For me its such a hard choice between the YZ and the KX, because I absolutely love both of them, and as a hardcore Yamaha guy, to even have something else on my list of favorites is pretty damn impressive😂
Imma be honest the ktm 250sxf sound meaner but one thing we all can agree on is a 4 stroke pulling away in the distance is a beautiful sound and it sounds meaner from far
So nice, i have an RMZ 250 2017, my dream is to ride an YZ250F 2022.. one day ill have on, show us more of the bike.. and some 3rd person footages would be nice
That is the coolest track I have ever seen! You are a really talented rider too. So you like this better than the KX? They have a $1K rebate on the KX's now though. Hard to beat!
Trust me he is not talented, he is just improved A LOT wich is soooo nice to watch. I remember those RMZ times when he can t jump that 1:08 and now its breakfast for him :D KEEP GOING Derek!!!
What's up Derek!? I've been watching you for a while but have always been curious, who is Sam? Also, I just got off my kx85 after this winter and got an '09 yz250f. It's truly a great bike and is very comfortable, but I've just been trying to get my technique down recently and I notice that you normally stay in one gear when you ride and keep all of you fingers on the grips? Do you think that method could help my riding? Also, thanks for the great content! You've really been uploading a lot more frequently than you used to. Keep up the good work!
Hey Triston thanks for watching! Sam is my cousin. What gear you're in, clutch usage, and brake usage all highly depend on the track you're riding. In this video I am constantly switching between 2-3-4 gear. Since the soil is hard pack I rarely need to use the clutch in corners (because I'm in the right gear on a bike with plenty of torque) so I don't cover the clutch very much. For example, if I was riding my 150sx two stroke on a deep soil track I would have my index finger covering the clutch 100% of the time. You should learn to ride with a finger covering both your clutch and your front brake. Most of your gripping strength comes from your pinky and ring fingers. Squeezing as tight as you can with your legs at all times is probably the best first thing to focus on when riding though.
Hey Derek what do you think of the difference between the KYB fork and WP forks? I've heard so many rumours about how bad the WP fork can be, but are they really that bad? Im switching from a YZ125 to a KTM sx250f. Thanks!
stock vs stock, the KYB is a much better fork. Feels way nicer than my KTMs stock air forks. After I got the suspension revalved on my KTM I really liked it though.
I've tested yz250f recently and as a pro rider i can tell you that in stock form it has almost no power at top rage, compared to ktm and even kawi. of course you can install dual injector kit and exhaust system but it will cost almost 3,500 bucks, if you look for best quality/price offer as a semi-pro rider, pro rider, or you are just a regular rider who likes to rev your bike a lot, i think kawi is your choice. ktm obviously is more expensive but it has stronger engine package (ESPESSIALLY IN THE TOP RANGE) and it feels more stable, thanks to the new platform. yamaha is the best bike for an average rider to enjoy riding during the weekends. it is a bike with great tuning potentional but it will cost you a lot of money to make it as fast as ktm or kawi. my personal choice - orange bikes)))
I have a 21 KX250F also and that bike definitely has way more top end power than my Yamaha. My Yamaha absolutely has better midrange which is where I typically ride. I prefer the YZ for more reasons than the motor though. I love the width of it, it's so easy to grip without thinking about it, just feels like an extension of the body. I've rode a KTM 250 SXF and the bottom end and midrange was lacking in my opinion. Great top end that pulled forever but I don't ride up there constantly so not useful for my skill.
As a racer, I can tell you stock for stock the YZ is most definitely not the best 250f. It's down quite a bit of power. It has shorter gears then any of the 250fs which give it the illusion that it's faster because you can ride it a gear higher. But it signs off early, at no point in the powerband can it match the Austrian bikes or even the KX and the suspension is far too soft. Not sure why guys have such a false sense of grandeur about this bike. And before we call me a hater, I came from a 22 YZ250f and am now on a 23 KTM. B class MX rider.
You're not a hater at all man everyone has their bike preference! I totally agree with you that power up top signs off completely. I was actually kind of shocked at how flat the top end was, but I ride more in the midrange anyway and the grunt/throttle response in the mid feels perfect. I own a 21 KX250F also and that bike has WAY more top end power than my YZ. I've rode a few 250SXF (2020, 2022) and they have a ton of top end, feels like the never stop pulling, but they really lacked bottom and midrange in my opinion. For the way I ride, I really like the YZ power plant but it's not the motor that sells me. I like how wide the shrouds and frame feel when I grip it the bike with my legs. I barely have to think about squeezing it just feels so natural. The suspension stock feels great in my opinion way better than my KXs. KX I have to focus on squeezing but it does handle really well and feels flickable, like I can put it wherever I want it. I just somehow feel big on the KX. I also have a 2019 KTM 150 SX, didn't like the stock suspension but after revalve it feels great. Love that bike but I think I like how the YZ feels in ruts better than my KTM.
@DerekHallman you need to ride a new gen ktm. The new bikes stomps the YZ from bottom to top. That was my companion. I was never a huge proponent of the previous gen Austrian chassis, but I absolutely love the new one. To me the YZ is probably great for the slower guys, but I never found comfort on that chassis and unfortunately, I lack the budget of Star racing and prefer to keep my bikes mostly stock, hence my opinions. Appreciate the comment. Ride on.
