  • College students and the writers of that Op-ed in the New York Times titled "What Is Happening on College Campuses Is Not Free Speech," Jillian Lederman, Talia Dror and Gabriel Diamond join Nicolle Wallace for a conversation on the antisemitism that they and their peers have experienced on campus, and what must be done to protect Jewish students from hate speech and bigoted rhetoric across the country in the wake of the October 7 Hamas attack.

This reminds me of what happened when I was in college in 1974. I was on an ROTC scholarship and was required to wear an Air Force uniform once a week. The Vietnam war was still raging at that point in time. People I had never met before would come walking up to me and insult me, as if they were blaming me for the war.
Today's issues with Israel, Hamas, the Jewish community, the US & Great Britain, are all important, and people are doing the same thing - blaming every individual for what's being done that's out of their personal control.
But, as I say when a hate statement is leveled against a group, I ask which person, specifically, they want to unalive, how they know them personally, and are they projecting their dislike of what's happening on an individual who, through no fault of their own, is by birth, or inherited (raised as) religious beliefs, a member of that group.
Thank you for highlighting the severity of this issue and showing how widespread it is, Nicolle.

I cannot believe these poor kids have to deal with this at college. Professors engaged in these hate activities need to be punished, suspend tenure, do whatever you have to do, but it is not OK for this behavior. My God, this is America! Everyone can have their opinion but you CANNOT foist your hate on other people, make them feel unsafe, make them afraid to go to the cafeteria for lunch.

I have always supported a free and independent Palestine . However, the fact that Hamas is not being condemned for the slaughter of 1400 innocent civilians in their homes, and is actually being lauded for it by American students and Professors, is sickening.

I don’t think anyone disputes the complexity of the issue. There is tons of conflation of groups and issues.
The media keeps referring to Israeli’s as “jews” when NOT ALL of them are Jewish or even practice any religion. In fact, most Israelis are agnostic. But it sells better to call them all Jewish because it evokes memories of the holocaust, which is manipulative.
And most AMERICANS don’t even understand the complexity of the issue or what happened in 1948, or PRE 1948.
Lots of opinions formed out of emotion rather than facts.
I’ve had countless interactions over the Palestinian people being allowed to be free, with responses like “well that’s what they voted for.”
WRONG. The Hamas they voted for 16 years ago is NOT the same Hamas today.
And people don’t seem to understand that Israel effectively controls the existence of the Palestinians in both Gaza and the West Bank. They’re like wardens of an open air prison. You can’t deny it. That’s basically the conditions they exist under.
Israel saw the attack as license to wipe these people off the face of the earth, even though they all DO NOT support Hamas.
And any ask for Israel to exercise some restraint is met with accusations of being antisemitic if you don’t UNEQUIVOCALLY support turning Gaza into a parking lot, no matter how many innocents die.
The president between a rock and a hard place. I have no doubt Biden is a thoughtful man who doesn’t want people to die.
But US policy has him hamstrung. If he pushes back on Israel, then he’s “antisemitic.” If he doesn’t unequivocally support the Palestinians to many americans, then he’s a butcher! But its not OUR WAR. We only have so much say. And if he stops “aid” to Israel, then he’d be accused of helping Hamas.
This issue is insanely complex and anyone who oversimplifies it, is stupid.
This news video does exactly what we need to stop doing….this one sided “Poor Israelis” crying.
BUT AGAIN, if they don’t then MSNBC will be accused of being “antisemitic.” Which is absurd.

@@jcc9549 you started out strong… then right after saying “ lots of opinions formed out of emotion rather than fact” you fall into the same emotional arguments and went downhill from there. Look at your first couple of paragraphs and then look at the rest and ask yourself if you were an unbiassed observer reading beyond the first few paragraphs are you not falling for the same trap?
Edited to add: You have numerous emotional opinions interspersed with rational points. Unfortunately, the emotional opinions detract from rational points. This is complex, and the responses in the handling the situation by individuals in important positions like President Biden is very complicated. I had to reread your common multiple times to see the nuance that I believe you were trying to highlight. I’ll be fair and say that when I initially read your comment, I was really impressed and then things got emotional and I was ready to write you off. I was just another emotional commentor, but I went back and reread it. I’m guessing you’re struggling with much of the same things I am, which is the complexity and the new ones and being incredibly frustrated with emotional people who have taken a hard position on either side. It’s important we check our own bias, but thank you for not staying silent and leaving in to the hardliner on either side. I will say though it’s important that the news covers the antisemitism in the threats being made on college campuses, just like it’s important for the news to cover the Islamophobia and attacks on Palestinian Americans. When covering hate it is not appropriate to include both sides, because it only platforms that hatred, the same reason they didn’t invite the guy who murdered in six-year-old Palestinian American boy.

Peoples emotions are overriding their logic.
There are individuals and organizations using social media, and other means to twist information and feed a narrative that all Jews are responsible for the actions of Israel. The same influences have twisted the information to justify the horrendous attacks by Hamas as being legitimate resistance. Mediaeval style barbaric atrocities are not resistance. Those influences have continued on to pin the blame of Israel, and the existence of Israel, on all Jews. This has led to people who may not even have any connection to the Middle East or Palestinians to see what is happening on the news or social media, and see the horrors of war, that previous generations have been shielded from, which triggers an emotional response. They have been primed to believe that Jews are responsible for Israel’s actions, and that Israel is to blame for Hamas breaking the ceasefire and engaging in horrific atrocities. So when their emotions take over the lash out at who they see is too blame.
Humans don’t like to feel out of control and they need to find something or someone to blame. The conflict is messy and there is no clear good guy and bad guy, but the emotional part of the human brain struggles with nuance and needs absolutes. So when presented with an easy scapegoat, the human brain jumped to that.

I love Ms Wallace. She is smart, thoughtful, sensitive and more. But I have been troubled with a couple of other guests who have been on closing segments recently discussing the terrible events in the Middle East and the repercussions beyond, including here in the USA.
Somehow in these closing segments everything seems to be reduced to antisemitism. The Israeli special envoy certainly seemed to be saying that any concern and/or sympathy for the well-being of the people of Gaza is unacceptable ... equating it with antisemitism. She made my blood boil.
We can care about the well-being of all people in the region. Expressing concerns about the Palestinians is not antisemitism, but somehow that is the strong impression being fueled by these closing segments. I know Ms Wallace is better than that.
Joy Reid has done an excellent job of covering this with her guests. Another favorite of mine, Ari Melber, doesn't seem to have addressed this. Antisemitism is wrong. Islamophobia is wrong. War and violence is wrong. Genocide is wrong. There are not two camps or teams at play here.

Maybe for some people that's what they mean when they use the slogan. The problem is it is the official viewpoint of Hamas, who DO mean the genocide of all Jews. It's in their governing document. So until they no longer exist, people are NOT going to believe the phrase is a call for peaceful democracy between Jewish and Palestinian people.
Edit: I also don't think that's the meaning used by people who tear down flyers of the hostages or who threaten Jewish students. They DO mean it in a genocidal way. So unless the activities of the people using the phrase are peaceful, people are free to assume they mean harm. Those who insist it is a peaceful slogan will have to work in harmony with Jewish students to protect them and openly oppose those who display hatred to them. Until then, they will be included among those who mean harm. It's the reality we live in, and they can only change it by their own actions.

You need to list exactly what Israel did before October 7th and exactly what Hamas did on October 7th and thereafter. Then, you need to argue why the October 7th response of Hamas was justified and the response of the Netanyahu government is not. You cannot just assert that the Israeli government is a terrorist organization just because you feel that it is and expect everyone to agree with you. In addition, it is telling that you make no distinction between the government and the people of Israel (you simply refer to "Israel"), while you presumably expect the government of Israel to make a distinction between Hamas and the people of Gaza. If you want the Netanyahu government to be labeled a terrorist organization, you have to prove that it is and that what it did before October 7th is a more egregious crime than what Hamas did on October 7th, thus removing the justification that Netanyahu uses for asserting his current policy of death and destruction.
You do none of that. You leave your readers just as much in the dark as they were before because you start with your conclusion as a given instead of proving it.

It is a not about Palestinians having the same freedoms, it is part of a larger speech about erasing Israel.
According to the recent census in Israel, 24% of is Israeli citizens identify as Arab and or Palestinian. These are for citizens living in Israel. Gaza was occupied by Egypt for decades, then occupied by Israel for decades. But Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005. So it has not been under occupation for 18 years, 17 of which Hamas has been in control of Gaza. There is only one area that is under Israeli occupation, and that is the West Bank. There is a ton of criticism that is well-deserved towards Israel and their actions in the West Bank, but conflating, Gaza and West Bank, completely undermines your credibility as conflating the two spreads misinformation. It is clear the Palestinians can live freely in Israel, as Israeli citizens who have full status and live and work like the other 76% of Israelis. The situation in Gaza since 2006 is the responsibility of Hamas, saying otherwise, would be like Americans blaming Britain for what happened with Trump as president. And yet again, the West Bank is a whole other mess where Israel is absolutely deserving of criticism for the Israeli settlers in the West Bank, and undermining the Palestinian authority.

    • @jessikabat6200
      @jessikabat6200 10 месяцев назад

The phrase is decades old and is calling for liberation for an oppressed people. It’s been used for decades, while Hamas is younger than I am at 30 years old. That’s disingenuous, just like the ppl who say “black lives matter” is somehow racism because they are drawing attention to ongoing injustice. You do know Netenyahu has been on record for years that bolstering and financially supporting Hamas as a strategic way to divide the Palestinian people in Gaza from the PLO in the West Bank, ultimately to thwart the creation of a Palestinian state? He said it in 2019, and many, many other former Israeli leaders have also been on the record about thinking they could control Hamas, and contain them as controlled opposition. One leadership official said years ago in an article “to my great regret, Hamas is a creature of Israel”. This is known internally in Israel. US officials know it. So how can they know this but continue to justify killing innocent civilians in Gaza as the leaders of Hamas are literally doing sit down interviews with the BBC in Qatar? Because they want their state, Israel, to be all of the territory, free of the people indigenous to the land, and they are not making any pretense about that if you look at what they are saying and doing as we speak. It’s disgusting. No innocent civilians should be punished for the actions of tyrants, that’s literally the justification used by Hamas! But it’s okay to bomb 10,000 innocent people in Gaza for being Palestinians, it’s an acceptable but tragic cost of the war? Wars happen between nations and their militaries. Not occupied people and their occupiers??? Totally incoherent and overlooking the same crimes rightly condemned when it was Putin bombing hospitals and trying to justify it by screaming human shields! That’s a war crime, whether you’re an ally or not. Total bs and double standards for certain people. It puts on full display the hypocrisy and the total disregard of the values we proclaim to have, as long as it’s politically convenient and in our own interests. Otherwise it’s just bs, and that undermines the credibility of the whole democracies and rules of war and international law, because we have always vetoed the UN Security Council resolutions for Israel’s war crimes. It’s so frustrating to be an American with even a little bit of an understanding of what is happening, and what it looks like to the rest of the world when we act so sanctimonious and righteous about Russia, but fund Israel as it bombs way more schools, hospitals, and houses than Putin did, and the Palestinians don’t even have a military to fight with. It’s just crappy and totally reveals the inability to learn any lessons from the unnecessary, illegal, and oftentimes disastrous elective wars and bad, hawkish and corrupt AF foreign policy that we’ve been engaged in for decades now.

For example, if I say the phrase "Dia de los muertos" in Mexico, do I get twenty different interpretations of what it means to people and what happens on that day if I talk to twenty different Mexicans of Hispanic descent, just because I, as a White American may never have heard the Spanish phrase before I saw the movie _Coco_ ? Or does that phrase mean pretty much the same thing to everybody of Hispanic background in Mexico?
"From the river to the sea," cannot be interpreted as referring to going down the Hudson River to New York Bay by anyone in the Middle East. Do college kids study, work part-time for work experience when they are done with school and party on weekends anymore? All it seems they do is protest and/or whine all of the time. This younger generation is pathetic in so many ways. Life gets easier when you realize that not everyone is going to like you and you are not here to please everyone.

You do realise students have typically been at the forefront of protesting and activism, particularly against wars and the persecution of minorities, around the world and throughout the twentieth and twenty first centuries? I'm not commenting on the tactics or specifics of any student groups here but to suggest that students today seem to have too much time to protest is just uninformed and ahistorical.

@@Mr.White10-65 Is it though? Or is it just your view based on a skewed media diet or a general increase in coverage in our modern media saturated world? Do they have more reason for activism perhaps given the ills facing the world now and especially in the future? If you can point us to some reliable studies that show an increase in student activism I'd be interested to read an analysis of the causes behind it?
And yes, I was already aware that in the USA you use a "z" in spelling numerous words, including "realize" and I'm also aware that in the UK we more commonly use an "s" in "realise". Remarkably you were still able to discern the meaning despite our national differences in spelling but I take it you are implying that I should have been careful to conform to US customs when replying to you? How impolite of me to use the spelling commonly used where I live? It's positively outrageous. I can see it is an act so egregious that someone online should definitely whine about it as it is much more serious than killing innocent people, taking hostages, forcing people from their homes!

I simpathize with these students. Unfortunately, this also is part of their education they need to learn about. While watching a pro-Palestinian rally at Stanford, I advised an Israeli student to temporarily adopt a Hispanic identity for his own sake. I learned later that seven Israeli military advisors adopted a Mexican identity, even wearing sombreros, while helping Singapore. It's never too early to learn to survive.
