle at the chest, and then a long loop from the back which hooks over it. Also, cannot recommend flat lace enough; so much more comfortable to have lacing which sits almost flush to the interior of the armor!
    Really nice armor, though. I also love that you're allowing end users to share the templates freely and build and sell these armors on their own. Super cool of you!

    Hi nice leather work !
    Reviewing Leather Smiting as a Third Career option.
    Reviewing the process looks like many holes are a problem on curved pieces.
    So it looks like Leather can behave as Sheetmetal and patterned holes on multiple pieces can be precision aligned to good tolerances.
    Provided they were 3D Modeled in CAD Sheetmetal and then unfolded. Onshape is Free if your interested.
    Curves is something of the next step in my Drafting Career.
    Calc II deals with some length Formulas of curved lines, areas and 3D shapes.
    Looking at Armor on Skyrim began 2015 for home build ideas.
    I don't have long I have to get back to math for Astro Major.
    I will say that calc II deals with curved features. And sheetmetal features in 3D CAD Programs are real close and would do for Leathers.

    I am making a wasteland Armor that the shoulder are done, but problem is, it won't hold, even if i try a rope on it, it feels uncomfortable, the center piece is a baby doll head with a crack top real skull of a goat with the horns still attach to it, as my shoulder piece, just to make the point look edge. it pass my head and is aline well on the back of my ears but 9inches away from my head. this kept falling out til i saw this video and i see whats missing... a Back piece. I have no idea how to make it til this video show me. I love this video and it now more comfortable and steady. HUGE thanks

    One of the future projects for me is to do a 13th century Archer. I want to make my own archers hood. Any tips or hints you have for me (or perhaps an idea for a future video *hint*hint*)? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks for these amazing videos.

    The 550 cord is a nice option. Would you think riveting everything in place would be better. Especially since I'll be making these custom fit for my peeps in the Saber Legion for dueling protection. Our blades are polycarbonate, and we buy our LED sabers from various manufacturers.

    I'm super glad you put up this tutorial since I'm working on making cosplay armour for my partner (would love for this to become a little series for all your templates). Would the rivets work for foam as well? I worry that the stress is too much on the foam if we do some show fights...

    • @backtoearthcreations
      @backtoearthcreations  6 лет назад

      Hey, Gwen! I don't recommend rivets on foam; they tear and bite through it and cause way more stress than necessary!

      Another question: I know you have two videos on armour. Is one male and the other more female? Also do you sell either example of those as I really want to make these. I did make elven armour some years ago out of much softer leather and depending on your answers I may go the whole hog and buy a new set of tools.
      I am a lot older now and am sadly disabled so this would give me something I could do rather than just sit watching videos all day.
      Thank you and kind regards
      Rach

    This is silly armour!
    That said, you make a really good video and the finish of your leather work looks good. I understand that this is larp armour, I build some myself and get that someone who only wears it a couple of hours a month wants light easy armour that looks good. Completely ignoring any sort of history, the armour should be designed so that any blow coming down on the shoulder is guided away from the neck and down the arm. All of your plates should be stacked so there is no lip for a weapon to catch on. (not an issue for most larp) I am a little concerned with the limited shoulder motion, again not really too much of a problem for costume and larp.
    Overall I think that it is a good piece of costume armour. Also best reason to wear a gorgent over maile is to stop your beard getting caught. New Subscriber from Brisbane Australia - now to see what other cool videos you have.

    Hi
    I bought your template from Etsy and it's a bit different than what you're showing here. Mainly there are fewer dots/holes on the front/back gorget, and no lined hole either.
    Is there a specific location I should do those or is that irrelevant?
    Thank you

      Hey! Thank you for contacting me! It sounds like etsy has the older pdf listed: if you send me a message on etsy I'll send you the updated file! The hole placement isn't specific, they can be relocated to suit your fit, but the new file has more accurate sizing

    Could I draw this template out on sheet steel and make metal upper armor, or do the individual pieces of armor need to flex to articulate

    • @backtoearthcreations
      @backtoearthcreations  6 лет назад +2

      oooo, that would be really awesome! I would recommend attaching with strips of leather between the metal plates instead of riveting the plates directly together to allow for more mobility

    • @jameswitte5167

      A leather or nylon washer between the plates would be suggested ...

    OLD LEATHER SMITH here, if I may, if you would punch 3 holes in a triangle shape you would not require a knot, lace as you have been doing but bring the 2 strings up the 3rd hole and down though the middle of the first 2 holes it's now tied off, also using 1)4 inch lace does a better job and lies flatter, GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

    • @davidbeppler3032
      @davidbeppler3032 5 лет назад

      My first thought is gloves would be hard, I suggest you buy a pair of leather work gloves and copy the seams they use. Secondly I would use two thickness leathers if you can, thicker on top thinner on bottom. I am curious how they turned out?

    Where do I start if I want to learn how to be a leatherworker (not boots and belts but armor and cowls and stuff like that) are there schools or is it something that is just trial and error please help

    • @SlyBlu7
      @SlyBlu7 6 лет назад +1

      You can occasionally find classes through various art centers or art schools, depending on where you live. Often, however, it is self-taught. There are books out there, and tutorials like this one, which can help a bit with the "trial and error" portion of the process. Learning to make boots and belts isn't a bad thing, though; you'll probably need those methods as an armorer, and it's yet another thing that you'd be able to sell to customers. Plus, lots of belt, bag, and saddle makers can teach you how to add decorative tooling to your work.
      I very strongly suggest starting with foam, as she did. If you can cut and fit foam armor, you can use it as a template later. Way better to finish a foam piece and find out that your plans didn't work, than to build an entire piece out of expensive leather and then realize that it doesn't fit, or that you can't raise your arms or whatever.

      leather can be expensive, but buying scrap leather would be cheaper. You'd have to frankenstein the pieces together though, if they're not big enough
