YES! Most people only see retirement in the historical sense of "you stop working and you draw down your assets and hope to die before you run out of money." What they don't understand is that it retirement can be many things to different people. For me it is about financial AUTONOMY (no need to work, no dependence on external support, and enjoying security/stability). It is also about BUILDING WEALTH not drawing it down. The biggest question people have is "how long will my money last". I hated having to answer it, so designed a portfolio that made more income than I consume/yr PLUS grows capital so I increase my wealth every year.
Interesting perspective on scarcity mindset. The idea that we’re expecting our money to do the emotional labor is profound. For me, I not only need to trust my skills and abilities to figure it out, but that God will guide me in figuring it out.
Thank you. I was let go (@54) from a 29 year corporate career last year and decided to "be done." Most of the people in my life have really struggled to understand who and what I am now. It has been odd explaining to people that I'm just not doing "that" anymore and don't need to work for the money. This was VERY helpful. I'm sharing.
This was powerful! I have realized that I have been retired from doing meaningless work for quite a few years now. My work has meaning, and I earn a living doing what I believe is meaningful work.
This is the second speech I've watched from this woman and I'd really wish she would get deeper on her topics. Plus, so much omg I'm embarrassed I retired early! I'm not confident enough to believe I can help myself if something goes wrong. And worst of all "You should think about continuing work in 'retirement' instead of just stopping altogether" Forget a scarcity mindset - she's stuck in wage slave mindset! I'm hearing money money money and never TIME. What is the TIME cost you're saving by not sacrificing 45+ hours of your week? What is the equivalent monetary value of not having the stressors of work? The fleeting worries of "my portfolio isn't doing too hot and i need to adjust by 8%" is minuscule in comparison. I am in disbelief she has her own FI conference.
Diania, this some of the most insightful and thought provoking content on the subject. Thank you for putting it out there I look forward to finding your podcast and other videos.
Bravo! I just gave my resignation notice at 49 and have been struggling with using the word retirement for fear of judgement. Using it as a verb as you described is far more logical and easier in a social setting. The word retirement implies that you're going to set on your as* and not contribute to society which is so far from the truth for most of us early "retirees".
Congratulations on your resignation notice. Thanks for watching and commenting. Diania has a wonderful way of communicating on these topics. If you haven't yet, check out her economeconference.com/ The Financial Independence community is incredible and open to the nuances of early retirement so no judgements.
I have never really done any of the FIRE calculations or anything but it really seems like a great strategy. My wife and I are 35. I believe we can pay off our house in the next 10 years then crank out retirement and savings significantly higher after that. I'd love to get to a soft FIRE where I can work a light or part time job to continue progress but not need to for keeping a float until needing my retirement accounts.
You nailed it. This is incredibly helpful and was well presented. Thank you for your wisdom and insight. This perfectly sums up my struggle and probably that of many others!

If you do something without getting paid, that's a hobby to me. I put a lot of hours doing genealogy, I don' t get paid, so that is one of my hobbies. Another one is sport fishing.

Agree completely that money is just a part of life and we will need to use our other resources to create a good one. Thanks for watching!
Great one!

I would say you quite your corporate job. I personally wouldn’t use the word retired.
Really insightful, thank you for your contribution to the discussion.
Agreed! Diania always gives us something to think about and unique ways to handle some of these more psychological aspects of Financial Independence.
One of the best videos I have watched on this topic.
Glad you liked it. More to come, each Wednesday.

Amazing! I want to hear more
A new video is released each Wednesday at noon. Thanks for watching.
The definition of “early retirement” presented by this speaker is actually “career change”. It has nothing to do with “retirement”.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@CampFII retired early and this talk resonated with me.
So change the meaning of the word for me and share that meaning with other people so I am legitamite?!?!?!
ExACTly! :-) Thanks for watching and commenting.
