One thing to point out. This is for 1.16 minecraft java, and some of these facts no longer work in later versions. For example, with the deep dark the brightness (gama), the game no allows any value higher then 1.
If you want to speed up your gravel breaking, go right up against a block at hip height that is next to a wall, preferably a stone wall. Then if you hold left and right click, with a shovel main hand and gravel off hand, it will place the gravel almost instantly after the gravel breaks. They do pop off out of your reach occasionally so collect about 8-10 first and even if you have to move away to pick them up, it's still faster than placing them in a line.
2:33 it works because the method used to generate water and lava pools are similar. For the most basic example if I spawned a water block every 2nd block and a lava block every 4th block, then I’ll have a lot of overlap b/w them. Set them at different height levels and with sin waves and boom you got something close to what’s happening.
A lot of people don't know that this applies to the coordinates of structures as well. Nether fortresses and End cities spawn along the same east-to-west rows in all worlds. Staying at specific ranges of Z coordinates and moving straight east or west in a flying machine is how I always find my first elytra.
the lava waterpool trick is probably related to worldgen. the game generates all structures based on a set of instructions and it probably generates the lava in a similar ruleset to the water pools on the surface. interesting little trick
The coordinates of villages, Nether fortresses, and End cities are also lined up. Somewhere out there is a video about a bunch of worlds where very specific seeds make a whole bunch of different structures spawn in the exact same x/z space.
4:07 you can do something similar in real life with seeing things in the dark. There are more rods than cones in the peripheral zone of your retina which can let you see better in low light conditions if your eyes haven't had time to adjust to the darkness yet.
Wow, you are so underrated. I started getting into speedrunning a few weeks ago and I learned a lot from RUclipsrs like k4yfour and Couriway. However, many stuff in this video are new to me, and some stuff that you explained were more clear than other RUclipsrs. Great vid!
I am no speedrunner, but I still figured a couple of these out myself. I used the fog edge trick a lot back when I had a crappy computer that needed a low render distance and I did the eye triangulation because I figured that's what you were supposed to do. It didn't occur to me that doing trig functions was probably not what you should do.
Insanely good video man! Hopefully, this vid pops off cause it deserves to! Maybe you could do a quick vid on the pie chart strat people mainly use to find nether fortresses (rather than treasure bastions) since it's a bit more reliable than moving to a different quadrant?
I've been speedrunning casually for over a year now and this video was a massive help. I already knew everything except how simple the degree chart was for calculation and how to do magma portals. Best time is 43 right now and I'm hoping I can bring that down knowing how to do half decent stronghold triangulation now. Thank you!
The reason why lava pool generates below water pools is because all water pools beyond 1.18 are aucuafer caves and wen aucuafer caves generates below Y -35. It terns into a lava cave

Questions for quadrants and structures in the nether : - the middle of the quadrants in the vid is the portal, but, in the graph on top right corner, it’s coordonates 0,0. Does it means all this is calculated relatively to the first portal I make in the nether ? Or relatively to the coordonates 0,0 ? Or maybe my first portal is always at 0,0 coordonates ? - just one structure per quadrant, but green squares on the graph has width and height. What’s beyond this ? Is it like a mosaic, like green squares infinitly ? Or, if I get lost in the nether, and go away from spawn like thousands blocks away, and nether find my way again, does it means I will nether be able to find a structure because I’m far from the portal ? Does it means there is at maximum 4 structures in the whole infinite nether ? Edit : I tested with teleport and locate, and for those who were wondering too : portal is the origine of quadrant coordonates AND and world coordonates is 0,0, and this is infinite mosaic, with probability of structures in every quadrant.

So the calculation you would have to do to know the distance to the stronghold is 20/sin(angle change) since that is indeed a hard calculation to do, you look at the sin function and how we can approximate it We would be using a Taylor series x - x³/6 + x⁵/120 - x⁷/5040 ... and that theoretically continues forever, giving you more exat values for sin the more iterations you use. (Also, in this case, the x is given in radians, where one radian is 180/π degrees) But the thing is, for small values of x, we only need the first term of this equation, which is just x (what I'm saying is, that for example sin(0.1)≈0.1, sin(0.4)≈0.4 ...) so instead of 20/sin(x) we can just use 20/x, because if the angle is like 45 degrees, we know the stronghold is practically in the next chunk anyway and we don't need to calculate anything We just have to change the equation so we just have to put in the angle in degrees and not convert to radians, which is by just multiplying it with 180/π. This gives us 1145.915/x, which we can just do as 1146/x, because the error will be a couple of blocks at most, and we don't care if we are less than 8 blocks off, because the stronghold staircase always generates in the middle of a chunk So you only would have to memorize the number 1146, and then do the calculation like on a piece of paper or your desk, and you can know the exact distance to the strongholf
lol now I find it pretty funny that I discovered the triangulation method by myself, and I don't even speedrun. Definitely just me being curious and doing math for fun so it's not that impressive.

5:20 you can increase it as much as you want! For example, gamma 1,000,000 makes your game look as if its completely lit with light everywhere (kinda op)
using divison by using "coordinate" divided by 256 i think you can see the quadrant your in its very difficult quadrants are basically useless that far away
Great vid for beginners, here is some more detail for those curious/want to know more: When entity scanning, or e-raying, as its often called, once you have found the direction of the bastion, you can systematically increase and decrease the render distance to find the distance of the bastion as well. Another thing, the spikes in the e counter can sometimes be fortresses or islands in the midst of large lava lakes, so make sure you have sufficiently large spike to guarantee a bastion. Another thing, you can change the gamma level up to 100, but 5 is the maximum accepted value in speedruns. Anything more will be considered cheated. Also, for nether quadrants, sometimes if you are going to a far bastion, it can be worth it to go to what's called an extra-regional quadrant, which is a quadrant beyond the four closest to 0, 0. He kind of alludes to this, just thought I'd mention it. Also, with triangulation, there had been a multitude of advancements. The current meta is with a special calculator called the ninjabrain bot, which involves precisely lining up your crosshair with a specific pixel of the eye, then the bot tells you the exact coordinates of the stronghold, the probability of it being there (it tells you multiple possible locations), the coords in the nether, and the distance. With the magma ravine portals, there are several more advanced iterations, as well as longer variations for sub-optimal ravines that you can find. T_Wagz has a great tutorial for this. Also, when you make the way shown, be careful not to stand on the magma block you first break, as you can get trapped in the obsidian that generates under.
It's all good tips, but something are... Let's just say in certain speedruns you can't calculate the angle, or avoid taking damage, or just stand around scanning for fortresses or something. That can happen if it's a multiplayer speedrun. And you are hunted, if you know what I'm talking about. X)
