The defect is mine as Dr. Vervakee is a very smart and cultured person. But I can't extract utile conclusions to me from his words. At the end of it, in this interview and others, I can never get to a conclusion of what he thinks. Hans is very good. He did a great job as ever.
Agreed. The thing I first want to research after watching this video is how John Vervaeke could be focused on the worthy need for meaning and connection to spiritual truth, while being stuck in an aura of anger and New Yorky stressed anti-zen vibes ....
And that's the point...perhaps he has a tread with caution mindset to restrict himself into rabbit hole metaphysics i.e. a performative contradiction within himself. And that's OK...nothing right or wrong about it 😜
He uses a very academic style of thinking and talking, as well as overall presentation and it's not in a way where he tries to make himself sound "smart", rather it's just what he's really accustomed to. Also, another thing to note about him is that he doesn't have an answer per-say. He defines a problem, that is common but very complex as the problem itself is rooted in subjectivity. The answer to such a problem is also rooted in subjectivity and providing a unified solution is more of the same. I guess what I'm trying to say is, his method of thinking is agnostic when it comes to metaphysics. What he provides in simple terms is this - our knowledge of reality is epistemic, so everything we know, we know based on the assumptions we have within us and with no absolute certainty - we need spirituality and belief but the current world we live in provides either more epistemic assumptions under a scientific label or provides religious dogma which requires blind acceptance. Thus - in seeking spirituality we should read between the lines of what is provided to us and find the root of the spiritual truth born within our own subjectivity - i.e., find meaning in spirituality through our particular lens.

Yes, well Buddha said “If someone tells you something don’t just believe it but examine it and then only if it agrees with your deepest sense of reason should you believe it.”
30:21 In Shakespeare religion was always present in the background. Everything was about human moral and feeling of guilt, in the light of greed for power. The ghosts appearing to Macbeth of the people he ordered to be killed haunted him from the aspect of guilt. Reappearing as the memory he wanted to expel. The virtues have always been a prime aspect in religion. Although Shakespeare introduced a very human aspect into it. When one had failed to live up to them. Which of course happened all the time around him where he lived in.
The definition of religion is: that to which we are bound. We have cognitive reason to help us negotiate our way through life. Religious dogma, or precepts, help but they may not apply in every situation as every situation is different and requires it own unique response. At one time we may support a just war and at another time we may oppose an unjust war. So even though there are universal rights and wrongs they have to be applied to what is relative in a particular situation.
Kant didn't lock us into a worldview if we regard the Critique as purely Epistemological and NOT offering an Ontological account. Reason can go beyond the" bounds of sense" to create " Metaphysics" but this movement of Reason creates " parallogisms" of reason Contradictions, which then Hegel's ingenious move was to embrace these Contradictions as the essence of Reason's and Logic's modus operandi. So the " locked in" characterisation of the Newtonian/Lockean/ human worldview mentioned by Vervaake here can be seen as the " captivity of a picture of reality" brought about by THE DOMINATION of a certain style of Logic
I really don’t see why the question being asked in this video title is even necessary. The answer is an obvious “Yes” for me. I don’t understand why rationality and spirituality seem mutually exclusive to some people. I’m genuinely baffled
Ok! I just have an idea for John, perhaps you can help that idea to reach him... Videogames, popularity of Zombie killing games, i'm thinking particulary in the Resident Evil Saga (biohazards) and 3 things. 1. Its most recent rennaissance, 2. Its methodology to empower the player as you progress in the game, and the hook that this has on the player, the ability to overcome the 'zombie' mythos. you start weak and scared and as you progress you transform in an agent of change in that particular world 3. The ressonance of 'meaning' that has on a population of otherwise (sometimes) depressed players.
The professor 's path seems to be similar to mine but minus the western philosophy part .Western or Greek philosophy from the beginning was distancing itself from the spiritual realm and gradually considered it as an imaginary world or mythology. So that by the time we get to Hegel, God is no longer in the philosophical discourse because of our alienation .
I think John needs to play the last of us. There is an answer to the zombie apocalypse sort of an it is similar to the meaning crisis and the idea of sacrifice in that Ellie would sacrifice herself for the possibility of creating an antidote.
Love you John. And what a wonderful interview. I didn't know about this channel or you, Hans, but I think this exchange was exceptional in terms of clarity and the modeling of a beautiful companionship in the search of truth. Thanks for all your work and helping us understand reality more deeply!
You may have searched long enough to find religion but so did the Pharisees. They had all kinds of knowledge but they never got deep enough to know the heart of Christ. So, just like they were still stuck in the things of this world. You can't have eyes to see and ears to hear without a change of heart. That's why you keep searching for answers.
God and Consciousness are the same thing on different scales. God would be the consciousness of the universal field and you are the consciousness of your field, just like a microbe in your stomach is the Consciousness of its field. The microbe's relationship to you is the same as your relationship to God. That is to say you're definitely linked but you don't know each other's name. Consciousness is the boundary of a self-sustaining electromagnetic field, managing the differential between the internal state and the external world. Simple really.
I love all your work, specially B. Kastrup's, but I guess the fruit of it all is just - and it's a quite an objective - to give one's self permission to embrace a traditional organization (an orthodox religion).
Didn't Stanislav Groff & others discuss this some time ago? I don't think that the materialism of the western world is compatible with the discovery of meaning in life & this sounds like the description I developed when I was first told that I was a divergent thinker & struggling to find out what that meant!
The mind operates in a field of meaning derived from an observer and an object . The so called spiritual realms operate in Being or pure awareness / consciousness . there is no meaning crises unless one insists on Being as having meaning . meaning appears inside of that which is awake to itself without disturbing Being or disrupting the minds skills at dealing with meaning . both exist simultaneously . The meaning crises starts when the puny mind attempts to bring pure consciousness under its control. the solution to any perceived crises is to shift one's identity onto that which the mind appears inside of (Being) and maintain a small amount of individuality in order to operate safely and efficiently in the relative field
This title is for bloody beginners :D What a question. The historical Buddha gave an answer straight ahead in his teachings, 2500 years ago, the easiest aspect to understand, actually, yet still, some keep asking - or sell old knowledge as their newest spiritual hotshit.
Good question. We must be rational to approach spiritual. But not overly rational. A good sense of balance is needed. And . . . i don't mean physical balance. I mean an intellectual balance between (1) Reason and (2) Faith or Belief. In today's ultra - technology culture many have the idea there's no need whatsoever for faith. They are wrong.
Aslong as money exist people will always be materialistic due to how the system of survival is. I do believe inner awakening and reflection will help people be less materialistic over time and hopefully realise they will never have enough money no matter what so pursue love/friendship/family & happiness instead.
Not to be dismissive: but the entire history of Scholasticism was a generations long project which explored, refined, and archived these spiritual and rational matters -- culminating, by the way, in modern science (scientia ... knowledge) and the "crisis" of spiritual pertinence ever since. It is, in fact, an ongoing effort. We accept, or reject, at our own peril.
Can contradictions and paradoxes in non-zero dimensions (1D-4D) be resolvable from a 0D (dimensionless) perspective? This is a fascinating idea. From a 0D perspective, which we might think of as a dimensionless point or a monad (knower) in Leibnizian terms, we could potentially view higher-dimensional paradoxes as artifacts of our dimensional thinking. The dimensionless viewpoint might offer a way to see the underlying unity or simplicity behind seemingly contradictory higher-dimensional phenomena. For example, quantum entanglement paradoxes in 3D space might be resolved if we consider that from a 0D perspective, there's no separation between entangled particles. The apparent non-locality could be an illusion created by our "3D" viewpoint.
We are metaphysically ungrounded, and therefore unable to justify any ontological commitment. To this point metaphysics is the study of what grounds what(?). It is therefore an epistemological concern. This leads to trying to ground ourselves transcendentally. To seek out a transcendental connection. At best all I have been able to discern that this transcendental is actually an idealized and projected (from our psyche) version of reality. Once connected with it fails as much as the metaphysical grounding we seek, because we have only connected with our lack, that is the very reason we sought out the connection to begin with. The best we can have is a rooted experience in our day to day. One that is not provided by anything outside. But is only felt. This is existentialism. I would like to say existentialism on steroids. We must in some sense ignore this problem in order to continue. But I am only into the video for about 10 min. I will watch for a bit to see if you actually deal with the problem.
A few more minutes into this and I realize - never going to address the problem. At best and I don't think it completely fills the bill - the meaning of our lives is found not in a relationship with some 'higher" reality but with the relationship we have to each other. This is the closest I have found to answer the question of meaning. We can be meaningful to each other. That's it, that is all there is if there is anything.

OMG, it is Sunday and I just got on YT, and this was posted 59 seconds ago. Is it my higher self guiding me? Is it my destiny and fate to discover this now? Is there some cosmic order that brings me to the sources of knowledge, wisdom, and meaning at such a rapid and seemingly instant pace? Does it mean something? Is it synchronicity? Whoa, WHoa, WHOA - take it easy - don't overreact - Reconsider, and refrain from going down any useless metaphysical rabbit holes!
Expect miracles. We receive what is needed at the time because of being open to each moment as it unfolds. Serendipity occurs. The recognition of opportunity attracts us but we still must click on the button, open the window, see the doorway as an invitation and take the action to experience the moment. …. With discriminating wisdom of course.
A thin transcendence is only preoccupied with the here and now of tour individual life and community of adepts. A thick transcendence takes you beyond the here and now into eternity and its not subjective but objective in the sense that intends to speaks the truth to all of humanity not just for your meaning here and now.
Even if I do agree, the word objective here is unprovable because of the nature of cognition, in our current understanding, which depends largely on material objects, and the "beings" they make up. No matter how it feels or appears, a part of you is always in your body. The mind operates within (as well as arguably without) the body, the latter being exponentially harder to study and observe at this point. For now, let's acknowledge the component of subjectivity while still sharing our experiences?
The contemporaneous concept of the apocalyptic zombie was established in 1968 by film-maker George Romero. Every "zombie" movie since has simply been a different story told within the world Romero created.
Surely physicalism doesn't deny anything, just that it has to be physical? Materialism is a stillborn philosophy as space & time are also required for any material substance to exist.
i see some themes with zombies... close knit relationships, intentional communities, homesteading, and not making a lot of noise. lovecraft is also postmodern mythology.
Hi , The Apocalypse is not a myth. It started on the 11th of December 2019, closed the Popes calendar in the start of the Holy Biblical Apocalypse of Christ 1742 days ago. Cheers all the same you heavenly brother Charles Andrew Oyedele Ososami. Peace

I think lots of folks get meaning from sports- it is a new economic religion where we project idols and demons - how many hours a week do people get excited or disappointment like the bipolar nature of addictions.
28:45 The confusion is the empirical theory (test is proven by what you see proving the theory), never belonged to Newton. Nor Hume (18th century), as founder. But to Galileo (15th century, 300 years earlier). Who founded the scientific theory. Only through collaboration with Leibnitz, Newton came to his mathematical principle. Maybe he did not even realize where it was based on and believed it was some sort of cosmic Alchemy.
Some people are zombies they just go along with whatever they're told all you have to do is wake up , go and try to enjoy your life, be kind and loving
there has always been a meaning crisis, this is not a new thing, we don't know why we are here, we invented religion after religion and all sort of spiritual practices trying to make sense of it, but all of them are just inventions of our minds trying to seek meaning trying to make sense of everything, we don't know anything about the spiritual world, we barely know about the physical world, we don't know what all mean, we just attach ourself to beliefs that makes us feel confortable with our existence, but that doesn't mean those beliefs are truth, because absolutely no one knows what's beyond our little physical brains

Cognition! Exactly! My own and very innovative videos with my aproach are absolutely right! Thank you!
That certain style of logic is called Cartesian dualism brought to us by decarte.
A colab I did not expected🎉
I really don’t see why the question being asked in this video title is even necessary. The answer is an obvious “Yes” for me. I don’t understand why rationality and spirituality seem mutually exclusive to some people. I’m genuinely baffled
Ok! I just have an idea for John, perhaps you can help that idea to reach him...
Videogames, popularity of Zombie killing games, i'm thinking particulary in the Resident Evil Saga (biohazards) and 3 things.
1. Its most recent rennaissance,
2. Its methodology to empower the player as you progress in the game, and the hook that this has on the player, the ability to overcome the 'zombie' mythos. you start weak and scared and as you progress you transform in an agent of change in that particular world
1:34:30 John rapping through the meaning crisis
I found the underlying mechanism, Geometric Cognition if you want to come find me. Still working on main video.
Zombies aren't the only modern myth. Another is the superpowered mutant (Xmen, etc). Another is the planetary alien that will save/destroy humanity.
"Practices" with thin description with a strong transcendence is already existing. It's called mysticism. Or maybe introspection.
I love all your work, specially B. Kastrup's, but I guess the fruit of it all is just - and it's a quite an objective - to give one's self permission to embrace a traditional organization (an orthodox religion).
“A thin description with a big transcendence.”
The so called spiritual realms operate in Being or pure awareness /
consciousness . there is no meaning crises unless one insists on Being as having meaning .
meaning appears inside of that which is awake to itself without disturbing Being or disrupting the minds skills at dealing with meaning . both exist simultaneously .
The meaning crises starts when the puny mind attempts to bring pure consciousness under its control.
the solution to any perceived crises is to shift one's identity onto that which the mind appears inside of (Being) and maintain a small amount of individuality in order to operate safely and efficiently in the relative field
2 hours.
I did it and maybe I'll understand it if I do at nine more time
Why didn't I have this attention span when I was eighteen years old😭
This title is for bloody beginners :D What a question. The historical Buddha gave an answer straight ahead in his teachings, 2500 years ago, the easiest aspect to understand, actually, yet still, some keep asking - or sell old knowledge as their newest spiritual hotshit.
😂 you mean the LORD. Buddha is only 2500ish years old.
@@hypnaudiostream3574 up since Friday morning. My bad. Thanks for your awareness ;-) Confused them with Laotse
Just came here to comment on the clickbait thumbnail: John Vevaeke entire frame-work is metaphysical.
I wonder if JV calling himself a "cognitive scientist" isn't a type of clickbait in itself
And materialism is a metaphysical theory as well.
@@ericg3810 Yeah.
Different type of materialism!

Vervakaeke + Essentia?! Match made in...well right here on Earth
The apparent non-locality could be an illusion created by our "3D" viewpoint.
i think this a great discussion but holy cow yall need better thumbnail graphics and a more fitting title for this one
Sacred Metaphysics
It can be said that Bliss is like clapping with one hand as the other hand is holding a handful of water.
What documentary with Bernardo?

I would love to hear about cognitive tracking durning tai chi
Wow, Johns explanation of the zombie apocalypse hits my experience head-on.
@@janwag6856 Beautiful, well put! 💚🩵💛
Can we be rational and not spiritual?
The contemporaneous concept of the apocalyptic zombie was established in 1968 by film-maker George Romero. Every "zombie" movie since has simply been a different story told within the world Romero created.
Surely physicalism doesn't deny anything, just that it has to be physical? Materialism is a stillborn philosophy as space & time are also required for any material substance to exist.
1:53:46 What is John referring to here?
i see some themes with zombies... close knit relationships, intentional communities, homesteading, and not making a lot of noise.
lovecraft is also postmodern mythology.
holistic interconnectedness and possibilities
Hi , The Apocalypse is not a myth. It started on the 11th of December 2019, closed the Popes calendar in the start of the Holy Biblical Apocalypse of Christ 1742 days ago. Cheers all the same you heavenly brother Charles Andrew Oyedele Ososami. Peace

I’ve just found this channel, excellent interview, however the intro is far too long.
The thick description is the vedas, and the thin description is vedanta. Bhagavad gita is the infinitesimal.
That's why there is no real development in Indian Philosophy. We reach Consciousness too early.
Why does spirituality have to make strong sense or be logical? Doesn’t transcendence transcend language?
Yes, found in silence, words remove you from the actual experience- conceptuality is a nasty filter
I think Vervaeke is saying that there needs to be some sort of bridge between the transcendence and how you integrate it into your every day living
Much appreciated 🙌🏼 I enjoyed Bernardo and John’s talks @ TOE 💯
Wow, I discovered Vervaeke only weeks ago, to see him on Essentia now is fantastic! ❤
Nice logical thought... Be a shame if my first-hand experience was to trump it without reason
I don’t know if this is what he means but the Christian definition of faith is not asserting things without evidence. If anyone would like to know the definition you may ask I’ve been a Christian for a while and that is not how we would explain it.
John's two talks with Bernardo on the TOE channel were really great, his solo interviews on the same channel are amazing. I'd recommend them to anyone who hasn't seen them.
In those talks you surely have two, well three people engaging in "good faith dialogs" :-) ❤

3:28 I disagree. Religions a lot of times wanted you to be a zombie
“A lot of times” does not equal always.

there has always been a meaning crisis, this is not a new thing, we don't know why we are here, we invented religion after religion and all sort of spiritual practices trying to make sense of it, but all of them are just inventions of our minds trying to seek meaning trying to make sense of everything, we don't know anything about the spiritual world, we barely know about the physical world, we don't know what all mean, we just attach ourself to beliefs that makes us feel confortable with our existence, but that doesn't mean those beliefs are truth, because absolutely no one knows what's beyond our little physical brains
