Years back I asked my local mechanic if I could get the Mitsubishi engine they were throwing out because of a cambelt failure for free? They agreed and I rebuilt it myself in my bedroom, and it also had signs of abuse. However, it worked flawlessly for years after with normal driving, though it had dinged pistons and not perfectly straight valve stems.

@13:39: after giving up on cracking the cam bearing bolt loose with hammers and gorilla bars proceeds to butcher the bolt head into a giant slot-head screw with an angle grinder, finally removing it with giant screwdriver: "There is no problem, it can still be used, you just need a special tool...😄😆😂

I love the fact, that SP's tech is such a perfectionist, he even laughs over the excessive use of silicone. I can tell you first hand, having to rebuild other peoples work. I have found a lot of excess silicone in a lot of places it should have NEVER been. I've found it in Radiators, Thermostats, coolant bypass hoses *(especially in throttle body cooling/warm up loops), in the water pump. And onto the worst places I've found it. IN bearings, the oil sump screen (one vehicle had low oil pressure, we were sure it was a sludge filled engine until they said it was rebuilt 10k miles previously), in oil passageways, and the most interesting find, Blocking over 50% of a drain back hole in a SBC head.

German engineering and workmanship has got to be the best in the world! (However, nothing wrong with the Japanese, either). I have worked on many a car in my lifetime, from VW to Rolls-Royce to Porsche and Maserati, so there are some grounds for making that claim. The cleanlines of your shop and range of tools available are just fantastic. Not many places in the world can boast of equal. Cheers from a finnish born D.Eng. residing in Indonesia.

The rear main seal depth is the same thing on the Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine, the original olive green coloured one was 13 mm in thickness but the new black one that GM supplies by default now is 10mm in thickness meaning be careful installing it into the rear seal plate because if you push it in too far, it will leak oil !

My first attempt at rebuilding my project car's EJ20x I put a headgasket on backwards so one galley was pouring out oil when I test cranked it. I redid the job (with a new gasket), and even after that idiotic mistake, certainly did a better job than this! Enjoying all your great content.

Didn't know why he didn't try using a impact drive socket on the stubborn cam bearing bolt, if the nut head is damaged or rounded cut a slot in it & use a flat head socket & impact drive. Plenty of tools on the market to extract stubborn bolts even if the nut head is snapped off. My old man used to say there is no bolt or nut that can not be removed some how or another as long you take your time & persevere.

Interesting to see one or two motors you strip have rust in the cooling system areas etc. Does this mean that ordinary water has been used and not special cooling fluids with anti corrosive properties. Some years of working on high revving Japanese liquid cooled engines and I never used just water.
