"Most of the country, unlike Florida, cannot grow food year-round." As a former Floridian and "prepper" for the what ifs, those are very encouraging words to hear and made me think if I should move back and start homesteading my 5 acres land out in Keystone Heights.
I feel like with how the world is moving, a personal garden is very important to have. I’ve had trouble just finding items at the store since 2020. The supply chain isn’t reliable anymore, so a garden has helped alot these past fee summers.
I looked up victory gardening on purpose because I'm moving to an extremely poor island off the coast of Haiti 🇭🇹. And doing something like this there would not be just about saving money, but literally saving lives. Children there are still dying from malnutrition and even starvation. This is something I want to "plant" in their minds because the knowledge to grow food has been lost by most there over the past few generations. Thank you for sharing this invaluable information
This is amazing work! The ability to grow food is so important. While I don’t live in the Caribbean, many of the plants that do well in Central and Southern Florida may do well there. Also check out Rob Greenfield and his video series where he grew all of his food in Orlando. You may get some ideas that will work there. And of course the work that Echo does is targeted at teaching those who will go to areas that are challenged with resources and help train missionaries and volunteers to build sustainable food systems in the tropics. Best wishes for your work
@@WildFloridian thank you for your reply. I will check these out as well. I have also been looking at videos on composting. One of my partners and I are currently in the process of creating a business making adoquin there on the island as well. It is melted plastic mixed with sand and poured into a mold to make very strong bricks and blocks. Since trash there is everywhere, it will be good for us. Too many projects lining up to mention lol. Have a great day
@@patrickstallings9613 we are still moving forward with the adoquin business. Slowly but surely. I'm going to have to be there in order to get anything done though. That is still a ways off unfortunately
Hey! Make sure you look at the US Virgin Islands dept of agriculture. They have great info on plants that are specific to the Caribbean. University of the VI on St Croix has the agriculture program. I used to live on St Thomas. They import 98 percent of their food. Good luck mate!
I would argue one more point, food insurance, the best insurance you can ever have. If all things else fails, lose job, get in a car accident and can't work for years, but you have 2 years woth of food stored on the self or in the freezer. Im telling you the best insurance you can ever have.
My mother grew up during this time period. The had twelve brothers and a sister. She said they were poor, however she was never hungry. Can’t even imagine how hard they worked to feed that many people.
I had a garden 3 ywars ago, all container. Then i started working and worked so much I did not have time to garden. This year, work has slowed down, hubby has built me garden beds. I still have buckets for containers and now i am doing inground too. I dont call it Victory garden, I call it my survival garden. I have liberated the pot holders from a dumpster to use as seed starting trays to start bigger seeds in so the plant go from 6 inch pots to buckets or beds, less trauma. I find many people once you talk about gardening are willing to share seeds with you. I currently have tomatoes, peppers, beans, peas, radishes, greens, and And gourds growing. My favorites are Tatsoi, the cow peas and potatoes. It is a start, but we are making progress. I am also ordering more seeds for fall, will plant mustard and collard greens, and other brassica. My biggest problem pest is the vine borer. I cannot outsmart that pest. So i will be trying the luffa gourd instead. You can eat them when small. Will watch the rest of the series over this week. Thank you for the inspiration.
I'm moving back to my home state and renting a house I intend to beautify with a garden inspired by the show "The Victory Garden" and its signature phrase "Make your garden a victory garden", which is to say an ornamental walking garden featured in each episode (Italian, Japanese etc). So I've been throwing the term around because of the name of the show not knowing what it means. But like you I'm starting with a lawn that will be dug up I'm happy to say.
Awesome informative video! We're both in the FB group Grow it Cook it Eat. I've been gardening for roughly 6yrs or so and we're almost neighbors....right across the bridge in Tampa. Happy Gardening!
Floridians struggle with seasonal timing, high humidity (leading to mold and mildew), and significant persistnet pest pressure. We don't have pest die back over winter like most states because we only have a few days below freezing if any at all. Most days are above 60 deg F... so it is just different. Many experienced gardeners struggle when they move to Florida. Also we have very sandy soil which is acidic and lack nutrition. BUT we can grow tropicals and there are varieties of veggies that thrive... just takes some know how.
We just bought our first house and I'm starting my very first garden . If I just go to town and have a ton of victory gardens ... wouldn't it be overwhelming? Like plants die overwhelmed ?
It can be a lot if you are brand new to gardening. And even when you aren’t new… plants will die. It also depends on how much time you have. If you don’t have a bunch of time, I would start one bed to four beds. Research and buy materials the first weekend. Build the next weekend. Plant the third weekend. Then it is just 15 minutes of work a few times a week. Until harvest when it is potentially hours off work, harvesting, cleaning, processing.
I am growing a garden because in this time I like having nutritious greens and veggies in my home without having to go to the store often. Trying to stay indoors. Growing as much veggies as possible in our 150 sq ft of patio space. Everything is in containers. We are a family of 4.
To be honest, they get some of my crops. And I don't consider wildlife to be pests... I plant for nature as much as for food for the family. Most birds eat soft body insects on your victory garden / vegetable garden so they are acting as a natural pest control. Rabbits... this is where raised beds can help. Also I put onions and strong smelling plants at the perimeters of the gardens to deter... and the neighbors and I have dogs... that can help. Last but not least, netting can help. Happy gardening.
Leafy Greens like lettuce would be some of the fastest. 2 months Efficiency- if you are talking return on investment of time and resources. Potatoes or Sweet Potatoes depending what region you live in for pounds, calories and ease of growing. 4 to 6 months.

Wouldn't it be amazing if victory gardens where a core value again across the U.S.
I would be so happy! It would make our food supply chain much more secure and it would reduce environmental impact of big ag.

I live in military housing with a TINY backyard so challenge accepted 😂 here I come container/vertical gardening
I managed to make my tiny military housing yard in Pensacola into my own little “farm”. You can do it!
If now isn't a time to push victory gardens again Idk. Food is so expensive right now I'm all in.

Getting the seeds out! Dollar store has seed packets 4 for $1!

Hi Jacqueline, You are adorable. This new series is just what I need. Was feeling a bit ho-hum about my garden.❤

Howdy Neighbor Tim! 6 Years! That is awesome! I love that FB Group. What is your favorite plant to grow?
@@WildFloridian Right now it's a toss up between bush type beans and cukes cuz both both are super easy to grow and fast to harvest😋☺
Looking forward to the rest of this series.
I am so excited to share the rest with you! Thank you for watching the first episode! 😊
How is your victory garden different depending on where you live? Your in Florida. I'm on west coast.

Just found your channel. So cool. I love gardening.

🍅🥒🌶Why are you starting a Victory Garden? 🌽🥦 Love to hear your why! 🥰
I am growing a garden because in this time I like having nutritious greens and veggies in my home without having to go to the store often. Trying to stay indoors.
Growing as much veggies as possible in our 150 sq ft of patio space. Everything is in containers. We are a family of 4.
That is amazing Alejandra! I hope you have abundance of food from your tiny space! 🍅🥬🥒😄
Wild Florida thank you. I wish you great abundance in your Victory Garden
Started a veggie garden because of my water bill, if I must keep it green better food that a lawn.
This is what i was talking about
Exciting! Can't wait!
Yay! 🎉
Also looking forward to the rest of the series!
Yay! I hope this helps you get a Victory Garden started! 😉
How do deter rabbits. Birds and other yard pests from eating all the hard work ???
To be honest, they get some of my crops. And I don't consider wildlife to be pests... I plant for nature as much as for food for the family. Netting
What’s something that you can grow fast and efficiently?
Leafy Greens like lettuce would be some of the fastest. 2 months
Efficiency- if you are talking return on investment of time and resources. Potatoes or Sweet Potatoes depending what region you live in for pounds, calories and ease of growing. 4 to 6 months.
I love this. My garden is not pretty (in the sense ppl like to think pretty as) but it is pretty bc it produces! I have a medium size backyard!
Pretty because it produces! Love it! 🙌
Absolutely love your videos ❤️
Thank you Greta! You keep me motivated to keep making videos 🥰
