Hopeful convert, here. Thank you so much for this video. Confession is something I am greatly looking forward to, but is also intimidating and incredibly mysterious having come from a lifetime of Protestantism.

Fr Joseph-Anthony, I am so grateful for you hearing my confessions in the last two years since my conversion. You practice what you preach😁. I’m overly analytical and you always pinpoint the crux of it and keep me from scrupulously or just simply guiding me to the real issue quickly. I do believe God gives the priests I have interacted with a special grace to say what needs to be said or just simply the stamina to receive and give absolution. Usually the confession line is 45 min to 1 hr and I’m grateful so many have come. I enjoy praying for priests in the confessional line and daily. I will continue to pray for you and all the priests on Godsplaining. Your surrender and humility shone through my last confession. Im so grateful for your “yes”. I haven’t been a college student in 40 yrs but I have been deeply moved towards my daily salvation by you. Thanks to all of you for answering the call.

As a new convert (3yrs ish) I started to struggle with this as I find I’m repeating the same sins over and over even though I’m really trying. To the same priests. I started to feel like a fraud. I mentioned to a priest that I related to Paul’s words, I do what I don’t want but don’t do what I want, and he told me that’s only before baptism. That stunned me and I thought, then what am I doing? I think either he misunderstood, or I do. I believe that this is my current spiritual battle. I will persevere by God’s grace. Thank you again, Fathers, for this guidance.

You are not wrong. St Paul wrote that well after HIS baptism, so the priest clearly did not know the scripture reference you were talking about.

@@polemeros thank you. 🙏🏻🕊️ That is encouraging. It felt like a thread had been pulled on what I understood.

@ If the situation St Paul describes in Rm 7.15 were not the universal experience of baptized Christians, then there would not even be a need for the sacrament of confession! You will find, alas, that there are priests who are not all that helpful.

@@polemeros that was the exact thread I felt being pulled. That’s why I was like what am I doing here? It was momentarily destabilizing. But God is good. This podcast helps so much. Also the Catholic Answers resources. But above all prayer and Scripture. I felt what you said in my heart was true that day, but it caused confusion. Like what if I’m wrong. But it helps to read it from another Catholic. Thank you 🙏🏻

We will never be perfect, though we should never stop trying, so we just have to get used to confessing the same things a bazillion times. 😄 Last time I went to confession, the priest actually yawned. I don't blame him in the least!

Fathers- Praise be to Jesus and Mary! Thank you so kindly for guiding us towards a fuller reception of the graces freely given to us in the Sacrament of Penance. One comment I have pertains to the role of the Holy Spirit in confession of our sins. From my own personal experience, I believe that true contrition is actually grace from God, in which we freely cooperate together with the movements of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. I do not believe we reach this state of condition on our own efforts. I believe it to be fitting to recommend praying to the Holy Spirit for a deeper knowing and a deeper contrition for our sins.

I’m very forgetful.. so I make a general list when I go into church and sit in the pew reflecting for a little bit, before getting in line for confession. Then I don’t forget as much. I’m sure there’s sins I forget.. but know my ‘regular’ general sins.. Starting with ‘I often don’t put God first in all I do..’
This is good timing, as I’m planning on doing my monthly confession this afternoon.

Between 2 women friends, i have kept one of the secrets that KEEPS them besties, i think...and to this day, it eats me up when i think of it. That's only ONE 'confession' i have had to deal with. You folks do this regularly... God Bless YOU!! 🙏💙❣️

IS IT GOOD TO PRAY THE CONFITEOR EVERY NIGHT. IS THIS SIMILAR TO THE ACT OF CONTRITION?

I used to wonder why the priest would be looking down and reading off something to do. Many of the prayers at mass, I think. Gosh don't they know them by heart by now? But I guess if you do something a lot you might forget where you are at the moment.
