    1. Take a picture of the object next to a ruler or something like a penny.
    2. Import the picture into your CAD software and scale to size based on the object.
    3. Draw around the tool.

    • @ironplatypus7393
      @ironplatypus7393 10 дней назад +2

      to add to this. The further away you are from the object when you take the picture (and zoom in with the camera) the closer to 90 degrees you'll get. This removes the effect of parallax to a certain degree.

    You can take a straight-on picture of a tool with complex profile and then load that into Fusion as a background image, then calibrate your sketch to a known dimension in the image. Then you just sketch on top of the image to create your scale cutout.

  • @cycleranger
    @cycleranger Месяц назад +8

    Great vid. One thing I normally do is to trace the image of the object, placed a rectangle border around with and take a pic of it with a small ruler so show the scale. Take a pic, open it in photopea (free online photoshop app) square it up using the border, scale it to the ruler measurement. Then trace around the path using the vector pen tool. Create a 10x10mm object (this can be used to make sure that you can check the scale is correct when brought into tinker cad), after that export the path as a SVG. And bring it into tinkercad :)))

    The intro was very impressive, and almost made me choke on my lunch. :)
    For me, the biggest challenge with Gridfinity or any other "storage solution" is figuring out how I want to set up the drawers. And I don't want to trial-and-error it, because that's either throwing money in the garbage or making even *more* crap that I need to store. So I end up getting overwhelmed and just not doing anything with it.

    • @UncleJessy
      @UncleJessy  Месяц назад +4

      Right there with you. I’m not even remotely organized normally so planning out exactly what’s going where feels a bit overwhelming. I do love that I can freely play around with the bins and the placement though.

    • @dan-nutu
      @dan-nutu Месяц назад

      It seems to work better if you have few(er) items and/or more space. Does anybody know of a smart system to store *a lot* of small items (electronic components) in not so much space? That would be something I could really use

    • @gridfi
      @gridfi Месяц назад

      It really can be a challenge. We found it is best to start with a single drawer. Get a grid, then go item by item for which Gridfinity makes sense (better accessibility, etc.). Soon you will have a full drawer with rearrangeable bins, for items that you need regularly! Then you can get a second grid and move stuff around. And repeat.
      Going item by item is also a good start for decluttering.

    • @AlanLaMielle
      @AlanLaMielle Месяц назад

      @@dan-nutu check out the "ultimate drawer system". I've organized a heap of electronics components into drawers in that system. There's a parametric freecad model to let you generate a desired drawer height+rows+columns. I've used 8U shelves and mostly 8x1U drawers. But have a few 2U drawers. Also there's a magnetic model inside to make the drawers snap in so they don't slide out and spill all my components. Finally I have designed a bracket so that I can mount these shelves onto a multiboard system on my wall. So far I'm very happy with this setup. Have organized resistors/capacitors/ICs/LEDs/etc, 8 shelves so far. Let me know if this sounds useful and I can share more details. Happy to chat more!

    The online generator looks great for most people. Another option if you use (or want to use) FreeCAD is there is a Gridfinity workbench addon. It looks to have similar features (grids and bins) as the online tool, but has the advantage (for some) of being fully offline once FreeCAD and the Gridfinity workbench are installed.

    Tip: instead of wasting space on the edges of drawers where grids don't line up, there's gridfinity extended on MakerWorld (not mine, just use it), that lets you do partial grids. So instead of 1x1, you can do "60mm x 2squares'. It makes the entire bottom of normal grid squares, then partial overhangs. They end up as non standard boxes, but you can use up the whole of your space if that's a limiting factor.
    Also there are some cool remixes of base plates - I've been using Clickbase, which I've been using. Has some nubs that extend to hold bins down pretty well. No magnets, plenty sturdy to keep bins standing in a drawer, and pretty light on filament. Just needs PETG to print them.

    Easiest way to make custom cutouts in 3D models of tools is just a flatbed scanner. Lay your tool into the scanner, scan it, then trace around the scan in your vector or CAD package of choice and use that as a cutout.

    Pro tip: Print a 10x10mm square, and then place the object on a piece of paper. Take a photo, and then bring it into your favorite image system. Scale the square until it matches 10x10mm on the software, and now you can cut out the object yourself. This is what I do in Blender and it works fine, pretty much everytime.

    This video is really helpful! Recently I was looking for a smallish container for gridfinity bins. I saw the US general ones, but thought I'd much rather just have drawers, because if the top opens, it means you need space above, and cannot stack them. After chatting with chatGPT, it recommended I look for "flat file cabinets". I found some nice ones on the 'zon, for about $54 each, and well made. Obviously I can't link them here but searching for the above term should give you a broad choice. With your video's links, I can make some grids that fit well in the drawers.

    Nice video. The neon green and purple on black was giving me some serious Tron vibes.
    I'm really surprised you can't scale up or down the grid sections themselves so they fit perfectly into the space you want to fill and instead have to add a big frame. If the space I want to fill is just a bit too small for one more grid space, I'd rather shrink the grid sections by a tiny bit and squeeze one more in there than to add a huge frame to fill the space. Hopefully that's a common question and someone is coming up with a tool to do it, or it's not hard to just make those tweaks in Fusion or the printer software.

    Maybe it would be easier if you use a 3d LiDAR Scanner, I hear there’s an iPhone app for iPhones with the LiDAR Scanner equipped.

    @5:52 What units are "Minimum base width"? They're clearly not inches, or grid units... Are those mm? So 5 wide x 42 grid size would be 208, but the minimum of 216 gives you an extra 8mm, 4mm on each side?
    For the video, black bins with neon tops seem really photogenic and awesome. For practical use, is it easier to find stuff in white bins?

    Dang it Jessy, I am in process of building these out for the Kobalt Mini Toolbox to integrate into the hinge system I make. BTW Elegoo Blue and Red match these boxes from H.F. pretty darn close.

    I like harbor freight but unless its going to sit on a shelf or something i like the kobalt because i believe it has the locking bar in the back so you have to open the top to open anything and thats kinda annoying but it locks

    I’ve seen a few people asking but didn’t see an answer. I used the generator mentioned in this video and got bins with a height of 3 to fit in the top storage with the lid closed. Just for those that were asking.

    Very helpful video! The links are welcomed as well. Ive been wanting to start my gridfinity journey but haven't been confident to start. Hopefully I can find one of those US General tool boxes as well! They've been hard to find!

    Also the video is just what I need, cause I’m a total noobie to 3d printing but I just crave all the organization

    I’m a little confused on filling the space gaps in the generator. Am I putting the leftover mm in the minimum base length/width or putting the full amount?
    Example: I have a space that’s 210x250. So a 5x5 grid will fit with 40mm leftover. Do I put 40mm or 250mm in that minimum base length/width section?
