I want to share my grandfather's story. Hungary mostly wanted to remain neutral but due to proximity really had no chance to evade Nazi Germany's political gravity, a prime minister even committed suicide when left with no choice. As puppet had to partake on Eastern front against Soviets. We were preparing and finalising a separate peace with east and west, but learning about this the nazis occupied us. My grandfather was a well liked butcher in our town (60km west of Budapest). Got drafted into the military. An officer friend helped arrange that he could remain home as an anti air serviceman, instead of being taken to the bloodiest eastern front. Eventually the soviets occupied Hungary. Our town was occupied back and forth numerous times by nazi and soviet forces. He did what he could to to hide, not just himself but others. He was captured by soviets. Taken by train to east, possibly to gulag. But at entering a counting station, when lining them up for processing he begged the guard to let him take a dump. He went to bushes and crouched, second later sprinted as fast as he could and got away. The officer friend once said to him if ever gets captured he should walk 1 km parallel by the highway back home, which he did. He was one of the luckier survivors of the time, let's say due to positive karma. He helped jews hide during nazi reign. In our street soviets shot at wall random 12 civilians, from this for an orphan he acted as father. He said that big proportion of soviet troops were war torn, even feeble. And that amongst nazis he saw the most frighteningly efficient cold ones. Later during soviet rule's communism our family house of generations was taken by state. In December this year will be the 10th year he passed away at 92. He was always tried to be positive, humble, never meaning to hurt anyone and for me was the role model of simple goodness. I miss him.

I don’t like how all of Germany’s soldiers were called Nazis. Not all of them agreed with Hitler. A pretty large number that isn’t really mentioned is conscripts. The most devoted were the SS, they were true followers of Hitler. Why the German military didn’t decide to just off Hitler then and there is difficult to explain. There are a lot of psychological factors you have to look into, including fear.

The amount of disposable "red army" soldiers is unthinkable, 8.7 million who died, not counting those who survived and won the eastern war.. It's hard to imagine that many people were willing or forced to join and give their lives to defend their country, but even more so millions of germans who were on the offensive end

I'm original from Poland and last searched about my family. I found that many of them died. Too many. My family what I think has almost no jewish people in it, if I'm right. It just only because my family comes from central Poland. Now, I'm living in the Netherlands, and I'm now in high school. I find it surprising that you all don't know this. The deaths of civilians (blockade in Leningrad, city bombings, evacuations that killed many civilians) and many men in the family on the front: men, parents, sons, grandparents laid their heads in that war. The same only happened in different ways throughout the eastern front. The West was lucky if it could be said that the Germans were afraid to openly destroy entire families they would send them to the eastern front of all the most terrible concentration camps in Poland. Besides its unlikely the Japanese would of invaded the USSR from the East. First they had terrible experience fighting the Soviets in brief border skirmishes during the 30s (Look up battles of Khalkhin Gol), they knew their Army was no match for the Soviets if they were to fight in the open plains of Manchuria. This military set back made them abandon any plans for fighting the Soviets in the East Siberia. 2nd there no resources in East Siberia that the Japanese wanted. They instead chose the "Southern strategy" of attacking the East Indies (Indonesia) for its resource-rich islands (oil and rubber). The only thing I can think of that the Japanese may have wanted in Eastern USSR would be the port city of Vladivostok with its deep water port, but the Japanese already had the warm water port of Lushunkou (then called Port Arthur), so it wouldnt be worth it

I don’t like how all of Germany’s soldiers were called Nazis. Not all of them agreed with Hitler. A pretty large number that isn’t really mentioned is conscripts. The most devoted were the SS, they were true followers of Hitler.
Why the German military didn’t decide to just off Hitler then and there is difficult to explain. There are a lot of psychological factors you have to look into, including fear.
Yea, uh, Hitler didn't hold the entire country hostage. Most Germans wanted to make their country great, and that included following their leader's orders.

Let's not kid ourselves. The Nazi high command was absolutely complicit in the war crimes perpetrated by Hitler. No question about it.
And while their soldiers might not all believe in Nazism (although many did), they are still soldiers of Nazi Germany. Therefore, Nazis (at least by default).

This whole "fear" argument only applied near the end of the war, when Germany was suffering more from losses.
The amount of disposable "red army" soldiers is unthinkable, 8.7 million who died, not counting those who survived and won the eastern war.. It's hard to imagine that many people were willing or forced to join and give their lives to defend their country, but even more so millions of germans who were on the offensive end
But they were fighting on homeland, they didn't have a choice, they had to protect their home from the invaders, it's the soldiers who were sent over seas who were most likely looked at as "disposable" or expendable

моего деда призвали на службу уже после войны в 60-е, но им пришлось служить полтора срока, т.к. он попал именно в тот период, когда из-за войны была маленькая рождаемость и спустя 18 лет не нашли просто столько призывников чтоб было кому сменить их

I'm original from Poland and last searched about my family. I found that many of them died. Too many. My family what I think has almost no jewish people in it, if I'm right. It just only because my family comes from central Poland. Now, I'm living in the Netherlands, and I'm now in high school. I find it surprising that you all don't know this. We learn this information when we are less than 10,kinda, and are always remembered. People still think that Poland just gave up because they were closed in, but even many Poles in Poland saved many Jews. Even though 3 million of the Jewish people that died were polish (of the total of 6 million making it 50%). But the biggest joke for Germany is that they never had a affect on the nationalism of the two countries I'm connected with: Poland and the Netherlands.

there was not a single family in the Soviet Union that would not be affected by the war. The scariest thing in my eyes is that many families have disappeared altogether. The deaths of civilians (blockade in Leningrad, city bombings, evacuations that killed many civilians) and many men in the family on the front: men, parents, sons, grandparents laid their heads in that war. The same only happened in different ways throughout the eastern front. The West was lucky if it could be said that the Germans were afraid to openly destroy entire families they would send them to the eastern front of all the most terrible concentration camps in Poland. Do not forget this when you say that Eastern Europeans are different (yes we are different, we are tormented by hardship, deprivation and pain) No Polish, Russian, Lithuanian, Ukrainian will ever give their land to anyone. Here are the graves of our ancestors and their souls here. We are bound with these edges by heart. and we will not let any enemy trample upon our land.

The Red Army engaged and destroyed about 90% of the Wehrmacht. Western allies only fought 10% of it. Soviets are why Allies won, at least in Europe

@Alex Woodward Not sure why you bring up Japan, they had nothing to do with the Eastern Front between Germany and Soviet Union. Besides its unlikely the Japanese would of invaded the USSR from the East. First they had terrible experience fighting the Soviets in brief border skirmishes during the 30s
(Look up battles of Khalkhin Gol), they knew their Army was no match for the Soviets if they were to fight in the open plains of Manchuria. This military set back made them abandon any plans for fighting the Soviets in the East Siberia. 2nd there no resources in East Siberia that the Japanese wanted. They instead chose the "Southern strategy" of attacking the East Indies (Indonesia) for its resource-rich islands (oil and rubber). The only thing I can think of that the Japanese may have wanted in Eastern USSR would be the port city of Vladivostok with its deep water port, but the Japanese already had the warm water port of Lushunkou (then called Port Arthur), so it wouldnt be worth it
