"Because so many people have created airtight ideological frameworks into which every new set of facts must be somehow stuffed, the Russia-Ukraine war is cast as simply another aspect of the New World Order, or the World Economic Forum, or some other internationalist scheme. Thus, this cannot simply be an expansionist war by Russian invaders seeking to occupy parts of Ukraine that they feel entitled to for political and historical reasons. It must primarily be about whatever we have already been talking about." - Jonathon Van Maren, europeanconservative.com/articles/essay/russia-ukraine-and-the-fogs-of-culture-war/

Yeah, basically. For us, it can only be that because those are the stakes for us. Its different for the Ukrainians. I would support them more overtly, but I cannot because of how the situation plays back home. This makes me as uncomfortable like most of our wars because we will support child predators and secular progressives to stop Islamic Jihad, but then we will spin it the other way to support Jihadis when they attack communists/authoritarians.
The worse case of this for me is how we basically support the genocides of the Armenians now because we want to support Ukraine and Turkey against Russian, even though their values are really opposite aligned to ours where as Armenian isn't.

    • @TheWorldBroadcast
      @TheWorldBroadcast 2 года назад

@@chervon5773 Hey, thanks for this. I will give it a deeper read. I think Okiophobia is not the right term. I've always hated this framing game where I'm supposed to be labelled as fearful or hateful of some group because their ideology stinks. I don't think the Right hates the West. They hate the one's in the West who hate the West. Ie. Any support of Putin is an enemy of my enemy and not out of actual disdain for their country's values. I suppose it is then apt I guess to struggle over what one's country means. In terms of the Ukraine conflict it feels like I'm being called unpatriotic for liking freedom. That's not what the Left is proposing. It's anti-freedom, a forced agenda against the nature of the concept itself.
I think something that maybe shows differently across generation is that in my zoomer/millennial background I was constantly told in school that what America did was wrong. ei in WW2 to imprison Japanese people, that it was wrong to kill the Native Americans and so on. Not out of wokism, but because it is wrong to unjustly kill or imprison people. Now we are being asked by a distant, corporate, governmental, elite conglomerate, claiming to be the small victim of every problem, that the rules must be broken, again, for the billionth time, to be the one's who makes the rules. This troubles me greatly because if this war was to be true and actually just as is proposed then it would mean all of our values are wrong and do not actually exist in reality. What really exists then is the horror of the mere power struggle between forces who do not do things on principles, but only for material gain.

This seems to be the more relevant line from the article:
"The fundamental tragedy of progressive and media malfeasance is that the very real plight of millions of Ukrainians is being lost in the social media roar."
Part of that media malfeasance is the repetition of false claims (mobile crematoriums) and the portrayal of the Russian people as cartoonishly evil and simple (Russians invaded because they are jealous). It's also not helped by defending apparently odious behavior like closing churches and by straw manning people's positions when you're supposed to be "steel manning" them.

That was a great question towards the end about what happens with Ukrainians after the war. Where do we gravitate I also wonder about this.
I love my country so much, it's so unique. I thought before the war, listening to a lot of people like Tucker, how lucky we are here not to be woke, but not to be Russia as well. We are just the golden middle. I like our mainstream, I like what my sons are thought at school - to be patriots, to now our tradition, our Christian traditions as well. We still say Merry Christmas! and Christ is born! And Christ has risen for Easter to everyone in the street. And mostly get the proper answer.
People know nothing about the languages in Ukraine and I'm tired of all the selfjustification. What Russia was doing for decades to create this problem, to come "saving" Russian speakers later. It was a long-playing plan to destroy Ukrainians or other people's and create homosoveticus. With no language, no culture, no language, no mother tongue.
I can understand that outsiders can be just over, or indifferent or whatever. But they also want to feel right and holy.

A thing people don't understand as well is that our regions of Central and Eastern Europe have always been rife with forced movements of population to make people assimilate into the Russian Empire. My mother was born in Belarus, both of my grandparents were born in Ukraine, and some of my great-grandparents were born in current Lithuania. But, they are all Polish ethnically, linguistically and culturally. By forcing people out of their territories, planting native Russians in those regions, Russia can claim it was theirs all along. It's a very effective tactic to strip people away from their national unity and grow the empire.

I understand the argument regarding Russia's negative actions. However, even the bishop acknowledges that Ukraine does not have citizens sleeping on the streets. Therefore, why is it incorrect to suggest providing shelter and support for the 500,000 homeless Americans and the 37 million individuals living in poverty instead of allocating hundreds of billions of dollars to Ukraine? In my opinion, this is the strongest argument that the father should consider. The bishop is only using emotional appeals and even resorts to using the example of the priest's family, who are present right beside him, in a crude way.

That doesn't make the Poles infallible, of course, but I do find it very interesting that the Poles are among the staunchest supporters of Ukraine in the current war. It is instructive because the Poles, far more than those of us in the United States, know very well both the Ukrainians and the Russians, having seen some of the best and worst of each nation. It seems to me that the opinion of the Poles in this matter has some weight for fellow Catholics.

The crazy ultra-nationalists overthrew the rightful president, using FOREIGN FUNDS (Victoria Nuland bragged of $5 Billion) to remove the choice of the majority. Kiev is not representative of the whole country. In fact, the majority of the GDP is in the east, the lands taken from Russia and given to the crazies in Kiev under Communism to keep them quiet. All Ukraine had to do was be reasonably fair and equitable. For 7 years Kiev faked going along with a peaceful end to the hostilities. Kiev has EARNED the loss of half of its territory. They squandered their own precious human resources to dominate their cousins in the south and east. 100,000 to 200,000 ethnic Ukrainian soldiers are dead and roughly equivalent are maimed as a result of the crazies that took over after the EuroMaidan coup.

However, the situation in Ukraine is simply not this one sided. He cited mobile crematoriums which are not confirmed, and those allegations are even looked at with skepticism from Ukraine's more ardent defenders. If you knew me personally or had to talk to me face-to-face, would you be making personal accusations? I already admitted that Ukraine was the victim. But was it prudent for Ukraine to seek NATO membership? Understandable, but prudent? Was it prudent for Ukraine to talk about acquiring nukes? Did anyone stop to think how Russia would react to that? Hardly anyone mentions that Russia invaded in 2014 in reaction to a coup that installed a Ukraine govt. less friendly to Russia. I'm NOT saying Russia is justified in its actions; I'm saying that PRUDENT people take into account the likely reactions of others, whether those reactions are justified or not. I don't know all the details, and obviously, as an American, I don't have the same interests as a Ukrainian, but it's worth asking if the actions taken by Ukraine and NATO before 2014 and 2022 were worth the price of the present war and threat of nuclear warfare. I ask the question because I am not an ideologue pushing one side or the other, and I've learned that foreign policy is almost always more complicated than it appears to many.

@@peroercegovac1973 btw, I do get the point that you made (before attacking me personally). Your point seems to be that Ukraine has every right to seek nuclear weapons since Russia broke the Accord first. I have no desire to dispute that. But there is a difference between what one has a right to do and what is most prudent to do. And I'm not even claiming that I know for certain what the most prudent course of action was. Possession of nuclear weapons seems to be a good deterrent to invasion, so it makes sense for Ukraine to have wanted them to avoid further invasion. But it also makes sense for Russia to perceive, rightly or wrongly, that possession as a threat and choose to invade before that happens. We can decry Russian paranoia all we want, but it still remains a fact that needs to be handled with thoughtfulness and prudence, not ideological characterizations (as practical as those can for a country at war).

When you try to explain away things that should be criticized (the forced shuttering of churches) or resort to overly simplistic explanations (russia invaded because they're envious of how awesome ukraine is) it just destroys your credibility and leads people to embrace the opposite view. Why can't you just say that yes, forcing churches closed without trials or evidence is bad but that doesn't put them on the same level as russia. Why can't you just admit that russia does have some legitimate grievances against ukraine (the shelling of civilian populations in the donbass to name one) but nothing that could justify an invasion. Why can't you say that ukraine is not perfect and its government suffers from corruption but your country doesn't have to be perfect to have a right to self determination?

That is obviously evil. When the USA, Russia, China, Ukraine, Iran, Afghanistan, etc does it. Crusades were just in their inception, but were conducted poorly and many commanders committed mortal sins in giving their orders to do evil acts. If Pope Francis called a crusade like the Patriarch of Moscow has done then it would be just as well. I don't think in either case this gives the crusaders, true or false, any justification for extrajudicial killing, rapes, looting, etc. I'm also not blind to the fact that this is how pretty much every war plays out in some sense where people involved either do or do not follow the gospel to the word.

If we did however execute heretics, I mean in our political expression, I could not say it is intrinsically evil to sentence a heretic to death. Heresy, Murder, Rape, are all crimes that by their nature are which would merit death. Of course it has been the opinion of our pope to not execute anyone on the grounds these things are no longer necessary or prudent. My heart hurts for the innocent victims of this war in Ukraine, as it does for any war anywhere, but why is the United States being viewed by Ukraine and the proponents of aid within the US as the savior and sole defender of Ukraine's soverignty? (While at the same time they are not exercising contol and defense of the United States southern border?) Even if it is as simple as Ukraine good Russia bad - we do not have the money to continue to majorly support Ukraine. (Unless you are an advocate of Modern Monetary Theory which promotes the "printing of money" with abandon.) Where is Europe? Where is Australia? Where is Canada? Why are we footing the bill for the lion's share - yet we are not standing openly and without reserve against China's aggressions in Taiwan? Not to mention that China is standing with Russia - and we are kowtowing to China at every turn? The political entanglements between the Democrat Party in the US and Ukraine should not be flippantly ignored, nor the use of Zelensky in his speech before Congress as a means to morally strongarm the Republicans into capitulating to a 7.1 Trillion Omnibus Spending package that we can't afford and which is filled with left-wing goodies (in addition to the 50 billion for Ukraine). Ukraine aid should have been a stand-alone bill - yet it wasn't because the Democrats wouldn't allow it. If it is really about the plight of the Ukraine people and the common good, this wouldn't have been an issue. There are more questions than there are answers - including oversight of the funds that are sent to Ukraine. Prudential judgment does not overlook all of this and just look the other way while handing over carte blanche.

Totally agree, Lynne! Zelenskyy has become a sacred cow to the left. Holding the Ukrainian government accountable for how it spends our tax dollars has somehow also been confused by the left as some kind of Russian talking point. In all honestly, this isn’t our fight. If the left would like to strap on some boots and fight for Ukraine have at it!! But America is a sovereign country, and I’m still not entirely sure why it’s our responsibility to arm every country in Europe with bullets, guns and missile defense systems. Especially when our schools need repair, our veterans are homeless and suicidal, and our southern border has millions of pounds of fentanyl flooding though it every day that our own people are addicted to and dying from.

Living as a slave is probably morally better than letting the world burn in a nuclear holocaust. Certainly the Jews survived its share of slavery, and Gods word has come out the other end of that far stronger. Christians were persecuted under pagan Rome for a very long time too. Life is not the be all and end all, but sacrificing all life for the freedom of a few seems to be giving in to worldly pleasures more than Godly righteousness.
There is a question of what would life be for the Ukrainians if it were completely or partially annexed. Certainly there is some peace already within the Russian Federation for minorities. Muslims in Bashkortostan or Dagestan, the native Uralic peoples of Siberia and the north. Less than ethnic Russians? Sure, but better than an irradiated fallout winter.

Every Pope of Rome from Our Holy Father Leo XIII has had to assert and re-assert the fact that Eastern Catholics not only have a right but a duty to maintain their unique and exclusive practices and expressions of the faith tradition. These Popes have had to do this because they realize that such demands for assimilation would result in the elimination of who they are and what they stand for .
Roman Catholic Bishop John Ireland sought to impose upon Eastern Catholics in such a way and caused a grave scandal which led many of those people out of communion with Rome and in effect led to the creation of the Orthodox Church of America, in fact many in the OCA consider him to be the founding Bishop of the OCA I know he was a Roman Catholic Bishop.
So to sum it up anyone who suggests such a thing is extraordinarily ignorant of History and is actually going against the mandates of multiple papacies for over a century. I get it though, there are many fundamentalist Roman Catholics that espouse this nonsense due to some semblance of Roman Catholic triumphalism that they have chosen to believe in.

I respect the office of the Archbishop, but he showed his political cards hard as soon as he brought up Tucker Carlson. Why is the archbishop so obsessed with bashing Tucker? Tucker and other conservatives simply question the billions of tax payer dollars being sent to Ukraine and why no other country comes close to “donating” the same; not to mention the issues stateside that money could be going towards. The archbishop only mentions the name “Zelensky” once…in passing. He also never touches the involvement of Biden (or any other American politician) in Ukraine money laundering schemes. This has absolutely nothing to do with “supporting” Russia, but his leftist politics choose to polarize themselves with assuming so. If America helps pull Ukraine in with NATO, there is a very real possibility of nuclear war…is the archbishop really willing to hinge nuclear war on his leftist distaste of Tucker Carlson?? Let’s not forget many Ukrainians also wanted Russia to invade, so this “war” is not so easy to comprehend. No one wants Russia to “win”, Tucker/conservatives simply don’t want America to provoke a nuclear war for the sake of political money laundering in a foreign country, far be it from being “pro-Russia”…
