I got exactly what I was looking for... an idea for something that I already have in my house... a mattress. My sister won't let me use her nor will she drive to my house to hold up couch pillows and cushions for me so mattress it is! Now I just need to buy some boxing gloves. dude, good tips. I've used the mattress substitute back in my college days, good training.
You were actually onto something with the tree. if you wrap a portion of the trunk with some sort of padding, like thick blankets, yoga mats, patio chair cushions or some combination of these, you could get a decent striking surface.
of course, it would take some MacGyvering to attach it all to the tree and either make it weather proof or easily removable, but definitely doable.
