  • I had a request recently for a video examining the Shetland guitar style of Tich Richardson who famously played with Boys Of The Lough. Tich tragically died in a car crash in 1984, so his characteristic guitar style is not widely known, but from the few surviving recordings of his playing we can see a hugely creative and versatile player who melded the classic "Shetland" bum-chak style with forrays into fingerstyle, altered tunings and countless creative, jazzy chord voicings. In this video I examine one fantastic clip of Tich playing with Boys Of The Lough fiddle player Aly Bain. The full clip can be viewed here:

Just stumbled on this...Tich lived next door to my family in Croxdale Co.Durham UK and may still have a guitar book he gave to my Brother ...great to see his memory is being preserved.

Great to see Tich's memory preserved and his style analysed and explained so well. I knew him back in the mid 70s and he was a funny and warm human being. So sad that he died young.

Thank you for your kind words- I really enjoyed watching clips of Tich playing when I was researching this video and I hope that it'll help keep his unique style alive :)

That was super interesting. Great chord runs. Would make an excellent addition to your play alongs on your Web site. Play alongs that are in unusual styles....
You give out so much free stuff it doesn't seem fair. If you had a Patreon additional site where you posted such things, I'd sign up straight away to support you.
Great video, loads of work producing it and best stuff on the Internet or from fee paying sites by far.

I've actually just hit RUclips monetisation so will now make some money through that! I might have a think about Patreon down the line but I'd rather feel like I've produced books and products which people are happy to pay for and make the videos to advertise them. That being said the channel takes up a lot of time which I should really be writing more books with haha.

I think the majority of Django jazz players also use very thick plectrums as it gives a thicker sound.

Interesting point, you're probably right. I had a go with them myself for a while but I found them a bit clicky!

Yep I struggled to get on with the really thick pic's but then I never quite got the sound either.
