I usually use 16 gauge zinc coated steel wire (cuz it's stronger than copper). If I'm doing a hanger for an ornament, then I'll use 16 gauge pre-tinned copper wire. They're both listed on My Favorite Tools & Supplies page here: www.mountainwomanproducts.com/stained-glass-tools-my-favorites/. 😀

Does this wire take patina?

Pretinned copper, yes. For zinc coated steel, ya could try the patina specifically made for zinc came ( I haven't tried it).
