I absolutely agree. It is super hard for him to even understand who he is as a person. A person who was working hard to match with others expectations because he wants to be the king and once he became the king and is able to meet his shadow he cannot do anything but get depressed.

This is such an underrated masterpiece. You can hear the pain and emotion in his voice. The complex song production that shifts throughout the track and the well written lyrics really emphasize the different sides/personas of yoongi that clash during the song.. it’s so well done that it’s mind blowing. I can’t stop listening. I have so much admiration for this man.

*this just hits on so many levels deep. i love this song sm. bighit robbed us by not making a mv of the full version*
Unpopular Opinion: But I think this is one of the most personal songs BTS has ever written. Especially after hearing Yoongi talk about it further during their Yoo Quiz on the Block interview. This is such a deep, dark, and personal journey that must've been so hard to reveal to the world. Especially knowing that people will respond with the whole "Why are you complaining? You have everything you ever wanted!". This one 4 minute song contains months, maybe years, of pent-up struggles and fears. Now I know this is not a new thing amongst BTS songs, I actually started a journal 3 years ago with the sole purpose of helping me organize my thoughts and feelings after listening to a new BTS song as they have so many songs with super complex lyrics. It's truly a shame that many non-Korean folks will brush off BTS' songs without even watching a lyric video (or even worse, judging their whole discography based on Dynamite and its lyrics...).

Believe it or not, a lyrics video of Fake Love was the first one I ever saw. You could say it helped me stay and explore their music because I don't know Korean.
At the same time, Dynamite's existence is not what makes judgemental people discard BTS's whole discography. People who are not attracted to depth, complexity, and meaning will not be looking for them in other people, things, and experiences.
I can’t stop listening to this song. It’s dark but so tranquil. It’s painful but yet so soothing. I’m fascinated at how this song is both terrifying and beautiful at the same time.
Only Suga could make a “shadow” so lovely and intriguing.❤️💜🐱

Literally no one understands how much this man and BTS saved me, I started listening to them when I was 11 and I was at my lowest dealing with mental abuse, and physical abuse being bullied at school and so much more I was so down until I ran across this song this song made me realize why was I stuck in the past? There’s nothing I can do about it. He made me realize how much of person I am and BTS showed me I’m worth more than anything I’m turning 15 in April and I miss yoongi and BTS so much.
I may be wrong, but here in the song, Yoongi was still running away from his shadow. He seems afraid to face it. After all, Shadow is always defined as something "ugly" deep within us. Shadow carries emotions and thoughts that we want to hide at all costs. Ofc confronting all that shit makes more more shit in our opinion.
But I really liked yoongi's shadow's part when it talked with him. Tho his shadow seemed a badass, his voice seemed painful. Telling yoongi that they can never separate does not mean that's bad. It means, for me, that separation would mean unbalance between good and evil.
Yoongi does not particularly hate the light. Who doesn't love "light" for one reason or another?
The problem is he somehow craved for a light without a shadow. So he finds himself in some twisted contradiction. He wants light but that would cost him alot.

@@huesofkai a person's situation isn't always indicative of their mental health. sure, this person may not be living a similar life to yoongi, but many people can relate to lots of things that BTS as a whole writes about: Wanting to live life normally, wanting to not be messed up in the head, having multiple personas, having demons from the past trying to thwart your future, the list goes on. this person probably doesn't mean that they're experiencing exactly what suga experiences, they're probably making their own connection and finding their own interpretation. and honestly, that's what music is all about; being able to find your own meaning and light in something that someone else wrote, and allowing it to have any kind of impact on you.

The people that follow them everywhere and are obsessed and the peace that they cant get and how lonely it is because yes they have each other but they cant have friendships because some people try to use them. Right like he has some good good vocals, have you listened to Suga "people". Like GOD, he didn't really rap in the music and just sang. I was shocked and surprised at how he sounded like he was in the vocal line and not a rapper. Like seriously I was shocked😱😱😱🤣🤣🤣.
So... I'm a bit of a novice in Jungian psychology (a psychology/philosophy branch developed largely by Carl Jung and Marie Louise von Franz) myself, as only I've been studying it for a little bit over two years now, but my parents have both been studying it for over 30 years now so I have a _basic_ understanding of it, and I'm learning more every day.
But for anybody interested in some of the theory behind this-the Jungian "shadow" is supposed to be everything that you repress (most often, but not always, the darkest parts of yourself-though, you can still repress some positive or beneficial things, for example if you were to repress your own creativity or ambition); they are the underrepresented and unresolved parts of your unconscious. When people talk about having a "dark side", more often than not, they are probably talking about the shadow. The shadow, in the translation, references the concept of being "one body", and that is... pretty much it. Your shadow cannot be defeated, or won over or dominated or escaped in any meaningful way ("you can never break me off"); the idea is to progressively integrate parts of your shadow-to learn to live and coexist peacefully with those parts of yourself to live a happier internal and external life.
I'd recommend reading more into Jungian psychology if you're interested in this concept; there's a lot more (it delves a LOT into mythology/folklore, religion and dreams and the significance of those in terms of understanding the unconscious-and it's basically the most interesting and valid parts of Freudian psychology, except Carl Jung eventually told Freud to go check himself because he was projecting so much onto his patients and got so weirdly into the psychology of infantile sexuality that it made Jung, and a lot of his close collaborators at the time go👀).
I'm a new ARMY but I believe BTS have explored other parts of it in the Map Of The Soul concept so far (the ego, the persona, internal lives, the anima & animus etc.) so if you want a better understanding of their work, I'd really recommend looking into the theory! Marie Louise Von Franz and Carl Jung both have their own books on it (I'd personally recommend the works of Marie Louise Von Franz over Carl Jung, if you're looking into the English translations of their work, as she often had more of a direct hand in them), and I'd suggest going straight to the source if you can (though later Jungian psychologists have some interesting books and articles too... as have Jungian creators; the Wizard of Earthsea book series and the Batman trilogy certainly have an intentionally strong Jungian influence, and there are even some podcasts, like This Jungian Life or Speaking Of Jung, which both have BTS-centric episodes).
Your comment describes perfectly what I feel yoongi was trying to describe in this song. We all have this shadow wether we realize it or not and it is only until we meet and clash with it that we can finally learn from it and coexist. This song truly made me understand that I was not the only one feeling like I had a shadow and Yoongi helped me realize that I was not alone
I really appreciate your post, this is very interesting. I keep seeing comments here and there about how some albums are inspired by Jungian psychology. I'm trying to get through so many songs, they seem to all tangle together. I'm a new army and the more new songs I listen to the more I can see how BTS truly does stand out, as a group and individually in these solo songs. Suga is afraid of flying high, it mean becoming a popular one. As we see our shadow in bright light, Suga noticed that the shadow becoming bigger and bigger day by day. According to the concept, Shadow is part of us which we hid because of insecurities. The bigger it became, the bigger the insecurities we have. He'd become a big star, but in exchange, he'd change himself and put on acts then hide his old self which is his "Shadow." He felt lonely flying high, as he hid himself in shadow.
I honestly and hardly believe that this song is about him.

Suga and Jimin's songwriting is so brilliant and sadly dark. These 2 strike me as the saddest members of the group and one of the closest duo in thr group. I hope they are alright and happy. The rest of the members too.
The lyrics are so straightforward the truth of the two sides in him it hits STRAIGHT to the heart like an arrow!

Success always has two sides, and the bigger the brighter side gets, the bigger the shadow becomes. I can’t imagine how huge it must be for the seven men who are on the top of the top. It hurts how honest suga is in this song, but I love it that he can put it into music.

I assumed the meaning was that, he had a dream (to become a star, to be on top, that everything belongs to him), and no one told him his reality (to be alone) and when he had that he wanted, he couldn't go back anymore because he reached a point of no return where he can only know suffering, and hide behind false smiles, haunted by these monsters who are only growing because of the shining light of his success, he can no longer go back because if he does it all these efforts and all the trials he was able to overcome during his 7 years will be in vain and he will disappoint everyone so all he can do is regret, overcome his fear, hide this suffering behind a fake smile...

yeah those were my feelings when i started supporting them too. i especially loved their album "Love Yourself" and how they speak about mental health and things that matter. they use their voice to do what they can.
