In 1962 it came down to 1 guy on a soviet sub saying no to using nuclear torpedoes. Of the 3 people required to say yes 1 guy that just happened to be on that sub at that time stopped it. He could have been on a different sub and it would have just needed 2.

What was not mentioned here about the Cuban missile crisis is that the US were not aware about the amount of nuclear weapons and missiles already fully ready on Cuba. At the point of discovery, the US military thought only a handfull of missiles of various kinds were ready, while in reality several dozen nuclear missiles were ready to launch at a moment's notice. If Kennedy would have given in to his military advisors for an invasion, the Soviets for sure would have launched them against the US.
If I recall right, this was also a reason why some politicians in the USSR were confused about the US leadership's assertive behavior. The USSR assumed the US already knew the full extent of the nuclear capabilities on Cuba, while in reality the US was only aware of a fraction of what was already stationed and ready on Cuba.

I love Fallout, the game
My father was born in 1948. Luckily, I can still hear stories of cold war America through his view as he's still living. He vividly remembers the Cuban Missile Crisis as if it were last week. I can't even IMAGINE the wide spread panic. He had to come to terms with the "Red Scare" quite a few times. This world is crude.

Hello Simple History, you should make a video on the "Bogotazo" 9th of April 1948, a date in which the capital of Colombia, Bogota DC, was engulfed in violence and most of its infrastructure destroyed. This event would change the future of Colombian politics and settle a common phenomenon for a lot of Latin America, it would make for an interesting video. Thank you.

During the the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Soviet missile sites weren't actually discovered by recon flights. The Soviets were experts at camouflaging, and by this time, they knew the capabilities of the U-2 recon planes very well. They had ample information from the one they shot down over their own territory, and the interrogation of the pilot, Francis Gary Powers. In fact, the presence and locations of nuclear missiles were revealed by a traitor. To protect this source, they conducted recon flights, but they knew exactly where to look and what to look for. The spy was later betrayed by a double agent and arrested by Soviet authorities.
Both Nagasaki and Hiroshima had numerous large military bases and military installations that were legitimate targets of war.
As to your reference to “innocent victims” of these two atomic attacks, what about deaths of between 18 million and 30 million innocent non-Japanese citizens of conquered and subsequently occupied sovereign Asian and Pacific Island nations and regions of nations between 1933 and 1945 directly perpetrated by the hands of the Imperial Japanese Military.
7:37 have to think of carbon dioxide from generator exhaust. Try to vent all the carbon dioxide exhaust out through a type of pipeline, that could have a scrubber topside, and try to have a simple herb garden set up, that can provide herbs an oxygen, And a O2 detector like a smoke alarm.
Nowadays you could use a utilities side room with a propane generator and wire in solar power down into the bunker. Use ceiling fans, and use led lights. The "plumbing sytem" could use well water, from the utilities elevated side room that also houses an underground well pump and water tank. The bathroom could theoretically flush into a septic tank or into the houses waste line.

Regardless of necessity, it really is tragic that the atomic bombs were used. It's really just tragic in general when any bomb kills innocents. I pray for peace and I hope others do too.

Love your show and its content. The regular narrator is eloquent and entertaining. The issue I have with this episode is the mispronunciation of the word ‘nuclear’ by the narrator in the first part which conce the Cuban missile crisis. The correct pronunciation is,( phonically); new-klee-er and not ; new-kya-ler. It’s a small thing, but good grief, so annoying. Thank you. D L A II
