We want thug notes back
You can take them thug notes right? The thug noter, dude. Take them academic notes up and thug 'em. Yeah!
No you get the beanpole with the studio mic talking at you for 10-20 minutes now.
Amen!
Aye!
Bring it back
This is our 100th episode of Thug Notes!! Dayum! Thanks for the love and support along the way, y'all.
Here's hoping for a 100 more!
Wisecrack I love you, dog!
how about doing a thug notes episode about "In Search of Lost Time" by Marcel Proust
Thanks for all you do! I
Next time you guys do Shakespeare, you should do the Tempest
I remember feeling sorry for shylock. everyone hates him for what he is. his daughter runs off. and at the end he gets screwed over by some very dubious legal argument
Estefan Olivares nigga tried to shank a nigga over some usury man. Nigga was on evil shit.
Estefan Olivares The Chi locked and get it to Johnny Cochran for a lawyer
If you feel sorry for Shylock the movie was a catastrophic failure
@@Zoheb89 think about it tho. That was after a whole lifetime of abuse an prejudice that probably changed his good morals
But I love to see Al Pacino play that role
I just discovered this series today and realize it ended 7 years ago just to find he doesn’t make videos now 😭. His summaries are so easy to digest and I loved his energy right away
When I submitted the final draft of my capstone, the professor asked me if I wanted an A, a B, or a C and to support my answer with reasons. Given that he was the Shakespeare professor (and assigned me to read this that same semester for a different class), I told him that because I read The Merchant of Venice, I know that the humble answer is always the best answer, so I asked him for a C. He e-mailed me saying, "Lol well answered." I walked out with an A.
Slashbash *golf claps*
Ayyy
Oi vei!
Remembering this!
Biggest thug life moments:
7 years later and Shylock is still my favorite character because he's not shady like the rest of them. He doesn't hide behind lies, and he's a true representation of how everyone truly is.
Speak for yourself. Plenty of people around me who'd give their lives rather than do an injustice to someone like demanding a pound of flesh. Careful not to generalize "everyone" based on your personal experience.
@@granada1493 - how is that an injustice? Dude owed 3 large! And he borrowed it from someone he thought of as scum. And it isn't like he started with the flesh. The borrower could have paid him back. He never even tried to borrow the money elsewhere! He just assumed Shylock would show him grace, something he and his kind had never done for him or any other Jew.
A pound of flesh wasn't an injustice. It was a fair bit of collateral for such a hefty sum.
Wayne Feller
Shylock could have showed grace, but he chose not to. And that’s not because he thought he was doing the right thing, or because a pound of flesh for 3000 ducats seemed a good exchange. It was because he wanted Antonio dead and he knew taking that pound of flesh would do that.
The whole point of his character was that he was a villain, but not for his religion, like the ‘typical money hungry, sinful pagan’ jew stereotype. It was because of the treatment and discrimination he suffered at Antonio’s hand and he seeked revenge for that. And he had been walked over his entire life, and now was his opportunity to claim what he saw he deserved, and not bowing out to show mercy like he was expected to.
“The villainy you teach me I will execute”
He was a villain for sure, but he had reasons and motives for his actions, and that’s why people choose to sympathize with him.
Also he literally told a lie when he put that pound of flesh Clause in there “as a joke” and flipped it on Antonio lmao
This would've been so useful last year while I was in high school. I didn't have a single idea what was going on in this book
James Burgess I feel you. Totally understand.
Hahha me too fam.
I feel like there were other resources that you could have found and drawn benefit from but okay.
watching this the day before finals LMAO let’s gooooo
I felt so bad for Shylock when first reading this play. I always that the reason he did what he did was not for money but for the hurt he Felton towards the ppl that made him to become a bitter man. Especially his monologue at the end of the play "if you cut me do I not bleed, if you hurt me do I not cry". This play is known as a comedy but I felt more depressed reading it compared to the tragedy plays
Tragicomedy
In theater comedy usually means story starts bad ends good (for protagonist)
Tragedy = start good end bad
One of my favorite series on RUclips
I'd prefer to say "alternate perspective on classics."
implying this has no quality
*jerk off motion*
Ooof!
"wan't"
EpicBeard815 m
CodedVortex im black i look at the title Thug Notes, i assume that he was going to be some dumb ignorant fool. How wrong my black ass was for thinking that. This is one intelligent man, now i
Great video! But in the "but wait" section you could have mentioned that moneylender was one of the few professions Jews were allowed to have in many places in medieval Europe, and kind of by default played a really important role in the region's economic growth. It really adds a lot of complexity to the story to think that Shylock might not have chosen that profession voluntarily.
*Takes noose off neck* - oh, new Thug Notes episode
You doin alright, bro? It's 4 years later.
@@PiracyandDumbbells good, sparky sweets gone doe im gettn dark thoughts again
the biggest issues with shylock and why he went for a pound of flesh was that even as he was giving them money they insulted him and continued to insult him. the pound of flesh was supposed to be joke because obvi antonio would be good for it and obvi shylock wouldn't really take a pound of flesh.. except he wasn't and pissed off his loan shark.
"Y'all already know It's Thug Notes Bitches!"
Never leave Thug Notes. Never Leave.
I shit bricks of excitement when I see a Thug Notes upload.
Swagbito Uchiha You here too you meme lord? But... you a Zaibatsu fan. You can't be smart.

Love thug notes's analysis. You can't copy them for assignments as they're informal and therefore forced to change it into your own words. Makes plagiarism a less viable option. Thank you Wisecrack.
The film adaptation with Al Pacino as Shylock is really good too. Portrays Shylock more sympathetically than just the script.
Most good productions treat Shylock as either a very sympathetic villian (Does not a jew have eyes, etc..) or even something of an anti-hero, ie that he's been screwed over and treated like shit by so many Christians that he kinda snaps.
in the last version of this play i saw, shylock killed himself in the end, because of how bad he felt about giving up his beliefs
the play ended with the two couples getting those news and being all shocked by it
that ending kinda balanced the "its all good now yay", and made it so even tho they all got their stuff, they also had to bear the weight of having sent a man to his death
I don't feel bad about Shylock killing himself, he was about to skin a man alive and was elated about the thought of it.Sucks that the had to renounce his faith, but he clearly was messed up.
Whoa. Do you remember who produced that adaptation? Because that honestly sounds really interesting, if incredibly bleak.
I always imagined it as him trying to kill himself but they want him to suffer as a Christian so they won't let him.
I miss Thugnotes. This has been one of my childhood as a kid with an internet hobo lifestyle
Please bring this series back
I legit burst out laughing on "he's a prince!!!!" Somehow I'd never thought about it that way before...
Finally! I've been waiting for a new Thug Notes video for ages!
Why can't we watch stuff like this in English 😭
This series is so entertaining! Congtrats on the 100th episode. Please don't stop making them.
As my all time favorite Shakespeare play, I LOVE this explanation. Fantastic way to give the most essential info and interpretation. AWESOME!
I was skeptical of this at first but I think maybe the greatest juxtaposition I have ever seen. I'm so fucking impressed with this channel that it's unreal. I have literally yet to anything you've made that I didn't like.
thug notes should come out more than once a month
Some suggestions for future literature:
For Whom the Bell Tolls
The Idiot
War and Peace
The Cherry Orchard
The Last of the Mohicans
What about Eugene O'Neill Plays?
I will think of more later. But I have to say thank you for making these videos. You help me out a lot in academic team competitions and practices, as well as English tests. I have to say that what you do is so amazing. You have inspired to read more classics and be more interested in major themes of these wonderful pieces of history. You have opened my eyes to the wonderful wide world of classic literature. Keep doing what you do, because I am always excited for more!
Congratulations on the 100th episode of this brilliant series. Wisecrack definitely has some amazing content but Thug Notes is the most interesting and original show, I think. The episodes are very well done, the charisma, humour and insight of the narrator never disappoint. It's just a fun, wonderful way to get closer to literature if you have not already done so in your life. Thank you Sparky and the team at Wisecrack for the incredible work and love you guys put into this channel. If you ever get a chance, and find this subject of any interest, I would love to see your thoughts on Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy in an episode. Keep up the good work guys and here's to the next 100 episodes! Peace.
Amazing man! Station.
Thug notes on Flowers For Algrenon?
I'm surprised he hasn't done that one yet.
I second this
Jacob Hackman Yes!
How 'bout the Killing Joke or The Dark Knight Returns?
3rd this
So happy this page is getting more likes! You guys are innovators. Brilliant content!
omg I've got an essay on Merchant of Venice due on Sunday, I was so stoked to find this today, it's gonna help so much. thanks for the great vids, keep it up!
TBH, these are my favorite videos on this channel. I watch Jared and Earthling Cinema, too, but these are what I mainly look for. Keep it real, Thug Notes!
I love Al Pacino's role as Shylock in the 2004 movie of this. I can only recommend looking up the Shylock Speech by him.
I absolutely love all your content. Really, keep up the amazing work...
hey thanks for subtitles, I'm not american (or from any anglo saxon country), english is not my native language but I really like learning new slangs and ways to talk, also I love books and hearing stories. The subtitles make it a lot easier! I have learned a lot of slangs from this show alone, so thanks a lot yo, props from Brazil :D
I love this series. At first I feared Thug notes would be trite "blacksploitation" . But every episode gives genuine insight into an important piece of literature. I've had real Professors who couldn't explain The Bard better then "Prof. Sparky" . Great work! Keep it up.
I forgot how much Shylock gets screwed over in the end, even if he was the bad guy. Also no mention of the theory that Antonio is in love with Bassanio which is why he gave him the money. I suppose that one's down to interpretation and how particular actors play the characters, so it doesn't really suit the analysis
How is he possibly the bad guy?
Wayne Feller because he tried to kill a dude?
@@idktbh4385 a dude who treated him like a dog most his life...? pretty obvious he wanted revenge, not for the money, but for the discrimination he endured. Its a hefty price for sure but i somewhat get where it comes from. Noone was a saint in this play for sure, but the one who ate most shit was Shylock, from the beginning till the end, he had the worst fate.
Oh my god. I just discovered this and it has been only 1 minute and i am already in love with this shit. Best fucking content i have ever seen on youtube
While I already enjoy the stories of Shakespeare, this was, without a doubt, the best synopsis of one of his plays that I have ever heard.
You just earned a new subscriber!
A misconception in Merchant of Venice is that Shakespeare is being antisemitic. In fact he does not write about Shylok in the same manner as the other Jews in the play. His daughter is considered virtuous and other Jews are at the very least neutral. Shylok is shown to be both greedy and vengeful mainly because of the treatment he receives from everyone else. But instead of being a victim he decides to create a situation where he has the upper hand for once and that is his true downfall.
I'm gonna steal this for an essay thanks bro
If anything, this is a portrayal of how powerless the Jewish community was, and how vacuous and hypocritical the Christians of that time were.
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett?
I can't believe that Thug Notes and Earthling Cinema are both on the same channel... They're both so god damn good.
another great one sparky.
Please do: Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
Pleaseeeee do CANDIDE by Voltaire! :)
MightyMarin Candide would be cool
MightyMarin yes! they definitely need to do candide
MightyMarin YEEES
MightyMarin Agreed, but candied apricots are fucking disgusting.
YES!!!!!!!!
I actually loved this lol first video ive ever seen by you!
Merchant of Venezia, thank you very much.
you should do watership down
I get the feeling the more subtle message of this play was lost on it's generation.
MagnuMagnus - Really? Why?
Shakespeare: and here’s a Jewish character who got so mistreated that he snapped at his oppressors, and that’s a lesson that Jewish people are no different to Christians and shouldn’t be mistreated.
Elizabethan audience: hee hoo hee the jew said mine ducats and my daughter AND mine ducats get a load of this guy
Excellent analysis!
Great as all ways, thanks for all 100
bring this back im so sad i just found it now :(((
Since they're making a TV show about it, how about "Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch" by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett?
Love the show, longtime viewer. Two that I'm surprised you haven't done yet: Robinson Crusoe and Gulliver's Travels. Keep up the excellent deconstruction (both of literature and of the exclusionary nature of academia).
Damn I needed this last semester😂 as always, high quality and top notch vids. You guys are awesome
I always said, all Shylock had to do was super heat the blade so it would cauterize where he cut, thus not spilling blood. though it would make the process several times more gruesome it should satisfy the contract
Why did this series ever stop getting made? It's the only good thing on this channel.
I love these videos so much!
Great video, as always.
I'm early! Hi! Love this series...
You don't choose the thug life.... the thug life chooses you....
I still remember the entirety of of Shylock's "To Bait Fish Withal" speech from when I had to memorize it for freshman year in high school. Don't know why, but I do remember it.
Wunderbar -- And 10 minutes of Thug Notes is definitely better than 5 minutes.
"The Phantom of the Opera" when fam?
I posted that request too. I would love to see a Thug Notes on The Phantom of the Opera.
Do the turn of the screw please
Thanks for this!
This is definitely the best channel on RUclips
Can you make a video about The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe?
Timothy Reaper 7
This would've helped a lot when I studied this
Awesome Video 👍🏻
well put bro....love yuh...nuff respect...
100 episodes already? Damn, I still remember you when you were just a little scrub who was on Channel Awesome for a short while. Now look at you! You already balling with 1.5 million subs! Keep it real playa!
i still dont know why he not knows his gf's voice
ask lois lane
I think it's the fourth Thug Notes I'm watching and finally I start to understand what you are saying. Really tough for second language speakers.
MoV is one of my favorite shakespeare compositions, and to see these thug notes on it make me love it even more
Can the thug notes crew screw with 20,000 leagues Under The Sea?
I associate that book with a heavy smell of butter, because in middle school my copy of it started to smell heavily of nasty butter and I unfortunately had to throw it away, which I hate throwing away books.
"Gumby looking mofos" and added to my vocab. XD
It's astonishing material for this kind of videos.
Man your videos are the shit. Helping me kill these exams. Stop for a hot minute and have the next drink on me. Mad respect for all that you do. Thanks.
This is why I love Shakespeare so much, his plays are so subtly woven that they can be interpreted to have a tonne of opposing meanings. One person could see this as anti-semitic, the other that it's a criticism of Elizabethan prejudice. I love it.
Gravity's Rainbow! Please
These videos are helping me so much with my college course. Thank you!
Such a smartly informed and reasoned take on "The M of V," and I'm a retired English Lit professor.
It's funny how I'm doing my English exam on Friday and this is on it and you guys released this today
So helpful
that is an awsome shirt
You can get it at our store: wisecrack.co/store!
Do Candide by Voltaire. It'd be perfect for Thugnotes.
Hey Wisecrack
Ya vids r Great bruh....Incredible homie
Also all's quiet on the western front is phenomenal
So... can you guys do a Philosophy of Spec Ops: The Line?
Also, great video as always.
Flowers for algernon! I remember reading that in middle school
This is amazing!
GODDESS... I MISS the Thug Notes!
One of the most creatively initiatives ever on RUclips, only to rival to Horrible Histories and Epic Rap Battles! 😝
What happened to it?
The only character I ever found remotely interesting was Shylock. All the others were two-dimensional. I nearly fell asleep while watching other scenes but Shylock actually had human depth to him. I could understand what he was thinking but could never give less of a damn about the other characters. I don't know if Shakespeare intended it to be that way but that was the result.
You guys should really do Candide
this is literally the best thing ever
Cool.
Super presentation.
Pleeeeeease Gulliver's Travels!!!
you guys should do the Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
Christine K. Oh Ik I want them to read it so I don't have to
Cool notes man✌
I AM JUST DISCOVERING THIS GOLDEN STARHINE! THIS IS HILARIOUS AND PERFECT. IM BINGE WATCHING ALL THE VIDEOS NOW. NOT SORRY FOR THE CAPS--THIS IS AMAZING!
