Like - I’ve watched many of the reaction videos. Commenting on yours because of the way it stood out: the sheer, unmitigated GLEE from you over this. Astounding levels of manic desperation. Congratulations on finding your niche I guess.
I saw someone say something like “No apology will ever cover the fact that from now on, every time they upload now, we’ll know they didn’t want us to see it” and that’s kinda how I saw it. It was such unnecessary ostracism, for literally no reason, that they now HAVE to walk back because it just isn’t viable anymore for their business to flourish. There was literally no path for them to stand on their decision if they wanted to stay afloat but regardless still a win I guess.
I think they wanted you to see it, they just wanted you to pay for it. I feel some sympathy for them in that - it's OK to set a price for your work. Based on what I've seen, they should be making decent money as a channel, but after the costs of their studio (which I don't really think they need, at least not in the expensive location it's in now), costs for making the shows, then split between their 25 staff, it seems like its pretty lucrative but not millions. The thing I don't like is how they acted like anyone can afford the subscription price and how insensitive they were in hyping up this big announcement when the announcement turned out to basically be "if you don't pay us you will lose out on all the stuff you've been getting until now"
The fact they loudly stated they wanted to double dip into their fans' wallets, I can't enjoy their content anymore. Plus, an apology that has "sorry we explained poorly" always sounds like "sorry you're stupid to understand what we meant." Least they apologized. The bar is in hell cause of the standard RUclipsr apology
yes! they really expected both patreon and subbing to their channel before you get access to all their stuff. that's crazy. glad it was walked back. but agree on your point about how the apology kind of skirted around apologising specifically for being greedy. which they were being, regardless of how many staff they employ. That's their own issue.
Honestly I can't believe you're only starting out, I've seen much worse video essays from people who've been at it much longer than you have. You're funny and easy to follow - I feel like my subscription is an early investment, and I'm excited to see what you'll do next!
I appreciate you not immediately forgiving them like some people have. The bar for RUclipsr apologies is in hell so not being outlandishly insensitive doesn't mean they should be trusted.
I never particularly liked Steven, but now I’ll never forget that his gold flake eating, tesla driving ass told us with total confidence that $6 a month to watch him travel around the world eating expensive food in the middle of a global recession, on the brink of WW3, was super affordable and worth it for everyone. Not in a million years, sir, read the damn room.
Just something smells fishy when they're talking about not being able to keep up with costs and yet in the initial video they reveal they're expanding and hiring even more people and bringing back a hugely expensive series that involves watching them eating extremely expensive food when people are struggling to buy groceries.
This apology has the tone of a hostage negotiation with a maniac about to shoot lol. That being said, I’m glad they didn’t decide to double down on their terrible decision
I can’t shake the feeling that important info is being withheld from us..this apology didn’t address the *real* reason why they made this horrible decision to begin with. I really feel they needed this to resolve some serious pressing financial issue & that’s why it was so hasty & not thought out whatsoever
Every thing you said is bang on. I really don't like how Ryan tried to basically emotionally manipulate the audience by saying "If we didn't launch the streaming platform watcher WOULD HAVE ENDED" There was a bunch of different ways they could have went about this and still they are somewhat sticking to there guns on watcher TV. I don't think they get that the issues will persist cause they refuse to acknowledge that they cant run a business and refuse to let people go. All this was happening even with a successful patreon and now they just traded it for a different version
I hate to say it but I definitely feel like they’re hiding something about the whole “relevant to advertisers” thing, they have some of the most tame content I’ve seen and I have no idea how they are struggling with sponsors. I literally watched a sponsored video last night where one of the ppl in said video PISSED THEMSELF FOR A JOKE 😭😭 If a joke like that can be in a sponsored video with no issues there is definitely something else going on here
Gotta say, it was yours and MoistCritikal's videos on the situation that stuck out to me as the most reasonable and critical (lol) interpretations of the entire debacle. And still is for the Update! Also, your sense of humor and comedic timing is fantastic; youve got great energy lol Im def joining the fresh 200 club
I try not to compare my life to others', but in terms of interior design, my goodness, queen, give me those white walls, that dark sofa, and all of your ceramics, dark furniture, and botanical artwork, please and thank you. Also, you're really inspiring me to just... CREATE.
Thank you 😭 the little mushroom vase next to me and all the ceramics are actually hand made by my roomate! She’s a potter and has a little shop and I’d be happy to give you their account ☺️
The first thing to do when a company is struggling is 'trim the fat' and focus on the core of what made you a success in the first place. Not take on lots more 'fat' that hasn't been market researched, and pay for it off the backs of fans with less money than you have. Do they 'need' 25 staff? Do they 'need' a studio in Hollywood? Do they need to produce too many spin-off videos that don't get as many views? I'd start trimming a lot of fat before offloading costs onto loyal fans that put you where you are in the first place. An inefficient, mismanaged bloated business model fueled by ambition (I don't want to say ego) is not the fans responsiblilty.
You did great, I would of never guest you only have 200 subscribers. I've been listening to a lot of takes on this and yours is as good as any. Keep plugging away, you'll get there.
They must be handling their finances very badly if they were at risk of not being able to afford to create Watcher videos anymore. I saw someone say that if everyone on their Patreon were only subscribed to the lowest tier, they would still be making $70k a month, nearly $900k a year. They have a successful youtube channel that definitely has to be earning them good income and then there's the additional income of sponsorships and all that. They have to be earning a few million dollars a year. Ryan wants more production value when it's not needed, Shane recently spent $55k on his wedding, Steven's series itself is expensive, they have 25 employees when they could probably just have about 5. Their "eat the rich" days are definitely over 😬
tbh something i do appreciate about this video is the lack of parasocial talk? a lot of the response i’ve seen to this comes across as not even CLOSE to this level of level headness. def looking forward to your future videos and excited to watch your backlog when i have time!
I have to say you have so much charisma and personality that I am sure if you keep at this you will continue to grow!! I will be watching and cheering you on! As to this apology. I just don’t believe they have any idea what to do next. They intended not to use RUclips so as to force their viewers to pay. That tells me they didn’t want to give anyone a choice. Now that they have to it feels like they will come to a crossroads again sometime down the road. Will they stop and try this again? I don’t have faith anymore. I am glad they apologized but I can’t go back.
Sometimes a little bit of bullying works 🤷 Also I would be crying if I was Steven, the man got send to the shadow realm over the course of the last couple days by the fans of his own company
@@cassiel.6918 tbf he can't win, too calm seems he doesn't care, too sad seems like he's playing the victim. we should be focusing on shane and ryan too, this was their idea.
I was a big fan of Shane and Ryan, followed them from Buzzfeed to Watcher. While I'm on a limited income, I don't go out a lot, so my "fun money" often goes toward streaming services and things - the cost for me isn't necessarily the problem. I don't want to sign up for another site. I already choose to just not watch plenty of popular shows if they're not on steaming services I already have because I can't be bothered anymore to manage another subscription, another app, or to download another thing. I watched Alizee's video on this situation and she makes a full time living from RUclips and from her view, they have very advertiser friendly content and so I really feel like there is an issue of them overspending here - overhiring, doing big budget projects, etc, even though nobody asked for that, and now they are asking their subscribers to foot the bill.
@@Maloola_ Genuinely you're SO funny. I'm sure it's difficult to find an audience on youtube, but I really hope the almighty algorithm will promote you because this is some really good content and you ARE cut out for this.

The one good thing to come out of the Watcher, blah blah we're sitting on a couch saying words mess is finding some new streamers to replace them, like you.
moistcr1tikal talked about in both of his videos about this how he also doesnt understand how they could have any issues with advertisers, he has his own company that deals with youtubers and advertisers/sponsorships and said that to him Watcher's videos are every advertisers dream - they're long, well produced and have a large and highly engaged audience. and at the end of the day most of the sponsor really just care about the numbers and engagement, and Watcher has it really good. it's also weird for them to be worried about youtube changing constantly and feeling uncertain as if launching a whole new, completely unknown platform on a separate site won't be even more uncertain. i would understand perhaps making a deal with Netflix or some other partner, but just a brand new site? so it does sound like just all lies and excuses to me, too. they just wanted more money, so they created a second subscription on top of their already existing Patreon(and now with the changes WatcherTV is literally just what many creators do on Patreon). now they're lucky with all this fiasko if they don't end up losing any money, so if the goal was really to get more money so they can keep the show running, it should end within the next year, right? i doubt that even with these changes they will actually make the extra money they oh so desperately need also: for the robotic tone and it not feeling like they're actually sorry, it's mainly cause they're more upset about not getting the money they thought they will and less upset about their fans' feelings. for me Steven was extra robotic, that man looked and sounded like he did not want to be there or say any of these things lmao
Dude Steven and Ryan stood out the most to me because Steven is clearly reading from a script he doesn’t agree with, and Ryan looks and sounds like he’s angry and trying to cover it up very poorly. It almost feels like he’s rolling his eyes without rolling them??
Well said!👏🏻 your coverage of this has been the best I’ve seen. I’ve followed the boys since the first Unsolved, so this was WILD! The fact that they did the Try Guys apology was… unfortunate (Steven even has the exact same pose as Eugene.😬). But at least there wasn’t an ukulele as well. Keep up the great work! 👏🏻
Do they really think that I'm gonna pay 6 bucks for every youtube channel I want to watch?? Or, do they think THEIR content is so much better that they deserve my 6 bucks over everyone else I watch for free? Imagine every single youtuber charged a $6 subscription.
I totally agree with you on the apology. So many people including RUclipsrs think the apology is good it’s not. The fact is if sufficient number of people signed up for watcher tv + there wouldn’t be an apology. Steven Lim’s body language and tone looked disingenuous and scripted. You lose credibility when you flew first class and dropped $55 k on a wedding venue then cry about not being able to pay staff fairly. At least the husband and wife are consistent.
i watched your goodbye watcher video and found it to be the most interesting, digestible, and relatable video that i found regarding the whole situation and just wanted to say after watching this new vid that i appreciate your vibes and sense of humor a lot! i'll be sticking around going forward :)
20,000 patrons even at the LOWEST $5 tier is $100,000, add that to the $520,000 a YEAR that they get from VIEWS (According to Penguinz0) , and YEA, it's just a MONEY GRAB. They just want to keep living Large. One spent $55K on their wedding. They can move out of HOLLYWOOD and relocate to a LOWER RENT area, to avoid the high rent, plus they can stop eating $1,000 Steaks and Pizzas covered in gold foil.
i love the little editing joke of the black circle being "view your reflection here" already grabbing my attention comedically before the actual analysis verrry glad to be within your first 200 subs
About they sounding insincere, yeah, I totally get it. I know it's not a big deal, but as someone who doesn't like to distrust others, it feels weird that you never know when someone is lying (if they're not super obvious ofc). Like, if you had a keyword or something that could 100% prove you're being honest, the liars could just take it and use it too. All we can do is judge for ourselves if we believe them or not. (sorry for mistakes, english is my 2nd language) Great video btw, loved the intro
I think the RUclips apology would have worked better if they wouldve utilized a ukelele or a "young and reckless" performative dance routine as no true YT apology is complete without one (they did 3 guys on a sofa one which is pretty much industry standard for ex BuzzFeed employees so I will give them that). Come on now! That wouldnt have added to your production costs.
I subscribed somewhere around the 200 mark I reckon. Don't give up because your first 2 videos got 100 views, especially as you're talking here about giving things time. Looking forward to seeing where you go next 😊
@@Maloola_ OOH Fellow Dropout fan I see. A woman of good taste. Tbh I would watch a video essay just comparing why Dropout worked (2018 was a different time, the death of CollegeHumor, more content, more personalities, better marketing, still using youtube (channel memberships so people could watch outside of the US, uploading episodes that do well), better upload schedule, generally having More Stuff, ect) and why Watcher TV (with none of the things aforementioned) crashed and burned.
Also I can't get over "we wanted to compromise our content to appeal to advertisers" because that was one of the same reasons Dropout gave for starting Dropout and keeping some work off-youtube. Because I will admit I don't know a lot about Watcher's content, but like... I do not think they were as edgy/non-advertiser-friendly as 2018 Dropout. I don't even think they're as edgy as 2024 Dropout.
Great commentary! I think the amount of success and money they were making made them completely unaware of how the “real world” their fans live in actually functions.
I really wish I had gotten your video first. Apparently the algorithm is still feeding me reactions ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Sub 424, your sass was spot on with one minor disagreement in opinion with me. I think they watched the numbers over the weekend of signups and RUclips subs and realized it would tank their business. This was apology or bankruptcy imo
I am still confused. Wasn't the major reason for leaving because of advertising holding back their. "Artistic Creativity?" But now they are back on RUclips, so does that mean they gave up on their artistic creativity for the almighty dollar. Seems like these dude would sell their own moms for a nickle.
100% what i've been thinking too, if it was so difficult to be on youtube and to deal with advertisers then they wouldnt have gone back. i doubt their youtube content will now not include ads and sponsors, they just didnt want to work hard for money so they hoped the fans would just fill their pockets monthly without them lifting a finger
@@someonesomewhere517 Thank you I can't believe more people haven't caught onto that yet. They were gonna make the exact same stuff as their youtube channel for sure. They just thought they could get more money. Have a great day.
I mean, I genuinely don't get what you want them to do. They apologized, what more do you want? Deleting the channel, never show themselves on the internet again? Do people not deserve a 2nd chance at anything. Fuck up once and be done with. Yeah, it's a pretty big fuck up, and I was pretty pissed off too but c'mon.
I don’t think you finished the video 😅 I said “what else could they have said” and the answer is nothing. The apology and correction did what it needed to do, it was just a little difficult to watch. I even said I’d continue to watch their videos at the end. It’s up to the audience to choose how they want to feel about it. Personally, I view them differently now but I still enjoy a lot of their shows and I’ll still watch some of their content. This was just a fascinating sequence of events

We just don't understand why you even need more money because you're making bank, some of us cant afford it, and we don't ask for much. The mentality of us being too dumb to understand and too selfish to care, is disgusting and out of touch. The way they went about the initial announcement was trash too. They made it sound like some big exciting announcement was coming. Then suddenly it was like " Surprise! If you ever wanna see us again, you're gonna have to pay" They don't want to let people go, so they're gonna let most of their fans go? They don't want to struggle to find sponsors, so they want the fans that do stay to fund the whole thing? They talk about luxury in their life, but want to start this when most of their fans can barely survive? It's outrageous

@@bulkvanderhuge9006not 55k on their wedding, it was on the venue alone
love your vibes, your humor, and happy to be a part of the 200 gang!
i love the little editing joke of the black circle being "view your reflection here"
already grabbing my attention comedically before the actual analysis
verrry glad to be within your first 200 subs
Honestly so excited to be one of your first 250 subscribers! Great video & looking forward to more commentary in the future!
(sorry for mistakes, english is my 2nd language)
Great video btw, loved the intro
I wanted to see someone play a ukulele.
The only good thing to come out of this whole mess is that I've seen multiple people get Dropout subscriptions instead of Watcher.
Fr RUclips is healing 💗 I’d buy two subscriptions on separate accounts for dropout before I’d purchase watcher
Oooo noted that would be a good one 🫡
@@apersonontheinternet9085 Watcher has about as much edge as a snails shell
Great commentary! I think the amount of success and money they were making made them completely unaware of how the “real world” their fans live in actually functions.
I really wish I had gotten your video first. Apparently the algorithm is still feeding me reactions ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Sub 424, your sass was spot on with one minor disagreement in opinion with me. I think they watched the numbers over the weekend of signups and RUclips subs and realized it would tank their business. This was apology or bankruptcy imo
Youre definitely cut out for this, great vid!
Subscribed because of your Watcher vid. Love the vibes :3
Same tbh.
You definitely need to keep making videos. You earned my subscription. Love your commentary.
New sub here. Found you after the Watchocalypse 😅
When I am one of your 300 spartans😌 Can't believe you're new, your content is great :)
You mentioned Eddy and Ted going to all the Margaritavilles! Yessssss
Favorite intro lol
Just give me a heads up when you launch your streaming platform
We need more videos!!!!
I bet it was the same PR team Try Guys used
I love this 😂
hell yea subscriber 373
Plus it literally came out of nowhere. No warning. No heads up.
And Helllllllo!
Have a great day.
im seeing they have FOURTEEN thousand patreon members let alone six, its abhorrent lmao
Most of those are free accounts. They dropped down to 6k paid accounts.
@@Maloola_ I didn't watch the whole video.
@@Kiwi-qd2feaverage YT commenter behavior
@@Kiwi-qd2feof course you didn’t.
@@Kiwi-qd2fe I love the guys but they seem more sorry for the backlash rather than understand what they actually did wrong.
The whole thing was condescending. The guys made the apology sound like it was a problem with their marketing and their explanation. They "didn't explain it well" NO Ryan, We're not idiots, we understand where the money's going!
If you ever wanna see us again, you're gonna have to pay"
They don't want to let people go, so they're gonna let most of their fans go?
They don't want to struggle to find sponsors, so they want the fans that do stay to fund the whole thing?
They talk about luxury in their life, but want to start this when most of their fans can barely survive?
It's outrageous
