I watched this last Friday. Yesterday (Sunday), I had a Christian station playing while my 9-year-old son and I put away laundry. The first song that came on was DC Talk's "Jesus Freak." As soon as the song started our conversation went about like this:
Him: "Why are we listening to this?"
    Me: "It's a Christian station..."
"It sounds like rock and roll."
"Some Christian music sounds like rock and roll..."
"Can we listen to something else?"
    "Sure."
And I changed it to a different Christian station. It was encouraging and eye-opening to see my son make that distinction at his age!

Wow , I want my son to be like that. When I was younger I used to listen to death and black metal LOL no distinction or discernment whatsoever and I was supposed to be a Christian hmmmm

The church I was going to become a member of told me that exact thing, " The worship music before and after service is specifically designed to get people ready for the spirit of god" Lowercase because of recent study in the new age movement "god"... Narrow is the path, and few will make it. Just as scripture teaches. Amen.

I watched this video at around the end of September of last year, and had it not been for my friend (Buddy) who sent it to me, I might have still been mingling in my musical dungeon of yore (i.e. trap metal/hip-hop beats). I presumed that since they didn’t have any lyrics for the most part, they were perfectly A-OK to listen to. Wrong was I! Yet because the Lord used Mr. Berdahl and Buddy in this mighty way, I have not listened to anything hip-hop for 9 months and trap metal beats for almost 10 (and counting!). Better yet, I eventually gave up most of other secular music (classical and similar genres excepted) and much of the contemporary Christian music out there as well. All this was by the grace of God, though. I could not have done it by myself. Today, I listen to classical and neo-classical music, along with certain Christian music. Praise be to God, our Lord Jesus Christ! ❤️🕊

Altough if you havn`t done some research in to occult influence in music, you probaly have no idea why this man thinks it`s such a big problem.
I have to confess i used to listen to all kinds of metal and death metal, always thought those satanic lyrics where stupid though, i had this silly idea i was neutral.
But that`s the point, you worship something you dont even know you`re worshipping.

I love all kinds of music but when it comes to worshiping God, I want hymns. Amazing Grace; Just As I am; etc. I also love classical music but not all of it but you really got me with sad songs. I do that all the time and is very much used to manipulate us in advertising. I used to think it didn't matter but about 6 months ago I stopped listening to these new CCM type and felt I should have felt guilty for no longer wanting to, esp. in church but I felt free. I listen to the older songs of hymns of praise. Sure, some make me cry but it is just so different. I no longer share or take part except in Dallas Holm's ministry. He is like no other.

Agree with many of his points which are really well made. I have issues with his trying to "control" peoples' opinion, by suggesting what's going on in people's minds, and making suggestive faces. Maybe to him something sounds one way. Maybe the 'sensual' sounding song sounds sensual to him because of what's going on in his mind! Perhaps someone else is thinking of Jesus. I understand the point he is making, but the disciples felt it was 'inappropriate' for a woman of ill-repute to be drying Jesus' feet with her hair, and he said 'leave her alone, there's something behind this that she understands that you don't !
Example, on the How Great Thou Art (last 10 minutes) who told him I was 'worshipful' on the first one? When it changed to the 3rd one , I felt there was more expression and belief; he's making faces, asking "are we worshipping? has the music pulled you from God? yeah" - really? Maybe it didn't. Some of the examples were not my thing and definitely not what I would use in a church

Interesting concept. This is very American based. I don't agree with a bunch of it because historically, it's just missing so much. The continent of Africa couldn't possibly have the exact same focus. Only European cultures historically don't use percussion/instrumentation in their music. Drumming is a language used just as words. Tribes used it to warn other tribes of danger. It's not all used to create sexual feelings. I mean prior to the European influence they had societies and none were exactly the same. Furthermore, other cultures have edifying music to God. Every last culture has something different. I get your point to an extent. Conceptually, you have put a bunch of American opinion in this. I have to say maybe you should research Messianic Jewish music. I do give you props for your focus on the music being to edify the Lord. That I completely agree with. Lucifer prior to his fall was made of all instruments. All kinds of instruments. Lucifer was created to worship the Lord. It wasn't the instruments that was the issue but his pride that led to his fall. I get the "purposeful" concept of it tho meaning what you present needs to have the purpose of honoring Him.
Worship and Praise music are very different. You seemed to focus on a worship concept like people in heaven only stand around and lift their hands to slow songs. God uses all kinds of music to attack the individual wherever they are. I can honestly say the How Great Thou Art presentation is an example of how God uses multiple styles to meet multiple people globally. You just can't put the God you serve into a box. The other styles are needed to reach those who would never listen to the initial style you presented. I guess I look at it like the versions of the Bible. The King James is a good translation but so are other versions. A person from Morocco wouldn't want to read that version simply because it's in a different language and might not be as edifying for them if they don't speak or know English and better yet "Elizabethan English." However, transcribed into their own language of Arabic, Berber, French, or Spanish would be much better suited for them to comprehend the text.
There is a style of gospel reggae. It's very different than the regular reggae. Christafari. Gospel Jazz. There was a big band orchestra called the Brentwood Jazz Orchestra. China has so many instruments no other CONTINENT uses. There is some amazing Chinese praise and worship music. You actually used the concept of polyrhythmic being negativein your presentation however, even in Western Classical, Baroque, and Renaissance music there were plenty of composers that used it in their arrangements. You just basically took all the music out of the Oratorio Handel's Messiah and said its not edifying to God because it uses polyrhythms. Comfort Ye My People is one of the best Arias ever.... In India Ibadan Karo uses percussion and polyrhythms however, it's culturally different. Just is. You can't say it's edifying themselves. I'm not even going to mention how many different cultures there are GLOBALLY in each of the continents I mentioned that are different except Jamaican Reggae. That's a common style of music in Ethiopia.
I will leave you with this. It might be good for you to travel globally to learn as you share your knowledge. American culture is clearly not the only one or the perfect one. Hence I agree with some of your comments and presentation. I can't imagine the only people who will worship our Father would sing songs in a way where there isn't any percussion, no horn arrangements, no instrumentation aside from a voice when He created worship to include all of that. I can tell you, my ear is way more connected to a variety of styles of worship than one. I can appreciate some of what you presented because I majored in music but culturally it wouldn't be appreciated by everyone as THEIR way of honoring the God you serve. He's the God they serve too.

It would disturb sales if the truth was to be preached. This sort of stuff sells a lot. I would challenge the presented to attempt to present this as a dissertation to a music faculty, and try and defend himself against some real music scholars. This sounds like an episode from Tarzan

A lot of slaves here in the comment section. You love your music so much, the thought of giving it up to grow closer to the Lord is unthinkable. I wonder if this seminar is now 24 hours long, because 2018 has some real garbage CCM. He could spend 12 hours on Jesus Culture and Hillsong alone

    • @theotherside70

Giving up music does not make you grow closer to the Lord. Growing closer is an activity within itself. Also, you have equated slavery with people having a mind of their own, rather than being told how to think. We are not under obligation to just accept everything that is being said, especially by someone who is not even a music scholar.

The demonstration at the end comparing the different versions of How Great Thou Art was pretty badly done. Of course you're going to create distractions when you keep switching versions, but that doesn't mean those distractions will be present if you just listened to one all the way through. And the fact that he kept talking through it was its own distraction, and it made it seem like he didn't have confidence in this own test, since he felt the need to tell the audience how they *should* feel about it.

Even though gonadotropins are a class of "sex" hormones, they do not have a function of increasing your libido (and making you promiscuous). They're for reproductive function, e.g. development/maturation of reproductive system, ovulation in females, sperm production in males, and the side effect of increased libido is only rarely seen in case of taking gonadotropins in HIGHLY concentrated forms, e.g. for weight loss. There is no way you will physiologically produce enough gonadotropins to make you act sexually irresponsible by listening a certain type of music.

No, I thought my sarcasm was obvious. Cory was saying that Mr. Berdahl was racist (obviously because he was mimicking some motions of rapping). So I was being sarcastic, saying Berdahl is racist against whites too, since he also impersonated white musicians. It's like Rush Limbaugh would impersonate the voice of Clinton during those years, then Bush for 8 years, and it's all fine. But when we get a black president and he impersonates Obama, he's racist for sounding black.

I'm not a 7th Day Adventist, but this all seemed very Biblical to me. The Bible tells us to get wisdom and understanding, so we have to be capable of doing that. I definitely don't think things we believe should contradict the Bible but I think it's okay to base our principles and reasoning on it, even in areas that have fewer numbers of direct references. As an example, maybe not the best: is it okay for a church to have air conditioning? I don't know of a specific verse dealing with that, but I do believe we can use Scripture, and Bible based reasoning, to conclude it is acceptable.. to me at least. That's my take on this, best explained in a RUclips comment, haha.

    • @theotherside70
      @theotherside70 7 лет назад

The answer to your question mach e is "no; this cannot be substantiated by a book he quoted very little from"; that's because the Bible talks about repetition (Isaiah 6), dance, timbrel (which were drums), and it also speaks of joy rather than this controlled, depressing, serious manner so called 'worship' is being portrayed here.

Well. I've been a listerner of heavy metal for 9 years (I'm not a fan of satanic lyrics) But I've never lost my faith in Jesus. My faith and love in Jesus is just still growing. Everyday I study the word of God en watching seminars. I love God and Jesus, I like to go to the church on sabbath and study with all the church members. I really love to do good works. And soon I'll going to be baptised. But will God really judge us because our taste of music??? I'm sorry to say this, but. if someone lose faith in Jesus because of music then the're maybe a little weak? But if avoiding pop/RnB/metal music helps you to keep in touch with Jesus then it's better for you of course!
    (Sorry for bad English)

It's great that you have faith in Jesus, but just because you have faith in Him, doesn't mean that you have to stop listening to metal. There's a lot of Christian metal bands out there. (Wolves at the Gate are my personal favorites), that utilize scripture-based lyrics with music that's just as heavy. Yet, it's melodic. Melodic christian metalcore. Anyway, they are good.

There is Christian Death Metal, Becoming the Archetype is one of them. There is Christian Rap, TobyMac, anyone? Christian porn? No. Porn and music are two totally different things. It's just another attempt at the radical conservative side of the church to brainwash people. It's sad, it's really sad.

What liberal feminist movement? That's the people who are for abortion and I'm against it after the first few days of pregnancy. I'm a gender equality supporter. I think women should get paid as much as men. As a libertarian, that's a position I can support. I also believe women should be ordained because there's no verse in the Bible that says otherwise. Most of it was simply cultural, or so I'm told, and since the culture has changed, there you go. I think I was told that the apostles didn't want the women of the day becoming like the pagan priestesses.

+Iris Voltmann The invitation to praise the Lord with "dancing" is based on a disputed translation of the Hebrew term machowl, rendered as "dancing" in Psalm 149:3 and as "dance" in Psalm 150:4. Some scholars believe that machowl is derived from chuwl, which means "to make an opening"--a possible allusion to a "pipe" instrument. In fact this is the marginal reading given by the King James Version. Psalm 149:3 states: "Let them praise his name in the dance" [or "with the pipe," KJV margin]. Similarly Psalm 150:4 reads: "Praise him with the timbrel and dance" [or "pipe," KJV margin]. The marginal reading of the KJV is supported by the context of both Psalm 149:3 and 150:4, where the term machowl occurs in the context of a list of instruments to be used for praising the Lord. Besides machowl, in Psalm 150 the list includes eight instruments: trumpet, psaltery, harp, timbrel, stringed instruments, organs, cymbals, clashing cymbals (KJV). Since the Psalmist is listing all the possible instruments to be used to praise the Lord, it is reasonable to assume that machowl also is a musical instrument, whatever its nature might be. David as the king was moving with the music celebrating having the ark. It was likely to be more of a call to celebrate its return. He didn't call anyone else to join him. As the king, it was appropriate that he should act out the joy of the nation.

Syncopation is what makes a melody or rhythm interesting, compared to the blandness of what he's talking about. No wonder christian music blows. He's just mad because he has no rhythm.

Honestly, especially in the African American church buildings, (I TOO AM AFRICAN AMERICAN SO DON’T COME FOR ME 😑😏), some of the so called church music is totally out of order smh. From the drum beats to the music in general; One can TWERK to some of it and even break out and party dance to some of it. Some of it is TOTALLY OUT OF ORDER! The sad part is many don’t think there’s anything wrong with it even quoting the scripture when King David dances out of his clothes hahaha. This teaching NEEDS to be seen, by ALL PASTORS AND ALL MUSIC DEPARTMENTS, IN EVERY CHURCH IN AMERICA STARTING WITH THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CHURCHES🤓

I totally agree. But WE ARE ALL A PART OF THE LAODICEAN CHURCH AGE. Our dedication and devotion to Christ makes Jesus want to throw up. Revelation 3:14-19 " 14 "To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: "The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Originator of God's creation says:
15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were cold or hot.
16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of My mouth.
17 Because you say, 'I'm rich; I have become wealthy, and need nothing,' and you don't know that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked,
18 I advise you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire so that you may be rich, and white clothes so that you may be dressed and your shameful nakedness not be exposed, and ointment to spread on your eyes so that you may see.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be committed and repent." Christians think "Yes... you... they are lukewarm. But not me. I'm on fire for Christ. Jesus is all I think about." There were 7 stages that the worldwide body of Christ would go through. They were prophecied by Christ and given to John in Revelation. If you are not willing to suffer and be killed for Christ you will go to hell. I say it like this, because many Christians actually believe the lie that "God doesn't want His children to suffer." If you believe this, and they want to kill you for being a Christian, you will deny Him. Jesus said in Matthew 10:33 "But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven,"

Sorry to be a pain in the neck here, but the cartoon song was never intended to be a serious song. Chris Rice was trying, in a very tongue-in-cheek way, to make a point that we should praise God on our own and not allow entertainment to do it for us. It is a novelty song. I see the point you were trying to make, but using that song will make CCM fans laugh at you. Note that I'm absolutely not a CCM fan, but a friend played that song for me, and I know the story behind it. I'm gathering that you were speaking to a group of Christians who agree with you, but if you do this bit in front of people who are into this music, they will be looking at you like the RCA dog.

I disagree with you (nice disagreement though :-) I can relate to it as a 'serious' song. Yes it is tongue in cheek, but it says a lot more: such as "everything with breath and life should praise", "this is God's world and we were created to praise - Jesus said it we don't, then the very stones would cry out", it pointed me to the need to turn a world which is so much about entertainment to use their energies and creativity to praise God. The bible talks about the trees clapping hands, mountains breaking forth into singing, stones crying out. If stones can cry out, why not ... Flintstones ??? ! ! !

I went to ASI in 2012 when they were in Cincinnati. (The entire time, all we had was vegan stuff, and I thought I disliked vegetarian Adventist cafeterias, I literally had to wait for Taco Bell afterwards) This guy was one of the speakers at my little youth group thingy and I got up and walked out on him. Because, what he says is complete nonsense! I listen to Christian metal and hard rock (not unintelligible growling, I hate that stuff), and those guys have more faith and they want to minister more than some Adventists I know! Bands like For Today, Wolves at the Gate, and others know how to reach people. Why? Because they minister to them where they can understand it. You can't just bring someone into church and expect them to fall in love with the piano and organ, (which, by the way, are two of my favorite instruments, and I am a drummer) No! We can't do that. We have to reach them where they are comfortable, and if that is through metal and rock, so be it! If that's through classical, so be it! (Heaven forbid) if it's through EDM, (Electronic Dance Music, for those who may not know) so be it! I figure as long as we reach people and we are kind and compassionate, then I think we are doing the right thing. The reason that we are looked down upon by others is because there are people in our church who uphold the entire writings of Ellen White as law more than the Bible. When I read scripture, in the book of Psalms, it tells me to praise Him with cymbals and drums and tambourines and dancing. Yeah, that's a big verse that, as a Christian drummer, I claim. I mean, if all we do is go to church each week, sing a couple of hymns, and listen to somebody talk for an hour about how we can improve our lives, what are we doing?
Now, before you think, oh this guy's saying things against Ellen White, and calling her a liar, no I'm not! I believe that she was divinely inspired. Now, do I believe that I am lost because I play the drums, which I used to play for myself, but now I play for Him? No! Of course not. Do I believe that, because I am not a vegetarian, that I'm a bad person or not following a law of God? No! Of course not. Do I believe that I am a sinner because I am a gigantic fan of competitive sports? No! Of course not. Am I perfect? Absolutely not! But, do I have to conform to ultra-super conservative rules before I am accepted as a member of the church? No, and I thank God for it! Honestly, the whole vegetarian thing, has gotten really old, and the arguments against drumming have gotten annoying. Some people in the church have gifts that God gave them but because of the "rules" they are repressed from showing them! I thank God that my parents are in the ministry, and they support me fully. It just makes me sad to see how pharisaical and judgmental some people in the church have become towards others in the church, with regards to how they dress, what they eat, what kind of music they listen to, etc, etc.

You are really stretching it with "Cartoons". It's not watering down the Gospel. Chris Rice is a youth pastor first and foremost and he just wrote a fun song for his youth. IT'S NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY! He even says this near the end of the song : Now, there's a point to this looney-tune
    I'm not an Anamaniac
But there's a lot of praisin' to do
And cartoons weren't made for that
    It's our God
    So, let's sing hallelujah!
If you are going to use an example of a certain song then play the entire song so that your listeners can hear the whole message or at least read the entire lyrics to them.
I disagree with you saying that Christian music is not for the world. Most artists will tell you that they are in it to reach the lost. Do you say music from artists like Rich Mullins, Keith Green and Steven Curtis Chapman are being used by the devil. If so you are going to be very surprised to see them in heaven. I believe you are going to be very surprised with a lot of these bands and artists you criticize are going to be there worshipping the same Lord together! I would be very careful with believing a lot of what Tony Campolo says. He's a very liberal Christian. In fact he was one of Obama's spiritual advisors. So be careful about quoting from him.

So what about rock songs that are 3/4? Does he consider that? CCM has a lot of songs with the 3/4 beat, so I'm wondering what he thinks about that. What about 6/8? 5/4??? His view in music is soooo rigid lol.
Also, if I can testify that I listen to a whole slew of music, from Hillsong to Heritage Singers, from Avalon to Audioslave, and though the religious songs have had an important role in my life as a Christian, the secular ones has not affected it.
Trust me, I watched his lonnngggg seminar and he didn't quote anything in the Bible specifically to just listen and sing classical or old hymns. In fact, Paul says to sing in all kinds of music, hymns, praise songs, and more. In fact, Paul even quoted poems that was attributed to Zeus, and turned it around to give the gentiles an idea of the one true God.
This guy and Ivor Myers, and anyone else who has a rigid view in music is what's wrong with SDA church these days. Turning culture norms into morality. Does he even know how syncopated ancient Israel music is? This guy says Hip Hop came out with a spirit of rebellion, and all that, when in reality, it came out from a DJ who wanted to just mouth lyrics from old songs to new background music. He doesn't even know the history or origins of types of music. I understand that some form of rock is dark, but to say that rock originated from the Devil is plain out wrong because it originated with African Gospel and Spirituals. Soooo...this guy should educate himself before preaching against things he doesn't even know about.

No thanks. Berdahl is toying with your mind, dude. He's just another pharisaical adventist who thinks that they are better than everyone else because they might be vegetarians, or come dressed in a suit and tie each Sabbath. Honestly, I love God, and I want that to be prevalent in the songs I play. I play everything, from Christian metal, to CCM. And, on the side, "Carry on Wayward son" by Kansas, which was covered by Stryper, a Christian group. And the group Kansas stopped playing secularly because some of them were Christians and they wanted to go a more Christian route, which I think is awesome. Berdahl and others like him, regardless of denomination, but I see it most in my church, are part of the reason that youth are leaving the church, because it's become nothing more than a set of dusty rules slapped in your face by somebody for an hour every week. There's no passion, no love, no hope. Frankly, it's boring. I can see that. Now, some people's response to this is to leave the church and become atheists, and I'm not about to do that. I'd much rather see the church reach out to people, then sit in a pew every week and focus on making themselves look good. I see it this way. Religion without love and passion is absolutely no good. Religion with that stuff wins people over. You can't tell people, "God loves you but only if you eat this way, or dress that way, or do this or do that."
Now, I'm not saying don't go to church each week, what I'm saying is that, in my 18-year old opinion, the church needs to be more inviting. And, yes, that means utilizing the drums in the worship service.

+Caleb Begley When I was 16 I bought my own drumset to make the music in church more lively and appealing to young people. I loved playing drums (and still do as a coordination practice)... and loved to make nice music with other fellow christians during some events and services (didn't do this kind of "youth style" music every sabbath though). Years down the road I had witnessed multitudes of young people of my age leaving church. Some of them shared the reasons for leaving on later discussions (yes, I am still in touch with them)... "boring" music was never mentioned as part of the reasons. The main reason that came up over and over again was that nobody seemed to be passionate about the faith...
At the age of 18 my opinion about Berdahl's lecture would have been similar to yours. After getting a graduate degree in multimedia sciences in music, I was forced to agree with him, as evidence was overwhelming (and it wasn't that somebody named Berdahl had said something, but all those studies and scientific data which I had to go through during my studies changed my opinion). I am not playing drums in church any more and when I happen to be at a service where somebody does, I can see its effect on people as I know now what to look for. As you can see, over the years my opinion has changed dramatically, and when I look at the bigger picture from my perspective, then I believe that drums doesn't improve the appeal of the service to young people; or actually it might in short term, but because of the effects of the music, the message seems to get lost in the process (more often than not). I agree, that church needs to be more inviting, more loving, but I haven't seen any positive correlation between those attributes and introducing drums to music during services (I have rather noticed the opposite).
I am not here to argue with you or anything, simply wanted to share my experience. I can see that you are worried because of the situation and you want to do something about it, and I support you in this, just don't discard information as rubbish if it doesn't fit to your current mindset, but rather study it out and make your decision then.
