  • The Untouchables is an American crime drama that ran from 1959 to 1963 on ABC. Based on the memoir of the same name by Eliot Ness and Oscar Fraley, it fictionalized the experiences of Eliot Ness, a real-life Prohibition agent, as he fought crime in Chicago during the 1930s with the help of a special team of agents handpicked for their courage and incorruptibility, nicknamed the Untouchables. It was remade into a 1987 film by Brian De Palma also called The Untouchables, with a script by David Mamet, and a 1993 TV series.
The stories often revolved around Ness' enmity with the criminal empire of Chicago mob boss Al Capone, and many focused on crimes related to Prohibition. The show stars Robert Stack as Eliot Ness and was narrated by Walter Winchell. Neville Brand played Al Capone in The Desilu Playhouse episodes, and in a few episodes of the regular series.

The stirring music and Walter Winchell's narration voice is so uniquely distinctive, and the show's format, make this a truly an American classic. The acting had a believable element for it's time in advance of other crime shows, especially Robert Stack's no nonsense, steely eyed portrayal of Elliot Ness. I worked for a person that was personal friends with Oscar Fraley and I had a chance to meet him on one occasion.

I never missed this show. My dad was on the Detroit Organized Crime Strike Force, the next generation after Ness. The FBI, ATF etc shot a lot of the street punks, but my dad took out all the leaders of the two families, the Giacalones and the Genoveses for not paying their taxes, since he was the IRS guy. My whole family of 4 siblings were followed to their schools by the FBI. I liked the abridged theme song of the show better than this, although the extended version is more creative.

Despite Hollywood portrayals of Ness as the ultimate shoot-first-and-ask-questions-later lawman, the real Ness displayed a lifelong aversion to firearms and considered the gangsters who used them to be cowards. Ness carried a gun only when absolutely necessary and was known to wear an empty shoulder holster on duty.He got Capone for “income tax evasion”!

Depalma had a different view of Elliot Ness, a sort of stumbling kid that needed the help of an old Irish cop , the real hero of his movie. Everyone who hears this original score by Nelson Riddle remembers the facts and the hardcore expose by Desi Arnez of the mafia and their collaborators.Depalma tries to destroy the image that desilu studio's so honestly built up. Depalma's train station shot out with the baby carriage on the staircase is only one example of the fraud of Depalma's film.

Brian DePalma admitted he wasn't a fan of the Desilu version. My guess is that the bad guys were all of Italian descent like Mr.DePalma.Lest you forget Desi got in hot water over this & had to make changes on the way Italians were portrayed. That almost bought him a hit contract from Sam Giancana later cancelled.
