as an australian, this is how i've always viewed it. if just australia is its own continent then that wouldn't make sense, plus it's already a country and an island regardless, meanwhile there's the pacific islands (nz, fiji, papua new guinea etc) that are close by that wouldn't be in a continent if this was the case. so case closed, oceania is a continent, not australia.
Yes i concur, it is Oceania, not Australia, my teacher is failing my class (besides me) because they all know nothing about Geography, and ny teacher is failing them saying its called AuStRaLiA! What the hell do you mean.
I can agree with the Oceania thing, I mean, that's what I was taught from what I remember. Although I'm not convinced that every piece of land needs to belong to a continent. I believe it's ok for an island to just be an island. P.S. New continent definition: anything as big as or bigger than Australia is a continent :D
Afro-eurasia is a continent then? Earth is a continent then? Jupiter is a continent? That definition might be worse. And also yes every single peice of land has to belong to a continent.
Sure, Afro-Eurasia can be a continent; why not? I realize now that I screwed up when I didn't specify land masses in my definition. My bad :/ New def: any landmass as big as or bigger than Australia is a continent And lastly, you still haven't explained why every land mass needs to belong to a continent. What's so wrong about St Helena not being a part of Africa, for instance?
@@park_makes_films_yo no. Afro-Eurasia cannot be a continent. Europe, Africa, and Asia are so incredibly culturally different it wouldn't make sense to group them together. And SECONDLY. Every peice of land must belong to a continent or what is the point of continents? They are designed to categorize countries based on location and culture. If i say "Saint Helena is part of Africa" you'll understand better roughly where it is. Continents are needed just as "Species" is needed. Or "Kingdom" everything must be categorised or it leads to confusion. "Where is Tonga?" "Oceania" as opposed to "Where is Tonga?" "South East of Fiji" "Ok, Where is Fiji?" "East of Vanuatu" "Ok, Where is Vanuatu?" "North of New Caledonia" "Ok, Where is New Caledonia?" "East of Australia" You see what I mean, continents are not an objective scientific thing, they were invented for ease of communication. That is why every peice of land must be part of a continent. Plus, the Olympics. You must be in one of the 5 Olympic continents to participate in the Olympics
All of my teacher's have said Australia is a continent, and I told one of them that Australia isn't a continent, it's a country. She then asked me what continent is Australia part of, and I told her Oceania. She just told me I was wrong and to keep my mouth shut. I hate when teacher's do this.
I never understood why people just say Australia when referring to Oceania, it’s like every time they treat it like all the other nations (mostly island nations) just don’t exist at all The type of person to buy a world map that doesn’t even have New Zealand in it
ok then Asia is called Russia, North America is called Canada, South America is called Brazil, Africa is called Libya, and Europe is called Russia also. I adress this argument in THIS video
Fun fact, Greenland is the largest singular island. Though it is not an independent country (Greenland is owned by Denmark). (Australia is more than one island.)
As an American, I been knew that it’s Oceania. But I still call it Australia. And still will if you don’t mind
@@CharlieSteak-b7w I very much mind. Call it what it's actually called.
What if I said no?

We call Australia a country and a continent because of the country that us Americans represent Oceania with.
The reason is that it’s the biggest island to see (other than Papua New Guinea and New Zealand)
Well I don't care what Americans think. They don't live here. Americans do not get to decide. We, the Oceanians, get to decide.
@@Milesprowerboy5 Papua New Guinea isn't an island. It's half of an island, the other half is owned by Indonesia
@ ok
@ yeah, I know.
YAY BRO IS BACK LES GO
Wait…people don’t know it isn’t a continent?? Crazy
Australia is a weird name for a continent even though it's a country. So I've pretty much always called it Oceania.
Fun Fact: There’s a Country inside of the USA located in Nevada Called Molossia
not an official country, but i have heard of it
ngl i just thought the islands was apart of australia
oh god
It actually makes sense Astralia is for the biggest Country in the region and Ocienania refers to all the pieces of land in THAT region.
