  • All right, this isn't REALLY the e-class, but its predecessor, the W123. I just like the E-class name.
    We have the chance to compare the development of technology and shapes from 1976 to 2017.
    Sitting into the W123 was another surprise, as you simply aren't used to car seats with such softness and bounciness. I felt like I sat down on my grandmother's comfortable sofa. On the other hand, the old seats won't really offer you much side support, which is much more important in the modern, more aggressive and sporty models.

    Those bouncy seats are the only seats that will let you drive many many miles without any kind of discomfort. I drove 1000 miles in one day in my W140 and I got out of the car like I haven't driven a mile. Modern seats are so focused on bolstering and "performance driving" they really kill your back on long journeys.

    OM616 and 617 engines were extremely durable understressed and simple design, with low power output. No common rail, EGR, turbo, catalyc converter and zero electronics. These engines will run with no battery or alternator. As long as you have compression, air and fuel they will run. Perfect car for the impending apocalypse.

      It's like there might be an occasional feel-good story on the television which mentions some old rover or Volvo which the elderly owner once went on a safari in and is now restoring or something, meanwhile there are probably numerous old W123's daily drivers in Africa which will never get mention.
      To be fair, I guess Beetle is probably the other most common elderly car nowadays, but old mercs have to last without such a massive aftermarket and fanboi community.

      I have a W123 -- 1983
      Gold, gold inside & the only issue at 236,000 miles --- the air conditioner & yes I live in Las Vegas. Other than general maintenance & rebuilt transmission it seems to run wonderful & have drove it all around western United States. I know you could drive it anywhere except maybe with a cranky air conditioner, that I finally gave up took all controls out & put in a series of small switches to make it work - not exactly stock but an amazing car that you have to drive to understand.

    Mercedes 123,with 240D engine should win a car of the century reward! In terms of build quality and durability ,this model is unbeatable. It was so well made that you didn' t have any doubt about travelling the world once you are inside. Engine could last even after 1.000.000.km. These were made to last. Also,it was amazingly comfortable. The new E class is of course uncomparable in terms of the design,because of the progress of car industry and everything. I have always been a faithful Mercedes fan. New models are very attractive and with modern engines, full of gadgets and electronics, modern technology,but also with more plastic parts than ever before. If I had to pick one of these two and go around the world trip, without thinking about any malfunction,it would be no doubt 123D. The new E class is more attractive than ever but not a single Merc will ever beat 123 class when it comes to durability. 123D, car of the century, if you ask me. 👍

It's true everybody cannot work with new E Class's complex electronics & technologies. But it's still a Mercedes. Mercedes has to move up and grow with technology too. Am I wrong ?

    If you put Amsoil in the engine, transmission, and differential it greatly reduces friction. I put a pvc y pipe and added another air inlet to the engine. The engine is a bit faster and it has reduced the smoke. I put in a set of Bosio Italian fuel injectors that the nozzle is slightly larger than the original nozzles and this also helps with the speed and power of the engine. I have the 20570r14 michelin tires which helps to slightly lower the rpms. You have to adjust the mechanical valves to keep the engine tuned up. It is no slouch on the freeway. I find during my morning commute that I beat most cars off the line unless it is a V8 engine. 3rd gear though has to much of a rpm range and the sporty cars will catch me. But for a 4 cylinder 2.4 liter naturally aspirated engine it does very well. And my 240d keeps right up with traffic.

      @w1zard0f0z 6 лет назад

      Totally agree. During my recent longer road-trip with my fairly recently acquired 240TD, only the more powerful modern German cars overtook me on the motorway!
      I'm amazed how much better it handles compared to the 200D I just reluctantly sold.

      No, no guy, I can bring you this old cars in the same condition under 5000€. I recently bought one in Lithuania for 3000€. In perfect condition, no rust and everything just works. It had only 330000kms on tachometer, but that could be double or triple. It doesn't matter. In Greece, Mercedes rewarded a taxi driver who has a 240d with 3 million Kms without the engine rebuild. They put him and his car in a Mercedes Benz magazine. They cost almost nothing to maintain and to keep in good condition

    • @449Raphael
      @449Raphael 5 лет назад +1

      Even if he did a full restauration. The new car after 2 or 3 years is only worth about 10000€. A full restauration is about the same. The old car only wins on value. The new one loses every year. There are millions of these mercedessen, they both are worth nothing at this moment. I can find young second hands between 10 and 15000€. The old ones between 500 and 5000€. But just, if you are looking for a car that brings you around the world without problems, you have to choose the old one. With the new one you just die somewhere in a desert, or in Siberia. It will not do the job...

      Best car, hands down, I have ever owned was a 1984 W123 300D turbodiesel. Still regret the day I sold it. I have a '91 W126 350SDL - it's close. I also have a 2007 E320 bluetec. I can tell you that both of the older cars are much more solidly built, and have a 'soul'. The 2007 might as well be a Toyota. It's fast, it's economical, and it's fairly comfortable. But it doesn't have the Mercedes 'feel'. Hands down, it is a much safer car than either the W123 or W126 - but it's definitely not the same build quality.

    By the way, your W123 model would not meet USA DOT standards. You don't have the mandatory 5MPH bumpers or the sealed beam headlights. However, the new E-class does not have them either, and would be acceptable to USA DOT.

  • @helder6175

    Even at the time 40+ years ago, the old car looked distinctive among the crowd. It may not have been fast/powerful, but the build quality is there and has proven itself in longevity over the years. The new car looks practically like every thing else out there. Remove the M-B logo and slap on a Mazda one instead and see how many folks wouldn't be able to tell. Granted the new M-B models are smoother, more powerful, and more fuel efficient, but with those plastic components under the hood, those cars will not last nearly as long... although maybe the E & S classes will last longer than the lower-end models.

  • @andrewkirk8278
    @andrewkirk8278 5 лет назад +1

    These are both excellent cars, and in some ways I don’t feel that you can compare them. I’d own either or both! There is indeed far less to go wrong with the older car but it was built in a time with less regulation, where more money could therefore be spent on quality issues, rather than what has become legal requirements which cuts into the build budget somewhat.

Newer models are best of sensors, auto transmission, automated parking, n the worst part is it won't last long! Simply put newer models are for kids!!
