I don't think any serious theologians are fighting over the (small "o") orthodoxy of the doc. As conservative people calm down and read the actual doc, it is nothing to schism about. However, there are some serious dissident Catholics who want gay "marriage" and won't be happy until they get it. This letter makes clear the ancient faith hasn't changed. That's all any church council could really say. I'm afraid those who will break away will simply switch to whatever version of Protestant they feel most at home in. No real schism is necessary, nor a council that could prevent it.

I am glad that our brothers in the East are setting a line in the sand about this, with uttermost respect for the authority and canon law of the Catholic Church as a whole, and I think they did what they ought to do. This being said, I am Spanish, and I am a Roman Catholic, my language comes from Latin, members of the latin church defended and shaped my country through the ages. Some say that the conversion of king Reccared to Catholicism was the birth of my nation, and all this confusion will not, under any circumstance, make me go outside of it. If I go to anothe catholic church I may end in heaven anyway (God will it), but while I'm on earth I will fight to remain in the church that I feel is rooted in the same soil that I was born, raised and in which I want to die.

I am a Ugandan Catholic and I tell you all this is a lie by the main stream media or youtubers who don't want to read the official document of Pope Francis. We are all sinners and need God's blessings, so if any sinners of which all of us are, go to a Priest asking to bless them, such blessings are not aimed at approving our sinfulness but rather to help us to live a life that reflects God's commandments. Also the document states" When a blessing is invoked on certain human relationships” through a special liturgical rite, the Declaration notes, “it is necessary that what is blessed corresponds with God’s designs written in creation” . Therefore, the Church does not have the power to impart a liturgical(marriage) blessing on irregular or same-sex couples." Also it states;" the doctrine regarding marriage does not change, and the blessing does not signify approval of the union." and ” It is reiterated that according to the “perennial Catholic doctrine” only sexual relations between a man and a woman in the context of marriage are considered lawful. The third part of the Declaration (paragraphs 31-41) opens then to the possibility of these blessings that represent a sign for those who “recognizing themselves to be destitute and in need of his help-do not claim a legitimation of their own status, but who beg that all that is true, good, and humanly valid in their lives and their relationships be enriched, healed, and elevated by the presence of the Holy Spirit” (par. 31). Here is the link to official document : www.vaticannews.va/en/vatican-city/news/2023-12/fiducia-supplicans-doctrine-faith-blessing-irregular-couples.html. please read and don't believe the main stream media or some youtubers' lies. It was smart for them to word it the way they did because they’re trying to find a way to oppose it without Rome having a way to enforce it on them. If Rome tries to then the UGCC will complain that’s a Latinization on their understanding of blessings. If you know anything about Ukrainian culture you know it’s very traditional on the whole with family moral values and there is no way they’d approve of something like F.S. culturally speaking. In their culture, it’d be scandalous to publicly bless a SSA couple in a church. The document can say whatever but the praxis is what they care about and it’s the praxis in F.S. they are saying isn’t compatible with Eastern tradition. Thats because they still have traditional and cultural influence from their former Orthodox past in their church, whereas Rome is clearly doing this to appear more “inclusive” and placate a modern, progressive Western audience

Seems like thier is a difference between both rites on the meaning of blessing. Latin rite allows for spontaneous blessing I.e. Someone goes to the priest outside of the mass/liturgy or sacraments and ask for blessings for themselves, family, friends, sacramentals etc. The priest typically don't ask if you have gone to confession before they give blessings, they are blessing the individual and not thier intentions. Then their is a liturgical blessing given during mass or in connection with some sacrament. The document is addressing those kind of spontaneous blessing. Marriage is a sacraments and administered usually during mass or some kind of liturgy. The blessing in the marriage liturgy is given to both the individual and the union. Blessings given to two homosexuals just like 5 heterosexual is not in anyway a liturgical blessing as it is not connected to sacraments of marriage.

The last sentence from this statement, “The blessing of the Lord be upon you”. That wasn’t liturgical, was it? And it’s not condoning the readers reading this document of their actions, or their way of life. It seems like it’s a simple phase that’s meant to imparts God’s love to another. In paragraph 5 of the Fiducia Supplicans it specifically states the Catholic Church cannot bless same sex couples. I think everyone is just confused and misinterpreting what it means to be blessed.
    5. This is also the understanding of marriage that is offered by the Gospel. For this reason, when it comes to blessings, the Church has the right and the duty to avoid any rite that might contradict this conviction or lead to confusion. Such is also the meaning of the Responsum of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which states that the Church does not have the power to impart blessings on unions of persons of the same sex.

Your assessment is right, many people don't understand that the whole point of the document is to establish limitations rather than the opposite. I mean, it's super obviously dishonest how the media has reported on it, considering the document repeats multiple times that irregular unions cannot be blessed. But at the same time, I think some of the approach is overly charitable and the lack of direct language regarding repentance and the intrinsic evil of such unions has opened the door to grave misunderstandings.

I have read the document in full, in quiet. Section III .31 says that there is now a blessing for irregular (adulterous ) couples and a blessing for same sex couples in a relationship. There is no call to repentance or hope for the individual. The document pretty much states you can bless disordered unions in anywhere but Mass. IMO, it is the first step in normalizing sexual disorders in the Holy Church.

I've just read it. It's very clear that this is a spontaneous blessing of people, outside of the liturgy, outside of any ritual and without any formality or connection to civil unions. It is a pastoral and private blessing. I can't see that being contrary to Christ. I volunteer in hospital chaplaincy. When you are in a pastoral role - up close to human experience and suffering the intellectual arguments tend to fall away and we become Christ for the other. This is how I see this document. For me it's important to distinguish between blessing and sacrament.

It is confusing. It explicitly reaffirms church teaching on marriage. However, it seems to reduce homosexual relationships from intrinsically disordered to irregular which is terrible phrasing. Irregular unions can be regularized. Sodomy can’t be regularized. Additionally they are called “couples” but they are not based on traditional Catholic anthropology.
The other confusing part is you can bless their “humanly valid… relationships…” Nobody clearly knows what that means. This is article 31 and where most confusion resides. Trads are concerned “relationships” in context is the sodomite’s diabolical relationship. That can’t be blessed. Others are saying that isn’t what it means. The Pope hasn’t clarified.

@dansteele8855 The document provides a means for blessing those in mortal sexual sin, but not a path forward for the individual. The Church already provides the remedy for those individuals entangled in habitual mortal sin, but never in our history has the Church ever bestowed a blessing people as a group whose only relation is a sinful act. The fact that we are having this debate is evidence of how this document was designed to seed confusion within the Church.

Despite any doctrine and belief practices, our church serves as a bridge to Christ despite changes to cultures and science. Like a giant boat that doesn't sink. We're still brothers and sisters in Christ, and we shall know the merits of our churches by the fruit it brings. For lay Protestants, Sacraments adapted to them are still fruitful. Praying directly to God under the Sacrament of Reconciliation with a repentant heart, the Sacrament of Marriage to practice unconditional love as it's practiced in Heaven, Anointing of the Sick, and Confirmation of the Faith to being Christian in the heart. EVERY GENUINE Catholic should reject Fiducia Supplicans.

  • @HolyKhaaaaan
    @HolyKhaaaaan 11 месяцев назад +4

Meanwhile, in the Latin Church in Ukraine:
Editor’s note: On December 19, 2023, the Roman Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ukraine published the following response to Fiducia supplicans on their official website here. Below is an unofficial English translation by OnePeterFive:
Communiqué of the Ukrainian [Roman Catholic] Bishops’ Conference on the Declaration of the Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith “FIDUCIA SUPPLICANS” on the pastoral significance of blessings.
The document of the Vatican’s Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith examines the different types of blessings that can be given by clergy outside the liturgy. The document also emphasizes that only those who want to live a life pleasing to God and ask for a blessing can be blessed liturgically. Instead, it expands the understanding of extra-liturgical blessing, which is usually given to all people, by introducing the possibility of “blessing same-sex couples.” It is this possibility that has caused a storm of reactions and misunderstandings about the moral and doctrinal issues in the Catholic Church regarding this kind of blessing.
This is because the concept of “blessing” is perceived by many as “permission,” especially as “permission to sin.” While the entire document makes it clear that there is no “permission” or “blessing” for homosexual cohabitation or any life of sin, nor any change in the Church’s traditional teaching on marriage, the notion of blessing same-sex couples, or even sacramentally irregular couples, can be perceived as legalizing these relationships.
The document seeks to emphasize God’s boundless love for all people, sinners included, and in this regard to show that the Church does not reject these people, namely those with homosexual tendencies or even actions. However, it seems that the text does not clearly show the distinction between the person and his or her manner, the merciful acceptance of the person and the express disapproval of his or her sin.
At the same time, the document focuses mainly on two categories of people: those living in sacramentally irregular relationships (men and women) and same-sex couples. Thus, the document treats the situation of sacramentally irregular male-female couples and same-sex couples equally. Both situations are gravely sinful, however, they need to be treated separately.
We see danger in ambiguous formulations that cause divergent interpretations among the faithful. What we perceive as lacking in the document is that the Gospel calls sinners to conversion, and without a call to leave the sinful life of homosexual couples, the blessing may look like an approval. However, we emphasize that the document repeatedly stresses that the blessing of same-sex couples is in no way a legalization of such cohabitation, and the Catholic Church’s teaching on the Sacrament of Matrimony, which is the union of a man and a woman, remains unchanged.

“Being baptized is not just a cultic ritual; it is an event with a definite meaning: acceptance of the universal form and Creed of the Church in such a way that they become my personal way of life. In being baptized, I accept the form of the Church as the form in which I find my truth, because in it truth itself comes to me. Faith is not an indeterminate and never-to-be-understood option; on the contrary, its content, which is stated very concretely in a language that everyone can understand, is inexhaustible. Even though it is by no means incomprehensible or arbitrary, its depths can always be probed more deeply. This distinction between what is inexhaustible and consequently can open new depths and new possibilities to every life and what is indeterminate and can therefore be interpreted as one chooses is one of the things that the admixtures of the present prefer to ignore. Another point is important here. Paul does not say that Tradition is entrusted to the candidate for Baptism, but rather that the candidate is entrusted to Tradition. Tradition does not belong to the candidate as a possession with which he can do as he pleases. Rather, he becomes its possession. As the greater of the two, it is Tradition that forms the candidate, not the candidate who forms Tradition. This fact yields two important insights. First, Christian faith has a definitive content, and this content can be unequivocally stated in our language. Christian faith is not a glittering admixture of Yes and No; its Yes is Yes, and its No is No. It is unequivocal regarding its essential nucleus. It is precisely in that respect that it opposes uniformity and is fruitful, because only what is unequivocal can lead us to the depths of our being, while ambiguity circles forever in the mists. Second, this content of faith is stated in the Church’s Creed, which is the universal form through which faith leads humanity to understanding in all places and all times.” [Joseph Ratzinger, Co-Workers of the Truth: Meditations for Every Day of the Year, ed. Irene Grassl, trans. Mary Frances McCarthy and Lothar Krauth (San Francisco: Ignatius Press, 1992), 228-229.]

I want to respond to both of these comments.
The assertion that Bishop Barron is afraid of being "cancelled" if he expresses any criticism or dissent is unfounded.
Bishops, Cardinals, priests with public ministries and even Bishop's' Conferences have expressed disagreement, partial assent, harsh criticism, hyperbolic denunciation and, in the case of Bishops' Conferences, a refusal to implement the document (as in Nigeria, Malawi, Ukraine and others).
Bishop Barron and especially Fr. Goring, who is known as a conservative, capable of being critical of Pope Francis, a priest with a wide range of opinions, could freely have expressed a critical or negative response.
      But theu both did not.
Barron, who is a wise and effective Bishop, and who has brought more people to Christ than any other priest since Fulton Sheen, gave his approval of the document. Full stop.
Fr. Goring, known as being very conservative, and also a powerful evangelist for the Church, has spoken clearly (and calmly, unlike some people) about why he sees no problem with the document.
He is also free to express dissent, as that would not believe unexpected from him in this situation, as a strong conservative, and as a priest who does not hold back on opinions.
Bishop Strickland, on the hand, supported Sedevacantism at the Rome Life Conference this year, calling the Pope "the usurper of the office St. Peter."
He shared a tweet calling Francis a "disoriented, demented clown."
Also, at the Rime Conference, he read a letter that said that Francis is "the voice of Satan" and "the Antichrist" according to the Book of Revelation.
These were reckless and frankly unhinged attacks on the Pope, but they are not the most problematic things he did as Bishop.
He was the first signatory on a document accusing the Pope of heresy, in violation of Canon Law (according to the Eighth Ecumenical Council).
Still, this is not why he was fired. He was fired because, after a thorough investigation into his Diocese, there was determined to be serious "management issues," either financially, in addition of perhaps the handling of priests or other issues.
Two priests have come public saying Bishop Strickland management approach and celebrity status was, in several ways, damaging the Diocese and its parishioners.
He was not fired for expressing Conservative views. Many Bishops, priests and Cardinals express even more conservative views than him, or give support for the SSPX, but see no discipline.
The cancellation hypothesis doesn't hold up, in my view.

"Word salad" That describes what Pope Francis and his followers have been doing since he took office. Nothing he states
or does is clear to the average person in the pews (could it be because he is a Jesuit?)
I've got a nagging premonition that the pro-LGBTQ (+ ...whatever ...) priests and the homosexual priests (there are a lot of
them in the RCC) are going to openly perform blessings of same-sex couples in front of the friends/families of these same
sex couples.(As well as a possible exchange of rings) A party (reception) will, most likely, be held by the participants with
their family and friends (who approve) afterwards.
I don't think that those within the church are going to be able to roll-back what I believe will happen.
Frankly, I foresee the same or similar anger and confusion for the laity continuing in the much same way that the
liturgical changes of Vatican ii caused as well as the destruction of traditional altars and altar rails (where people
used to kneel for Holy Communion) as well as an "anything goes" attitude regarding music and clothing traditions

I pray that you find the truth, guided by the Holy Spirit.

You can attend an Eastern church. We’re all in communion.
It’s not as bad as all that though. The pope has said the church cannot bless sin, and that hasn’t changed. The document is orthodox. Priests can only bless the sinners, not their union, not their relationship, not their actions. One can argue whether it’s appropriate to bless the two people together.
Paragraph 20 reads: “One who asks for a blessing show himself to be in need of God’s saving presence in his life and one who asks for a blessing from the Church recognizes the latter as a sacrament of the salvation that God offers. To seek a blessing in the Church is to acknowledge that the life of the Church springs from the womb of God’s mercy and helps us to move forward, to live better, and to respond to the Lord’s will.”
So the blessing doesn’t condone depravity. Rather it is meant to extend grace to turn toward God.

For those who don't know, what the Latin Church tried to do with that document is say there are two types of "blessing." The first is the traditional version, "Blessed be ___." As in, "this is good and we approve of it."
The second type is a blessing for those in need. As in "Oh, you are going on a journey? Well, may God bless your journey and keep you safe." The idea is, if you bless homosexuals, you are asking that God give them the guidance and strength to stop sinning.
The problem, which I think the document this video covered hits on, is that it creates major confusion. Because most people are not going to know that. They are going to hear "blessing" and assume it is a priest approving something. And when that something is sinful, it sounds like the Church is approving of sin.
I think it is very clear that this move was an attempt to try to appeal to a wider audience and get more people to come to church. And I think it is going to backfire. People who have a problem with the Church's stance on homosexuality are most often atheists, pagans, or already gravitated to a denomination that supports homosexuals. They are not going to be won over by this brand of "diet ally," especially if they find out what the type of blessing they would get actually means. On the other hand, once loyal and faithful Catholics are probably going to wander off.
Then again, what do I know. Maybe it will be big in Europe, especially Germany.

It is in no way approving of the lifestyle of a gay couple but is in fact a blessing from the Holy Father, the successor of Peter, appointed by Jesus; that they may grow in holiness, and ultimately towards a conversion to turn from all sin. It obviously does not replace the marriage covenant between a man and woman, nor is it meant to acknowledge it as any sort of marriage. They may not wear any clothing that resembles a bride & groom, or any clothing that may draw attention to conflict with the Church. It is meant to bring these individuals closer to Christ and if that happens, it will change their lifestyle. Look at some of the Saints!
Also, How often do we see a Pope walking through a crowd giving the gesture of Blessings to hundreds and thousands of people. Are all of these in a state of grace? That being said, it certainly seems to have fallen in a grey area and the timing seems off for this...But, maybe it is a small step in bringing these people back into full communion with the church that Christ instituted.

With respect to the Declaration “Fiducia supplicans” issued by the Holy See’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, the CCCB offered the following statement from Bishop William McGrattan, president of the CCCB.
“On 18 December 2023 the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith released the Declaration Fiducia Supplicans, which responds to questions that had been raised regarding the possibility of offering blessings to persons living in irregular unions, including same-sex relationships. While explicitly affirming the Church’s traditional understanding of marriage, Fiducia Supplicans allows pastors to bless people who freely request a blessing, seeking divine help to live in fidelity to God’s will. The Declaration makes clear that such blessings must be directed to the persons themselves rather than their situation and that they must be spontaneously requested and are not ritual or liturgical actions.
The guiding principle in the Declaration is the fact that the very request for a blessing represents an openness to God’s mercy and can be an occasion for greater trust in God.”
Praise God! God bless Pope Francis!
