Thank you Eric for your honesty about the 1 3/4” headers ... my comment about them was meant with no disrespect ... I think what you’re doing with this is great ... I’m going to send $100 to test the cam I sent... with this challenge ... keep up the good work ! May the best cam specs win... no matter who specced it
I like Chris Straub and Billy. I think it's good they do a cam along with Howard's. I'm a Bullet and Comp Cam guy, but I see Powell Machine on here and it would be interesting if he jumped on since he's on youtube and does custom ground cams in house.
Love Howard's, most people don't know they will make you any cam you want...I have found one close had them alter the LSA THEN instead of a Sadi core had em grind it on a billet core so that I could run Morel axle oiled solid lifters with WAY more than hyd roller spring pressure not quite solid roller, zero lash cold grew to 6 at temp whisper quite and pulled to 7600 w a F1A-94 centri...never nosed over almost zero maintence...last for years driving the hell out of it and into races well above 1000hp....always 7000+....every single other combination from EZ roll lifters to llsr failed...every hyd rolled over and either ticked cold or hot take your pick your not getting both...ALL the big companies ALL the big lifters, every preload, every spring combination... Nope non sadi core hyd roller profile on billet core, widened a lsa from their shelf cam a bit and put eniufj spring in it to control tje valves for rpm ( and boost) not enough to delaminate the rollers or kill the axles...( cause i for REAL drove it )...chefs kiss!!!!!
Your doing this the right way. When people call a cam company and ask them for a cam they get the info about the build, purple are often stuck with the header size they have already, things may not be perfect combo wise but when they call to order a cam they have what they have and it's the cam guys job to pick the best cam for that customers combo period. If you call a cam guy get to get a cam for a FAST class engine the cam guy don't decline to sell you a cam because you don't like his carb or exhaust, it is what it is and you pick the best cam for it you can.
I feel the specs you've given and standards for the test are spot on for someone who's getting a cam custom ground so if Howard's has balls let them hang along with evey cam guru around
I think it's funny the popular ls cam companies like btr, gpi, tsp, summit, all haven't emailed you. This contest will be a great way to take the more popular cam sells spot for ls engines. Very excited to see what struab sends in along with howards cams!
One thing to remember. If I would send a cam (which i almost certainly will not, because the whole shipping and back to germany for a cam I do not need is too ridiculous); i would mainly go for the highest average, becuse the highest average torque is also the highest average horsepower, if measured in the same rev range.
Once there's a certain level of experience people will usually be inclined to feel they know what it's all about and that's been as true with cars as with anything else. I hope what comes from this above all is a reconciliation and less inclination to negatively judge others who enjoy the same.
The new dyno Mule motor sounds great. I think you are going to have fun with that. Nice job porting the AFR Enforcer exhaust ports. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend. 👍
Hey Eric, Tim here, WATCH, Vizards cam will have a tight LSA.....i dunno what Howards will do, but Howards has been impressive for a few years now....i build Engines yes, but my buddy works for a guy, and they use Howards kinda exclusivly!!.....i will stay glued to the vids....GREAT stuff!!!.....LOVE IT!!!😅
Diabolical work and I'm loving every second of it, was wondering how you would handle the "Price is Right" bs but this video shows just how much thought you put into this stuff and it's awesome 😂
Awesome contest. I can't wait. Will buy a cam from what i see , of course if available from a manufacturer. Secret wining cams go in race cars. 2nd best is good for the street 👌.
Heck ya , Old man’s Garage is my favorite channel to watch along with SRC and Gen2 . I hope isky sends a cam in for the competition . Looking forward to seeing results . I’m no expert , just another guy with a SBC .
I havent been seeing your videos pop up or am i being notified i didnt unsubscrib. Cant wait to see the power this 421 makes. The 42q that Bill from omg has in his malibu is anice piece a lil more compression then i would wan but he can drive that car. Anywhere and its a 9 second car on spray
Why not have the RPM range for the average power under the curve be extended 1000RPM lower (3000-7000)???…..I’m not being critical, just suggesting that more people may be interested to see how the engine performs near / below the TC flash speed, if they were considering a combo similar to this for street / strip use. You should definitely make a post with this competition on “speed-talk,” I bet you’d get at least one more competition entry from there, given you already post there.
Would you consider starting the pulls at 3K even if the average only counts 4K-7K RPM for this competition, so people can see what the cams do at that speed?
What's the tensile strength of the intake valve at 163° in 87.5 % humidity? Don't know well sorry then I was gonna win but that information figuring the lobe differential slope percentage ramp velocity is impossible. It makes all the difference in the world and a world class cam designer like myself will not take a chance my cam grind being off and not performing at 112.3%, your loss.

What you said about bottoming out the lifter with longer pushrods; is setting up the .020 to .060 lifter preload really that critical? It sounds like it isn’t… Is it just important to have at least minimum (.020”?) pre-load, but maximum preload is quite open?
I don’t really like that the cam specs will be shared but being that they will be shared we all will learn something from this! This is super cool Eric!!
The only ones tho are the ones that really don't matter. @.050 @ lift and lsa. Numbers from .050 to .200 and the rest are the ones that matter. .660 lift is the kicker and hyd roller.
@@shelbyavant5081 oh my bad I missed that, I thought it was to get the most powerful cam. Because I’m sending in a cam and from my end I thought it would be cool for people to guess the specs of the cams before they were shown that’s all.

How much does it cost to get the cam doctor info? It would be interesting to see some of the different lobe profiles. I'm curious on the effects of a slow opening exhaust vs. fast opening exhaust lobe. I'm running a fairly fast opening exhaust lobe, and it's hard on the valve train.
For the record I’m only using the cam doctor to confirm cam card specs. I will not be giving out the full details of their lobe design. You will get duration at. 0.050 lsa and lift. The cam guys get to keep their secret recipe.
I don't think the results will be fair with one timing, different cams will make peak horsepower at different timing. You could at least make three pulls 28°,32°,36°
