Well, as for the Itoshi brothers, Sae had the ego but not the instinct. Rin had the instinct but not the ego. In the manga we’re Sae appears on the cover you can see his neck locked with a broken chain. We think that means he losing his goal to become the best striker when he began to live in Spain and changing his dreams to become the best midfielder.
yea you could see in his eyes how dead he wants when he said 'I am going to update my dream' imagine your dream is to be an engineer because that is cool and all that but then you realize you have attributes to be a doctor that would suck man .....(not disrespecting doctors degree here , just taking an example

this is what i think what sae thought in his mind. Sae realized that he couldn't be the best striker in the world. and then Rin is desperately chasing him, he feel that his brother souldn't chase after him. because he couldn't be the best striker in the world. if Rin chasing after him like that, then soon Rin too will not be able to be the best striker in the world. we can see that Sae said he will be the best midfielder and then Rin should be the best striker, but Rin cut off Sae mid line. Sae knew his brother should be able chasing the dream once he chase before. because you know? Luck is always on Rin side. Rin wanted to chase his brother who is aiming to be the best striker. but Sae know he can't be the best striker. that's why he ditched Rin so he can be the best striker without chasing after him who is aiming to be the best midfielder right now. truly, what an Itachi and Sasuke moment is this lmao
the thing about sae and people speculating him is that they assume someone specific had crushed his dreams, but really i’m sure it’s the fact that his play style and his acknowledgment of the potential he has in the midfield is what changed his dream.
Remember Luna blonde hair one of the big 5 that was in the 5v5 from season 1? He was at Royale's Academy and he knew Sae. And he was the striker for Royale's Academy club I think Luna and Sae had a fight for the striker position then Luna won and this is when Sae realized that he couldn't become the best striker. Luna even talked to Rin about Sae in the first season
But the thing is, Luna is an adult while Sae is a teenager who barely reaches high school aged at the time before he met rin again so it’s really strange for Sae and Luna fighting to be in the striker position when Luna already has his in the senior team and vice versa for Sae in the academy youth team. Unless Sae was the one who challenged Luba first, there’s zero reason for Luna to confront Sae when he should know the gap between adult and teenagers in football.

It was rins own fault. Sae came home clearly in a bad mental state but he still said he would play with rin and have sae be the best midfield and rin the best striker but rin decided to insult him and call him lame and not his brother

He only played football his entire life for that sole reason, and Sae just destroyed that. He didn't insult him, he was heartbroken, in despair.
It's insane to think that sae, the the absolute best player in japan says "there are more amazing people than me out there" so much more amazing that sae decided to change his entire dream itself
