The beloved sons of riders, who build their relationship with the horse with love. Horses respond to them because they feel safe and reassured. It is very beautiful, when the understanding is in this way based on kindness to animals and building trust on the foundations of peace between them.
When I was child back in about 1949 in Nova Scotia my Grandpa had a horse in his barn that he'd rescued from the coal mine. The mine had pastures for old coal mine ponies but the company had run out of compassion and were selling these faithful animals to pet food factories. My Grandpa would have none of that, so he stole the pony as it was being loaded for an end of life trip to a pet food processor and put him in his garage. He fed the pony every day, and walked it, and taught his 8 kids (one was my mother) to love the little pit pony. My Mom's favourite memory was taking the little pit pony to the pasture every day, feeding it, and then watching it nuzzle my Grandpa as he lit his pipe and sat there in the pasture with that pony for at least an hour every day. The pony was black and my Grandpa named her Coal. He loved her and so did my Mom and her several siblings. Coal loved them.
What a beautiful story of compassion and love! It’s amazing how acts of kindness can create lasting memories and show the incredible bond between humans and animals. This really warms the heart!
Your story should be taught to young kids and older ones as well. We all need to hear the heart of your Grandpa in saving this beautiful animal. To think that horses are ever mistreated and horribly used for pet food, etc., is beyond reason to me. Thank you so kindly for sharing your heart about your beloved grandfather. Yes, I echo your wise and insightful words of wisdom. My father-in-law grew up learning all he could about the world of horses/ponies...I am sure he would appreciate your words. "Dad" loved his horses and cared for them so much. When they were not well and had to do the most compassionate thing in putting them down, he had to leave his house and ask his neighbor to tend to the sad event he could not witness. The horse that got my Dad to love him was a sweet gift to that horse. I miss him dearly...he taught me much about loving his favorite animal. Blessings to you and yours~~

Those are some fantastically well-trained horses & ponies! The ponies I work with would probably be more likely to nip a child than to lift it onto their back with their head, and the feet flailing beside the eyes would make me nervous around any other horse.
