  • Tom King's take on the most important female superhero it DC Comics, Wonder Woman #1 releases this week. Wes reviews Wonder Woman #1 from Tom King and Daniel Sampere. And while Wes is very impressed about certain aspects of the comic, there are many other pieces that fall apart under scrutiny. Like all of Tom King's work at DC Comics. He once again throws characterization, established lore and history out the window to fit his own personnel narrative. Leaving this a good comic book, but a terrible Wonder Woman story. Lets talk about Tom King's Wonder Woman #1.

19 dudes killed and the whole country loses its mind? This country has Gotham City in it and a gazillion of supervillains. 19 dead in a dive bar somewhere should be just another Thursday. By the way, the Wonder Woman I know would go after this woman with all her might. And of course that the villain is an old, rich, white guy. I'm sure it will be mentioned later that he's straight too, so there wouldn't be any doubts 🙄
If I were ever to find a genie in a bottle, my first wish would be for Tom King to never write mainstream comics ever again. I think that would be one of the most altruistic actions ever taken.

Tom King did say in an interview a couple of years ago, I think it was either during the first part of his run in Batman or during heroes in Crisis, that he uses his job as a writer as his therapy. And there lies the problem. Dude has a lot of issues and makes everyone messed up. Mr. Miracle, Batman, Heroes in Crisis, Strange Adventures, they all have this pattern and he is carrying it to Wonder Woman but will use "look how I'm a progressive guy" card to make people ignore his problematic writing.

all the men in this issue come across as completely misogynistic, except for Steve Trevor. The tone of the writing feels like an incel teenager complaining on a Reddit forum.

He does say that Sovereign is "merely one of" his titles, but then there's the bit about his hereditary lineage, so I don't know. Tom does love reintroducing old villains. Wonder Woman: Wrath of Mongul #1: Premise
Synopsis: While Diana visits Paradise Island once more. Hermes the messenger God gives her a parchment from Zeus telling her to find the lost power of Ares and bring it back to Olympus. Little does she know that the son of Amelia (One of the Amazons) has stolen it and gave it to Mongul II (Jr). While she was searching for Ares and where his power would be contained. She was abducted by Warworld and forced to fight to the death in a tournament setup by Mongul’s son: Mongul II. As the Amazonian princess looks around, she sees two things. The first is that Ares contained his power inside of one of his helmets. One of which Mongul is currently sporting. And the second is the blonde haired giant son of Amelia. A giant named Lanius, who seeks to prove his might to the Olympians and to honor his late father and his imprisoned species.

The big problem with writers like this who pander to the woke narrative of 'all men bad' is that those messages, drip by tainted drip, erode into the minds of people who can't rationalize that this is fantasy and not reality. The message of men being hateful and inherently bad is so overused that young boys are in crisis believing that they are bad people just because of the gender they were born into. Girls have essentially taken over all franchises with Star Wars being about Ahsoka and Sabine and Rey now and Star Trek being about every force-fed female character that Kurtzman can shoehorn in. Marvel is a girls club. Lord of the Rings is now the Galadriel show. It's hard for young boys to find role models in this landscape and when they do try to join in the current crop of books or movies they are treated like trash or worse. Wonder Woman used to be a great role model for everyone. Every hero and heroine had something special that people wanted to emulate and, by default, make them better people. I'm tired of these angry writers who make everything dark and sour. The world deserves better.

But I always say WW isn't a hero she's a warrior. Sitting on the side lines is the last thing she does and the reason why I love her. She doesn't worry about stuff like not killing badguys, the laws or rules like most heroes she just does what she thinks is right. So it's still ruining her in a way.
