A couple of ALICE tricks from someone that is too old. 1. Cut the meat hooks off the back of the Y harness, Replace with 550 Cord. Tie a loop of 550 through the alice clip slots on all pouches and loop around the belt so they don't fall off. Cut the dividers off the inside of the mag pouches. SAW pouch is good for utility pouch. If your are using a ruck cut the padding off the y harness so it does not dig in. Compass/Field Dressing pouch is good for a can of Copenhagen. Dummy cord the canteens to belt. For Canteen cut the tip of nipple off so it is about .5 diameter so it does not grow mold.
I like the idea of dummy cording the canteens, I didn't think about that. When you are talking about cutting the tip of the canteen nipple off, I assume you are talking about the canteens with the NBC cap? I have one of those and then two that have just a plain cap and opening.
@@Stormchaser87 you also don't want the canteen dummy cord to be too long either. Just enough so you don't lose it at night, or if you need to drop it quick you can and not have to worry about losing it. Once you find some cover you can put it back in the pouch. Dummy cord your compass too. You don't want to lose that.
My 1st deployment in Iarq we actually had this for the 1st month or so but a lot of guys didn’t ever switch over to Molly and it was mix shades of OD, woodland and desert BDUs… damn I’m so old
If you're trying to equip you and your buddies, I highly recommend alice gear. However, it has it's set backs: 1.) Its super slow - adding pull tabs to mags speeds things up a bit. Indexing is a pain. And you need a dump pouch. 2.) If you're getting a buttpack, Get the butt pack with the fastex buckes - the old school ones with the pull straps are a pain to futz up and access gear. 3.) If you have extra $$$, look into getting British PLCE- the Brits updated the ALICE gear to be a little less cumbersome.
Thanks for the comment and providing this valuable information! Tip #3 may be a concept less commonly known/explored to some, including some of us here.
It isn’t 100% phased out of the marine corps LC-3 Belt are still widely used as duty belts in garrison, Alice canteen covers were still issued when I went through MCT in 2022, and OOD’s still use Alice pistol mag pouches.
This is a really nice and informative video! I like the history behind it, and I didn't feel like it was just an airsoft video. Would be awesome if you made more videos like this! Cool kit too, love the old school woodland!
Great video. I've always loved ALICE gear, and I own a set of it myself too. Something important that you did mention but I think should've been touched on a bit more is that the belt can also attach other webbing. Something that I've seen a lot of people do nowadays is pair British PLCE yokes/webbing (Not much more expensive!) with the ALICE pistol belts, which is infinitely more comfortable and better distributes the weight. I personally prefer the ALICE webbing aesthetically, but I do plan to eventually jump on that bandwagon since I've seen the advantages of it while out airsofting with friends.
just an FYI the guy wearing the LBV style carrier @7:40 area, his pouches wouldn't have been allowed in the field because of the button system it uses. the only things I remember ever being able to use button in my time from 1994 to 2009 were the "compass" pouch" and canteen covers. buttons specially metal buttons were/are a big No Go. the paint rubs off to the bare metal and becomes reflective. The LBV's that were issued back in the 90's we would use black duct tape over the buttoned areas.
I collect all of it. I have several full kits all NOS. I also collect the LBV88 and lbv88e with the correct buttpacks for those. I have an entire spare room packed full of gear, uniforms, and other equipment. Not much Molle, since I personally still prefer alice.
Great video! I have two ALICE pouches for ak47 magazine, they are basically the normal mag pouch but 2 Inches taller and no grenade strips. Its also nice because my quick dethatch bipods fin in them when I'm not using them. down side they were kind expensive compared to the dirt cheap M16 pouches.
That's awesome! I've never seen Alice pouches that big, those must be aftermarket ones, which would probably explain the price. I have an aftermarket Alice mag pouch that can hold 5 AR mags instead of 3, or it makes a really good GP pouch. - Southpaw
I will say when I was in the marines 2014-2020 we would go to surplus shops and grab Alice main pack frames to replace the ones on our issued main pack because it was so much better
That's actually really interesting and surprising to hear that the Alice frames were still being used relatively recently. I thought the newer plastic ruck frames were supposed to be decent nowadays compared to the original Molle 2 ones. Thank you for sharing your first hand experience, love to hear it!
5:23 Georgian military actually used these for AK mags, since in 2000s they recieved ALICE gear from the US but they still used old soviet AKMs or AK74s, so in 2006~ they used these but you can still see special forces use larger LC2 mag pouch that can hold AK mags? They look longer than a normal alice pouch not sure if they stretched overtime or they are specifically designed for AK mags.
I find it funny that in the world of Eastern Bloc collecting people say the color is inconsistent, or that older gear was used longer because they are poor Communist Countries. Yet US gear has the same quirks. I know someone who was married to a Iraq war vet who was stuck using PASGT in the 2004 invasion, and who wasn't issued plates or anything. Everyone has units they prioritize getting gear to, grunts and conscripts just get what's left over.
Absolutely, the same can be seen even today in the US Military. I know some guys that are still being issued UCP pattern gear with OCP uniforms. The early 2000s were a really wild time in the US for GI gear with the Alice system being phased out for the Molle system. Both systems were being mixed about with each other, topped off with woodland and desert pattern gear being worn together.
hey, great video, very informative I've been trying to get into the ALICE system and that style of gear and uniform, and I was wondering what jacket are you wearing and mask?
Thank you! The gas mask is an M40. The Jacket and Trousers are both US Army surplus JSLIST CBRN suit. If purchased new, they will be packaged in a green vacuum-sealed package that should have a "W" on it to indicate the woodland pattern. Otherwise you cant go wrong with a used or unpackaged set, especially for airsoft.
What kind of helmet and gas mask are those? The drip is so good im considering just stealing your whole look. (But I'll be adding one of those massive ALICE backpacks just cuz').
Honestly ALICE gear is pretty cool but something thats dropped off the face of the earth is Gen 1 Molle which I've barely found any info about though i own a vest the accompanying belts 1 for regular use of the vest while the other is to assist in carrying the MOLLE pack while being able to quick release (which isn't too great considering the frame is polymer) but the pouches for early MOLLE are compatible for use with ALICE belts because the strap are long enough to weave around the belt whilst still being able to properly secure and even when used with the MOLLE vest you can see the influence from ALICE mag pouches in how the MOLLE pouches sit on the vest when attached
I'm not sure I fully understand your question. If you are asking about reloading from your shooting arm side, I am not sure what the correct doctrine is, but personally I use my trigger hand to grab a mag out of the pouch and insert it into the rifle, while holding my rifle with my right hand. I am a left-handed shooter, so this may be opposite for you. - Southpaw
Thank you, I am a big fan of Cold War kits myself. My M16 is an old ICS Olympic Arms M16. I believe ICS discontinued making them a few years ago - Darren (Southpaw)
@@Lostandfoundbinwow The M40 gas mask lenses and the mask itself is not rated for BBs, they would damage the mask. I use it as a prop only, and wear a regular face mask during play as seen in part of the video. I do believe there are airsoft rated gas mask replicas out there though.
Awesome video! I have recently been contemplating making a loadout like this, I love the old school aesthetic. What coat is it you’re wearing in some of the clips?
Hi there, the coat and trousers are actually an NBC Suit, specifically called JSLIST. I bought mine off of eBay for about as much as a normal BDU uniform would cost.
So I'm currently trying to get an alice setup going, are the belt and suspenders supposed to be worn over top of a regular belt, or do they sit over a bdu?
The proper way to wear the Alice belt and suspenders, according to the ALICE field manual from the 1970s, is to have the suspenders adjusted so that the Alice belt sits high on your waist closer to your belly button. This keeps the whole rig clear of your legs so that the mag pouches don't hit your thighs when you are crouched. This also keeps your belt line clear if you need to wear an additional belt for your pants - Southpaw.
1. missing the late 60s metal buckle belt 2. how about the IIFS system? 3. blaming not compatible to AK mags is like blaming a spoon can't slice properly 4. weight comparison?
Hey, thanks for the feedback! This video was meant for our team member to provide background to his current airsoft loadout and any resulting opinions or implications of the current pieces he owns. We appreciate the interest in these topics you've brought up - especially incorporating a weight comparison - and will do more deep dives on specific ALICE Gear components, and other systems into the future.
I'm thinking he didn't mention the LC-1 belt because he did not have one to display. The LC-2 and LC-3 belts are more commonly seen. I see the IIFS harness in a couple clips, but he could probably make that a separate video, it would be too long to talk about here. Same thing with Molle. The AK mags not being compatible is to show that this setup isn't designed for AK users. Those are a really popular airsoft platform. Weight comparison to what? He mentions how the Alice system distributes weight pretty evenly. Its a nylon system, so its not going to weigh much unloaded. Add in the known weight of the equipment you are adding to it, and there is your load weight.
PMAGs do fit in these pouches, however they may be tight, so we advise some sort of magpulls or pull tabs to make it easier & quicker when reloading. The NSN for these ALICE pouches should be 8465-00-001-6482.
I have unfortunately found this out the hard way. Wore my Alice kit to an airsoft event, and by the end of the day, I had raw and scraped skin on my sides from the Alice clips rubbing all day. I have since invested in a Blackhawk belt pad that I have yet to field, but I feel that it should solve the clip rubbing problem nicely - Southpaw

@Stormchaser87 yeah with the NBC bit. It is the grey cone-shaped thingy. Don't totally remove it as it helps seal the canteen
