    Just found your channel like two days ago, and I really like it. I binge watched almost all (okay, a LOT of) your videos in those two days! I'm strange like that. When I find a great channel, I want gobble up as much as possible. Your channel came up as recommended after I watched a bunch of sharpening videos last week, so you can thank RUclips!
    Looking forward to new stuff, now I'm up to date.

    I live in Victor, New York and am semi-retired. Would be completely retired but love my hobbies which now includes knife sharpening, which also means knife buying. I'm the main cook in my house and appreciate all the tools which make preparing and cooking more enjoyable. Lately, I'm spending more time watching your videos than cooking. Thanks!

    Wow - another excellent way for you to improve on what's available!
    Please keep in mind that you DO give back to us - through your videos! Many of us will never be able to afford to buy some of the knives, etc. that you show us. So, we get to live vicariously through you. :-)

    I bought one of your rolled Buffalo leather strop, this is an outstanding strop made of the highest quality one of the best strops I have found and I have several of them. This strop was shipped from Hong kong and was at my house in 5 days. Your shipping is outstanding because you fly it to America and it gets here very fast. I am a very satisfied customer and will by from you again

    I just got my non-rolled buffalo strop & I'm thrilled. (Thank you, thank you, thank you Ryky) I use a 1000 then a 5000 stone so I'm not needing any compound on this strop. I've learned a lot from Ryky's channel and look forward each week to seeing new content.

    I was not sure that stropping on leather was really useful. But a month ago I bought Ryky's buffalo hide strop because they looked beautiful. Without stropping compound it makes and keeps cutting knife edge really smooth. Now I use them all the time. Thanks Ryky!

    Suggestion to make it more ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing is to:
    1. add oil coating on the wood except on the surface where you glue the leather or just sand it off.
    2. add some anti-slip rubber at the bottom.
    3. invest on a hot press stamp with your logo on it and sear it in it the wood.
    I hope your channel gain even more success than it already have this year

    I just want to mention that I received my Dalsrong Shogun Series 9.5" Chefs Knife Premium Collection. When I started with the unboxing I began to chuckle because of how excited you get during your unboxings. I don't get that way. So I took it out of the shipping box to see a very nice white slip cover box. nice got that off to find another box (white) that had a magnetic closure. Very nice. Now I was getting a little excited. I opened the box and holy shit. It is in a Saya that has a pin in it to keep the knife from falling out. I removed the knife to show it's Damascus V-10 blade. perfect in every way. The handle is a black like ebony with two SS pins and a decorative pin. very well polished and outstanding looking knife. Also included a pin, booklet on how to take care of the knife and what looks like a lens cloth. (possibly to clean your glasses from the tears of joy from this outstanding knife). I now understand why you get so excited. Thank you again for the discount.

    So I would say on the strops, those are very nice, and if you are going to use a strop without compound its' the way to go... if you use compound, the compound itself actually does the work, so you don't need really fancy leather, just something that will take compound. So cheap leather is fine for that. To me it makes no sense to put abrasives all over those really nice strops. Thats just crazy.

    When I do strop ,which is not every time as not every kind of blade benefits from it, I use a "power strop". This is a leather belt made for a belt sander. The speed and efficiency of this method is unparalleled.

    First off I just want to say I love your channel! Your tutorial vids really have been helping me practice free-hand sharpening
    I'm a prep cook so I use my knives for hours at a time and am interested in using a leather strop to touch up my blade at work between tasks, essentially like a less destructive honing rod. At the moment I primarily use high carbon stainless steel at work but was planning on getting into harder Japanese steel knives in the future.
    I'm leaning towards the Buffalo hide strops since they don't need a finish and therefore seem more convenient to take to and from work. Would you recommend the regular buffalo hide or the rolled?

    • @Burrfection
      @Burrfection  6 лет назад

      they all will work. the latigo is great if you plan to load, but "raw" is perfectly good. the buffalo is great because it's really glossy , so it does polish better raw, but it always cleans really easily for loading new compound

    Whats with the saw burns on the maple? Are those finished? Have they not been sanded? Whoever is making them should cut them large and bring them to finished size on a disc sander.

      ...not to criticize... I enjoy your channel and have found many of your videos informative. I just enjoy working with wood and it was the first thing I noticed. hard maple I generally find to be pretty stable, but it could probably benefit from some kind of finish; even just mineral oil. IDK for sure though.

    So whats the difference in using compound vs no compound? Does it matter which leather after you put compound on them aren't they all the same? How do you decide wether to use compound or not?

    • @dannybeeson5084
      @dannybeeson5084 6 лет назад +2

      Compound is a very fine abrasive suspended in a wax. Adding it to a strop increases it's ability to cut/polish. Tradeoff is the strop now can ONLY polish to the limit of the abrasive. Typically you have two strops. The first is charged with compound. Most common is the green. Once you've stropped on the compounded strop, clean the blade then use the clean strop (no compound). This gives you the best polished edge and is normally how straight razors are treated.

    • @Kman31ca
      @Kman31ca 6 лет назад +1

      For the best compound, Bark Rivers compound outshines them all. I sharpen up to a 6000 grit stone. Then I use Bark River diamond emulsion, its a fluid with extremely fine diamonds in it. I just rub it on the strop, and it gives an amazing shine, and edge. I Use the .5 micron. But Using a really high grade leather like these, you might not need compound. If I had one of these strops, I'd just finish on that. To each their own.

    • @frederikkjaer4170
      @frederikkjaer4170 6 лет назад

      douglas dietrich it is basically a wooden wheel attached to a motor that spins it fast. Normally compound is applied, and when you use it to polish your knives, it’s like stropping but super fast. Search for mdf wheel, one thing to note is that I heard that it is very dangerous, so don’t try it without lots of research

    First off sorry for my English, it's not my native language.
    I was wondering about all the cheap Whetstones on Amazon, Ebay etc.
    Im thinking about buying a Miyabi Birchwood 8inch Chef's knife. How many stones would you recommend for a knife like that?
    I see tons of whetstones as low as 10$ and it got some great reviews, so my question is why buy something like a 150$ whetstone when i can get it so much cheaper? Say like a 500/1000 Grit stone, 2000/5000 Grit Stone would that do it? I could get that for maybe 50$. (So basicly a very good Chef's Knife, and some cheap maintenance tools) Is this a bad idea?

    • @pureheroin9902
      @pureheroin9902 6 лет назад +1

      Herman Holgersen have you used stones before?
      If not then it won't make much, if any difference how much you spend imho.
      If you are a really good stone sharpener then high quality stones can give a more consistent quality.
      my experience with cheap stones is they don't create a slurry very easily if at all.
      If you are a beginner just buy a cheap stone for £15. If you want something better but still good value get the two sided "King Japanese Whetstone combination grit 1000/6000" for around £24.

    • @afrog2666
      @afrog2666 6 лет назад

      Your english is fine ;)
      And you don`t need too many stones, most people will be fine with 500/1000 & 2000/5000 stones, but the money you spend makes a difference, some stones are just smoother or more aggressive than others, depending on the material and binding etc, but I`d say get affordable stones first, practice on a cheaper knife (or several) then consider sharpening your more expensive knives on stones ;)
      but the harder the steel, the more you need to consider the stones you`re using.
      There`s always a steel, ceramic, or diamond honing rod to use on your chef knife if you don`t want to spend a lot on sharpening, but want to keep your knife in good working order, not as satisfying as a stone but it does the trick :)

    • @smokecrackhailsatan
      @smokecrackhailsatan 6 лет назад

      Nanocloth itself doesn't really have any abrasive properties. it's very thin so it's very hard against the backer, and it takes CBN or Diamond compounds very very well. They cut fast, and depending on which compound you're using, i find the 4 micron ones pretty much eliminate touchups until I have to go to the stones.

    So I notice on ETSY, you said that Buffalo Premium Leather does not need a stropping compound. Does this apply to the Rolled Buffalo Premium Leather too? Do you recommend not using a stropping compound or it does not really matter? Lastly is there one leather you recommend for just a quick strop before using each time?

    BTW you can really make this into a business if you grow a bigger channel and have more products you can make with wood and leather. Like a sink bridge I have some ideas because I made one myself haha. I want ryky to be the best stay at home dad and at the same time doing what he loves so much.
