I was always impressed by how they managed to reinvent what FF combat was in almost every game. I think that's one of the things that made the franchise so compelling back in the PS1/PS2 era and is still unmatched today.
The combat system now is now looked at as being too experimental and having no foundation or identity, like the series itself has become. It had hallmarks and expanded on what it did with the same combat system, but never dropped it in service of doing something different. Some weren't so bad, others weren't great and disappeared alongside ones that were good and also never reappeared. The combat systems now are in service of the graphics more than anything or the trends on the market, something the company never did in it's golden era. It set trends for JRPGs, it didn't take from anything.

0:14 What do you mean with "perhaps... Nobuo Uematsu"?! To me, he is even MORE relevant of FF than Nomura (and look, I love his designs and KH2, but come on!). Though I get it, Uematsu is barely present with new titles in the series aside from a single song here and there. Also, to me the best system in the series is the Junction system.
I grew up on ff games I love them all for their differences and flaws I just picked up the pixel remaster as I’ve completed ff7/8 and 9 and wanted to play the older ones Ito-san kitase are legends
I never really played the FF card games beyond that one mandatory tetra master game in 9. Why is triple triad/ queen’s blood beloved and tetra master hated?
@@jairekambui7738 what is queens blood? triple triad is really fun, and well designed. tetra master is an rng shitshow and most of the mechanics are not stated anywhere (except in guides by players). you can literally lose a game with a card that is supposed to win but just decided not to. if you havent played triple triad, you should check it out.
It doesn't get mentioned alongside the more promoted figures or foundations of Squaresoft, but Ito is well known for his role. He's just not put out there like the others because his work is "under the hood" sort of speak, but one has to ask who put the combat system together. His name comes up, so it's unavoidable talking about the games. I don't think he gets enough credit for being so good at making the lore of the world and combat systems work together. You can tell people don't look any deeper to why something is the way it is and not just a basic approach. VII is very simple compared and why it's system is liked, but I never think he went off the deep end as he always worked within context.

Hard agree, I don't have a single thing to add, so well worded
Love your videos man, lost of people overlook the combat and battle system of final fantasy
Hiroyuki Ito sounds like a cool guy. I love the ATB system and I want more of this awesomeness.
@@Mangomesh hes definitely earned that legend status
The FF7 Remake series has taken that ATB system to its zenith. It’s so good.

I'd love Ito to be in charge of XVII. His stuff is great. I would like Ito to return to XII's battle system and improve upon it.

tetra master was never well regarded. triple triad was so well regarded however, that everyone forgave tetra master's existence.
