You have to check out the Balkans!! Your money will go sooo much further, especially in Albania. Hostels can be around $10 with breakfast. Quick meals $1-3. Sit-down restaurants $5-10. Buses between cities $3-4 (Albanians are also super hospitable and hitchhiking is very common). I backpacked Europe for a few months and had the same financial dilemma with my plane ticket. I came back for family, but you should definitely extend your trip. I promise it's worth it. Depending on where you travel, it can be cheaper to backpack over there AND spend a thousand on a new plane ticket compared to gas/rent/food prices in America. Try to find the cheapest flight from anywhere in Europe back to the US and then book a budget airline/train/bus for the connection from your last destination.
I will take your word for it! I head out to Europe in 2 weeks for 6 months, I plan to stay with people through this site called Workaway to keep down expenses in the West then head out East
I wanna do so many places when I’m out of my apprenticeship next year. I can’t do proper backpacking this year so I’m going to take paid leave and go back to the Netherlands!
I have traveled to Europe many times. Always take an afternoon flight and take something to put you to sleep on the plane, my go to is tylenol PM. Wake up in a new country at like 9 am and hit the town. You will be good to go. I hit Paris last March at 9 am with a backpack and walked all over town.
