tried to learn spanish over a year for my last holiday, got some basics down and everywhere i went they treated me badly for it and ignored my efforts even at the hotel. do they expec tus to be fluent before we even try?

I'm from Tenerife. We want tourists, we need tourist. But tourists that respect our land. When I do a travel, I like to feel welcome and grateful with local people where I go. It's the same situation. In the island we have problems that we have to solve with the hand of turism, of course! We need your help too!

I can understand warmer countries getting fed up with the "drink, dance, din and damage" holiday types constantly visiting them, but we're not all like that!
I think the Brits behaved very different in the 1890's than they do now. People have to remember they are ambassadors of their own countries and should uphold good behaviour when they go elsewhere.
Why would high quality tourists go there, they don't have anything apart from Bars and beaches. Tenerife would bore me after 2 days.
look at some you tube content how brits behave in there own country when they go out to clubs and are drunk...
I have experienced prejudice against British tourists in Tenerife about 10 years ago. I visited a very nice handbag shop, with a genuine interest in buying. When touching a bag I was shouted at and the shop owner professed not to understand English. Bizarrely, after a recession, I visited Tenerife again and went to the same shop where I was greeted warmly in English by the same man!
They can take some of our new arrivals if they want. According to lefties they are all high quality and enriching Britons.
British bacon, tea like mom makes, watneys bleedin red barrel. They turned it into little Britain what did they expect was going to happen.
When i was 22 and went to Magaluf with my 5 mates the last thing we were looking for was the culture. Everything was catered for young people, from clubs with young men and women trying to persuade you to go into the club they were promoting and get blind drunk, to restaurants selling full English breakfasts etc.
Go to Cornwall and let the Spanish get new, better tourists 👍🇬🇧

I agree as we have seen it for ourselves and their behaviour is a disgrace and embarrassing but on the other hand they spend their money every day and these locals take their money yes they misbehave but they are not the only ones plus they are on holiday as everyone knows Spain is the young ones destination so it works both ways
well i wont be going back until the food standards go up, far too many getting food poisoning over there. too many illegal immigrants everywhere under bridges and sleeping on streets. violent crime has sky rocketed aswell as muggings. even staff at the 5 star hotels are now rude. if they want a higher standard maybe fix your place first.

The old phrase, when in Rome do as the romans do, this can be implied in any part of the world, I went to tenerife on a stag weekend in 2019 and it was an excellent place there was no trouble ,

Tenerife has been happy to take money from Brits for many years though. If they didn't like it they should have banned them before and not took their money.
Besides, if a country promotes itself as being "spectacular beaches and nightlife" it'll get tourists wanting nothing more than to sleep on the beach all day and get drunk and shouting until the early hours. Youngsters of all nationalities do that, not just Brits.

I stopped going over there about 3 years ago the bed sheets were not changed the towels and we had cockroaches and it cost us £2000 to go there

British tourists expect things like food like they have in the UK, Prices like they have in he UK or cheaper, if more expensive, then they will complain. Many are rude, don't take responsibility for things hey should be responsible for, don't listen. It's fascinating but can be equally frustrating. Americans have their flawes like any other nation but they are not like this. French are French but they are not like this. Germans are not like this. Scandinavians are not like this. My countrymen I can't stand most of the time act like this too and people are complaining about them in Tenerife as well but those are mostly the older crowds, the young crowd isn't like that like it's the case with the UK.

The Brits are so needed in Spain. They spend more money, especially on coach excursions whether educational or fun, and also on merriment. Other nationalities do not do this. If the Brits avoid Spain then it increases Spanish unemployment. In the 60s when the UK had financial difficulties, Spain would devalue the peseta to keep Brits travelling.
There are problems, for instance Tenerife, which can be corrected if the locals housing was considered. Stop building hotels for a while.
Noise, young revellers, my suggestion is choose a quieter resort or choose a higher standard of hotel.
Tenerife needs tourism so do go. The problem is government management.
Ask the doctors and nurses who work at the hospital in Tenerife what they think of the British.

Tenerife does have a problem. I stay in Las Americas every year and the west coast is where the younger people are day and night. We have seen fights breaking out, chairs being thrown at each other. And in most cases it's Brits. Beer is cheap. But it's so weak and not the best quality. But at the same time. The local government are doing nothing about any problems like this. You don't see many police walking around the problem areas. The local people need to complain to their local government.

All most all the hotels in Tenerife were built by the Brits the economy depending on the Brit and as for as customs they have none, the south of Tenerife did not exist 50yare ago the people of the south of Tenerife are for the main land Spain and work in hospitality for a really bod wadge but that's not the fault of other who can bye home's and of course they are too take there home from the Brits cheap because Britain is not part of the European Union and it's just the British not the Germans because they do the same drink a lot but that's just fine it's for the economy

If I were a local in Tenerife I would feel the same. A few people benefit money-wise but the majority do not.

The working class guy who worked his butt off skimming the walls on your property (which was likely purchased with a deposit from your parents or grandparents) I consider to be way more classy than most middle-upper class people as he paid for his vacation with his own money, not trust fund money. Independence is way more classy than faking success.
I looked online and you can travel there for £325 per person which includes a 4 star hotel and flight.

There is a well known saying "Brits abroad", this is what they want to stamp out. They don´t want zero tourism, they want better tourism. They want to stamp out the belief tourists own the place.
Then Tenerife should their country according to their requirements. With adverts such as "spectacular beaches and nightlife" and "clubs opening at 10pm and stays open until 4-6am" they'll get what they ask for. It's their own fault.
