1994 Scar: Sincere, cold, and brutal before throwing Mufasa to the stampede.
2019 Scar: Tries too hard to sound menacing, but really sounds like he's reading out of a textbook with short pauses before slapping Mufasa.

1994 with a smirk and a creepy whispering voice: "Long live the king."
2019 with a scowl and an angry shouting voice: "Long...live...THE KING!"
For 2019, we can't see expressions very well, but remembering 1994 and hearing the tones of voices from 2019, we should at least get an idea on what their emotions are.

@DuckyTouché True, and as of 1994, he's more creepy than stupid, and I love his creepiness, it's funny!

    • @nascarfanatic2425

The problem is that if this was intended for kids to watch as the movie's defenders keep saying, then this is the first time they're introduced to the Lion King, and it's hard to pick up the emotions. Thus, the scene fails. If this is intended for the 1994 audience to see, (like Disney has gone on record saying) then this scene fails because we know how much better and expressive the original version was.

They completely failed capturing Musfasa's courage and vulnerability as well as Scar's sadism and malice in the 2019 version. When Mufasa begged Scar for help, calling him "brother" emanates so much trust and desperation. And the sudden realization on his face when Scar leans forward, stares him straight in the eyes, and whispers, "Long...live..the...king" just makes your blood turn to ice. The fact that Scar was actually relishing this moment of usurping his brother and seeing the shock on Mufasa's face makes this betrayal scene far more compelling and terrifying. He was taking his time toying with his older brother's despair and vulnerability. Also, can we talk about Jeremy Iron's voice? So utterly dark and otherworldly. For a moment, you just see straight into Scar's sick and twisted psychology & you feel Mufasa's sudden awareness along with his agony and terror. I was six years old when I saw the original and it pretty much traumatized me. I'm in my 30's now and it still gives me chills. The 2019 live version should at least gotten that part right. The delivery just sounds too hurried and way too casual. The way Scar killed off Mufasa is almost like how one would swat away a pesky moth. The whole adaptation lacked passion...and soul.

You can't really compare an animated cartoon version to a 3D realistic animation.

    • @floranse5205
      @floranse5205 4 года назад +19

@@justinkaz In this context you can, since its one story thats being told by both media. And for the record the 3D "realistic" version was basically a copy paste with uncanniness thrown in with it in the most important scenes. 3D realism can achieve great things, and it can manage to pull off things 2D cannot, just as much the other way round. But here even the voice acting is dry compared to the original, which does not involve what media was used to carry out the visuals. Overall, the director or whoever was in charge of this remake wanted to recreate a human emotion filled piece with an overly limited "realism" setting. It is impossible to produce emotion on these faces, they definitely could've gone more towards what Narnia did with their lion where they were realistic enough but still kept unreal anatomy in the faces to make them be able to show emotions. Its a huge fault with this remake since all it depended on was the emotions of the characters and their humanity, yet they failed at the most crucial pillars which uphold the visual storytelling of it.

Old version vs. New version death
    Old
    ----------------------
Simba: Horrified at seeing his own father plummet to his death, you can hear the pure terror in his scream.
Mufasa: Falling to his demise, stared into his brother's eyes one last time, realizing he was being betrayed by his own blood.
Scar: Cruel and satisfied as he sarcastically "hails" Mufasa as king. He has waited for this moment for years. You hear the hatred and contempt in every word
    New
    -----‐-------------------
Simba: Sounds like a child who stubbed his toe
Mufasa: Slow, exaggerated fall which adds nothing and looks odd in the animation style, stone face
Scar: Sounds like the socially awkward kid reading off a script in the play his mom forced him to audition for

    1994:
. Mufasa barely hanging on to the cliff side, shouting in desperation for his brother to help him
. Scar leaning in close with sadistic glee, as he said “long live the king!” with an evil smile
. Mufasa’s shock and utterly look of betrayal on his face moments before he was tossed off the cliff
    2019:
. Mufasa saying “help me” with both paws on the cliff, looking more like a cat who needs “help” with opening a can of tuna than someone who’s inches away from death
. Scar looks more like he’s struggling to remember the speech he rehearsed before giving up and just bitch-slaps Mufasa
. Mufasa doesn’t even get a final moment of closure

The voice acting in the remake is horrendous. There is no emotion, and the stiff facial features don't help. The stampede seems so much slower and smaller in the remake too which makes it much less of a threat. The shots are also further out, meaning there's more space around Simba as he's running so there's less of a "omg he's trapped" feeling.
Overall, the original is so much better.

@AshFirez I do feel bad for the animators. The director had a realistic style in mind and they did a great job making that work. But...it sucks out the soul of the story and really doesn't work. (I would hesitate to call it beautiful too, as there's no real style and the colours are so dull - but that's my opinion)
The voice acting does defiantly affect the story, imo. How are we supposed to care for these characters and what happens if they don't seem to care either? If their voices sound so flat and their faces are so blank, why should the audience work doubly hard to put in the emotion and then care about said emotion? It just makes the movie flop hard.

That's the problem: the "live-action" version tried to look as real as possible. As such, it kills all of the advantages of animation. Animation is better when it comes to emphasis, exaggeration, and emotions. You can see all the tension and true terror in the animated version, because of how it was expressed. In the "live-action" version, the animals just go through the motions.

I absolutely despise the remake. Let me explain, I grew up with the original Lion King, when I was born, the movie was barely 10 years old, I watched hundreds of times as a kid, and I naturally had large expectations for the remake, and it didn’t meet any of them, it was emotionally dull, and a half baked retread of a movie I adored.
In other words, it’s like if your favorite restaurant made a brand new pork sandwich, and you love it from the very first bite, the juices mixed with the condiments and the fresh ingredients make it a wonderful experience, but then they remove it from the menu, then they rerelease it a few years later with a few new changes, like maybe the pork was replaced with chicken or something, but now, everything that was great about the original is gone, it’s a bitter and flat sandwich compared to the flavors of the previous.
I use this sandwich analogy to describe half-assed remakes nowadays. And hopefully it actually makes sense

The worst part: no matter how many times you watch this, even though you knew what was going to happen, you still hold on to that small amount of hope that, somehow, someway, Mufasa gets out of this alive, that what you’ve seen a thousand times over, is not gonna happen. But every time, you get disappointed, as no matter what, you have to face the fact that, unfortunately, Mufasa is gonna still be betrayed by Scar, and Mufasa was still gonna die.

One thing about the original that will never be met at all, is the music. And not just the music. But the voice acting. Simba sounds legitimately scared and worried when he yells out for his dad at 2:44 and it breaks my heart everytime. One other thing is how Simba’s yell transitions the music into a more heavy, intimidating and scary tune. That perfectly captures the feeling. From Simba’s POV he thinks that his dad is bascially going to die. After he just saved his life. In one of the worst ways possible too. Being absolutely trampled by hundreds and hundreds of wildebeests. And we live Mufasa. From the scenes we’ve seen of him from before, he’s such a charming, nice, playful dad. One who definitely doesn’t deserve to die like that. So it’s just as impactful for Simba as it is for us.

Honestly, I have some respect for the man who voice acted Scar in the 2019 remake.
He tried to be unique and different from Jeremy Irons, but unfortunately, his voice just didn’t suit Scar.

But Jeremy Irons will always be our Scar@

Here's a new voice actor that would totally fit Mufasa as a successor Jeremy Jordan

The original has emotional while the remake does not have emotional at all!
