Paco Peña made me love Flamenco. And much as I love De Lucia, I deeply respect this guy's choice of not deviating from the essence of Flamenco. .. One of the great guitarists of all times.
Paco came to my little Artsy..yet Hillbilly town of Tryon North Carolina a few years ago. He was with a few other flamenco guitarists and some dancers both male and female. For two and a half hours we were spell bound beyond reason! Can't even put in into words.......Dale
I love the sound of this guitar which seems to balance a good resonance with the woody effect one associates with an proper old fashioned flamenco guitar. What woods are involved in the making?
Fun hypothesis: both Chaabi and Flamenco are thought to have evolved in Andalousia, the two styles share a lot in common but each have distinct musical patterns, Chaabi is the most popular style in Algeria and, I think I have spotted in this piece patterns that are distinct to Chaabi (from 00:58 to 1:07) wich would imply that Peña inspired himself from Chaabi, hence the name Alegrias (wich also means joys), a little bit in the same way Fransisco Tarrega inspired himself from arabe rythmic instruments for writing Cappricho Arabe, when he was algiers the capital of algeria.
Music is not like technology, it doesn't have to advance, to put it simple if it is a masterpiece it will be timeless. Modern flamenco is great but why shouldn't traditional be great.
True. Similarities abound in so many types of music. The distinction is relevant considering the differing origins and repertoire. A dominant conversation is with respect to the particular, unique tradition of Flamenco as a distinct art form worthy of undiluted conservation. Other genre are influenced by Flamenco, but Flamenco remains conservative.
@herbnik Rosewood on the top? That seems unlikely. It is usually Spruce or Cedar. Just hard to tell because sometimes cedar can be light beige and sometimes spruce can be darker.
Paco Pena and John Williams happen to be good friends and neighbors afaik. Just for your information. I'm sure Paco and John enjoy each other's playing quite well.
Yes very pure flamenco. I like many styles and variations of flamenco, but there is something "punchy" about this :) Now learning pieces from Penas book "Toques Flamencos"! They are really cool and I will post some I've learned after I have reached something that is even close to "perfection" :)
That Paco Peña plays traditional flamenco is his own choice. That you find him boring, ok, there's no accounting for taste. But your comment suggests, to say the least, that you find him boring because he has missed out on the evolution of flamenco guitar. And that is about the most stupid argument to dislike types of music. How boring Bach must be then, he has missed out on 250 years of 'classical music evolution'!
I find it so unjust that paco pena, one of greatest guitarists the world has ever seen, has such a tiny wikipedia file. But if you look at eric claptons, it's huge! Anyone want to make Paco a lovely huge page for wiki?? I'm busy at the moment...
and the saxon media tries to portray the Australian John Williams as the number one guitar player in the world jajajja he is JUST one MECHANISTIC interpreters of this instrument which can only be interpreted WITH SOUL by the SPANIARDS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well, I think the role of improvisation is somewhat overrated: most pieces are often played about the same, with improvisation only here and there. But that of course depends on the players and the style: in the somewhat more complex pieces Pena plays, improvisation is more limited than De Lucia's playing, for instance. Defeinitely most of Pena's pieces are quite easily recognisable, especially by those who have his recordings.
"The evolution of the flamenco guitar"? It's traditional, not something that is supposed to evolve. Times have changed and the Gypsies don't roam anymore, they live in housing projects. We're lucky to have Flamenco music at all.
Not technical enough??? His technique is unbelievable- to play even 5 seconds with the touch, sound and rhythm that he gets is beyond most very good guitarists- the way he colours and phrases the whole thing is unique as well. A lot of good players good play the notes but their technique wouldn't be good enough to get them to have the right effect.
Saludos.
lol flamenco guitar with wooden friction pegs rare find. these guys get the point of the guitar as a polyphonic instrument and not just for insane wanking.

ALWAYS PERFECT TECHNIQUE AND QUALITY!
Paco is very easy on the ears, but try to play this stuff and you will find it deceivingly difficult. I love this guy.
I don't when did you figure it's easy on the ear
@@glxblt-sd1ze it means its easy to listen to and sounds simple

Great Music - great player - excellent teacher - 'que mas quiere' - and tradtional - 'lo mejor para mi'
Thanks for the post! Anything Paco Pena is GOLD by me.
Que la guitare flamenca est belle. Quelle émotion. Quel trémolo. Epoustouflant. J'adore !!!
Traditionnal flamenco is the type I like most, and Paco Peña is as good as it gets.
they both have their unique styles, when it comes to the people who create history its not just to say who's the best!
Paco Peña is magnificent---a great maestro and with such beautiful music and so very flamenco.
very beautiful playing!!

Uno dei plu grandi chitarristi spagnoli

BEST GUITAR PLAYER!
Genio!!
el mejor trémolo del flamenco
@Dzakovich000 You're right of course...rosewood's only used for back & sides. maybe red cedar?
@herbnik Rosewood on the top? That seems unlikely. It is usually Spruce or Cedar. Just hard to tell because sometimes cedar can be light beige and sometimes spruce can be darker.

I love how he ends, he puts his hand in the air!
It's called flamenco bro
@tmjcbs Actually, Paco is playing mostly Sabicas falsettas here.

Yes it is similar of the great maestro Sabicas...Thank you
One of my favorites...all my life
Incredible
I seem to recognize Sabicas'falsetas from an old recording
@delameu Sounds plausible.
But...
How did you see the back lol!
@tmjcbs
He is one of the best Flameco guitarists. I'm not sure if he performs any of the classical repertoire.
i can't find this Alegrias tab

this man is so good I'd be happy to follow him around the world just to part his hair.
Definitely a Gerundino- has the headstock.
Probably rosewood. It is quite often used on flamenco guitars

tmjcbs anyone who finds this boring is a fool.
Traditional flamenco is my favorite brand of flamenco hands down. It just doesn't get any better than Sabicas, Paco Pena or Nino Ricardo for me.
I find it so unjust that paco pena, one of greatest guitarists the world has ever seen, has such a tiny wikipedia file. But if you look at eric claptons, it's huge! Anyone want to make Paco a lovely huge page for wiki?? I'm busy at the moment...
What is the wood on his guitar? Too dark to be spruce, I think.
Nice
Oleeeeee
thats the point
Anybody know the name to this alegrias?
mis veleros
Ones who are good do not brag....
Anyone got tabs for this?
credit to the chap who wrote this as well....

@tmjcbs Jeremy Bentham would disagree with that kind sir
Tremendous player but looking a bit sheepish at the finish - missed a big note on the opening arpeggio.

wonderful guitarman, but his concert, for a couple of years, was really boring and without spirit, I was very disappointed !
Frustratingly beautiful.
