We actually went the other way...we are using a lower seed rate than we used to...better stalks, no lodging, no burnt out spots in the hills in a dry season and 180-220 on the hills on a wet year...why would I plant at 40k and expect 0 bu an acre on a dry July or August...all those extra seeds are then weeds...this is corn gardening at a macro level...congrats on your plot results...love seeing 300bu on any field. Especially on a field where the inputs are half or a third used here...
Check out this ultra high pop 60 inch corn. with diverse cover crop in between. R Educed weed pressure, reduced evaporation, increased water infiltration reduction in fungus, and reduced run off. Fall seasonal grazing, and increased beneficial insects, and soil life.
Try landrace breeding. Mix em' all up. Plant multiple configurations for separate landraces based on each spacing. Treat them exactly as the farmers are expected to treat them. Weigh the individual stalk for yield by weight. Remove the stalks with the lowest yields from the population. Plant again for a few years repeating this.
