This band has a very cool back story. The founding core members of the band were George Cummings, Ray Sawyer, and Billy Francis who had worked in a previous band called "The Chocolate Papers;" Cummings, Sawyer, and Francis started a new band and included lead singer and primary vocalist Dennis Locorriere, who was initially a bass player. They named their new band Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show: Tonic For the Soul. The name was inspired by Sawyer's eye patch and as reference to "Captain Hook" of the "Peter Pan" fairy tale. Sawyer lost his right eye in a near-fatal car crash in 1967. And thereafter wore an eyepatch, leading some people to believe he was "Dr. Hook" but when asked by fans, which band member was Dr. Hook, they would all point to the bus driver. 😆 Some of their songs were considered somewhat audacious and brazen. But I think they are funny and amusing. It's all in the eye of the beholder (IMO) Here's another live performance of one of their songs that demonstrates this "Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show - Sharing The Night Together - (1978)" I really enjoyed your reaction, thanx 4 sharing 🎶
Great reaction. For me, one of the most brutal aspects of this song is the fact that her mother tells Sylvia to remember her umbrella -- meaning Sylvia was right next to Mom and (I assume) did not know who Mom was chatting with ("Sir, won't you call back again...").
He actually called Sylvia, but Sylvia's mother answered the phone. That's back before cell phones when there was usually just one or two phones in the house. This is based on actual events. You can find an interview with Mrs. Avery about it on youtube. Her version of the call is a little different. It's amazing how perspective forms your perception of events.
Shel Silverstein wrote this song, as he wrote all the song sung by this group. This song is a true story, he is relating his pain. Somewhere on RUclips is am interview with Sylvia, telling the story from her side.
Silverstein wrote the song for them based on one of his life experiences. I’ve always loved Dr. Hook and the Medicine Band! I’ve always thought with Silvia’s mother telling him that’s she’s leaving and on what train that if he really wanted to he could go to her. So was Silvia’s mother trying to get them back together? She did say he could call again.
I've always thought the mother was trying to keep them apart. When she says, "please don't say nothing to make her start crying and stay," she indicates she knows full well Sylvia still has a thing for him and could easily just dump the guy she's about to marry. And then at the end she says, "Thank you for calling and, sir, won't you call back again" it sounds as though she's trying to keep Sylvia from knowing who's on the phone, by making it sound like she's trying to politely blow off some unsolicited caller. She surely knows his name so why is she calling him "sir"? Sylvia wasn't within earshot for the first part of the conversation.
I always felt that everything the mother was saying was to persuade him to give up. " she's busy, she's packing, she's leaving, getting married, starting a new life,..." I doubt that she is getting married so soon after their nreakup.
Not sure if you are old enough to remember these pay phones. If the operator kept asking for money it meant it was a long distance call. Local calls did not have a time limit. So, he is apparently too far away to make it to the station (nice catch though). BTW Shel Silverstein was a global traveler so I am reasonably confident he was not nearby when he made this call.
@@arizonasundevil5128..we don't know the location of either party or the location of the train station. He could have been closer to the train station than she was. Distances of what determines a local phone call varies...
I'm with you on this one. Sylvia's mother was giving the guy way too much information. It took me several times listening to the song to finally figure out what was really going on, and it made me smile. Sylvia's mother was pretty tricky and apparently also tricked the vast number of people who have listened to the song...
My take on this song is that Mrs Avery is interfering in her daughter's life.Perhaps he wanted to apologize for hurting Slyvia or could be Sylvia's mother is to blame for the break-up
The angst in his voice is beautiful!
Beautiful. A great hit. Part of the soundtrack of my teenage years. Love it. 70s music is awesome.

Thank you for this! This was a fantastic read :D
Yeah, Sylvia's mother isn't havin nothing of that 😂😂😂
The reason why you can feel his emotions is because it really happened the song is and him trying to rekindle a broken relationship with Sylvia
Untrue
"Sylvia's Mother" is autobiographical, with songwriter Shel Silverstein drawing upon his unsuccessful attempt to revive a failed relationship.
