talented girls, beautiful harmonies, I came here looking for the slightly more 'electric' version by The Men They Couldn't Hang, which I really love. The Staves album really is a stunning piece of work
on't sing love songs, you'll wake my mother She's sleeping here right by my side And in her right hand a silver dagger She says that I can't be your bride "All men are false", says my mother "They'll tell you wicked, lovin' lies The very next evening, they'll court another Leave you alone to pine and sigh" My daddy is a handsome devil He's got a chain five miles long And on every link a heart does dangle Of another maid he's loved and wronged Go court another tender maiden And hope that she will be your wife For I've been warned, and I've decided To sleep alone all of my life
I love this! As good as Baez! Different scale. I think many have gotten so used to Baez's "achingly pure soprano" that if this song isn't sung that way, it is somehow inferior to Joan.
You should also listen to the lovely Louise Jordan song this song, its available on RUclips. And, incidentally, it is not a traditional American folk ballad, it originally cane from the UK where it has been known to exist since the early 19th century.
Easily the most heartbreaking rendition of this song on RUclips. That little fall on the end of each phrase...beautiful and sad.
Sometimes one can't believe there's so much beauty and wonder in this world ... I love those ladies and the spell they spread!
This is the song/video I met The Staves for the very first time ... I fell under their spell at once and I'll stay so for the rest of my life
Sublime harmonies as always
Hauntingly Beautiful! I keep listening to it over and over
I first head the song in the early 60's by Joan Baez. The harmonizing & arrangement makes it different, but both were equally stunning and beautiful.
Yeah the Staves twist on this song sounds complimentary and shines a new light on the original song rather than being just a cover.
Beautiful.
Quality poured into the musical glass.
Well done girls! Beautiful harmony!
this is breathtakingly beautiful. wow.
Very nice! Very interesting and beautiful harmony.
Beautiful rendition, great harmonious voices.
this is so beautiful that i'm crying
This must be what the sailors heard when the sirens called them, beautiful, haunting, unforgetable
Even more amazing live!
This song is so beautiful in every version! Ladies, I rank you number 2 , right after white antelope :)
This is absolutely lovely :-)
Beautiful harmonies!

To sleep alone all of my life
And they sing all the verses ,good track.
Dylan sang this song, he didn't write it. It is a very old traditional folk song.
Im spellbound

Maybe, or maybe not
Great song tho
Oh boy ...
Oh it's so sad!
I agree...even for a guy like me it's hard to keep it dry ....
Your mother is right.
Traditional folk song - probably of English origin
Didn't bob Dylan write this?
Nope. Not even nearly
I would marry all three and we could be on an episode of sister wives
Beautiful harmonies !
