      Hey Sonnie, Scottish slang is contagious, I've lived all over the UK and found that people around me start using Scottish words like wee, och, gonnie and whit etc.... without even realising it.

      +Steve Whyte Nice! Haha I don't blame them. Did you see my Scots Quiz video? Gotta love the language :D

      Something (I dunno if I'd say it's changed me but yeah lol) plaid is actually the Gaelic word (not sure if its Scots, Irish or Manx Gaelic) cloth/blanket (there's really no difference in the words usage.
      The pattern is of course called Tartan, originates from Queen Victoria (or they do rather being plural lol) since with her romanticism of scotland, comes from the French word (I think but don't quote me on this) Tiretan.

    Ignore those idiots who said you were trying too hard, they probably will never leave their own towns and don't realise that most language changes are unconscious as proven by the fact you would use both lift and elevator in the same sentence.

      +Paul Crawford Aww thanks! It does bother me a bit, but I just remind myself that if they knew me they wouldn't be thinking that stuff. Also, you're right. It was 100% subconscious.

      @MrSenset 6 лет назад +8

      Exactly! I was in the Shannon region of Ireland for just 10 freaking (but blessedly wonderful) days on holiday and by the end of it I was having locals tell me that they could just barely tell that I was foreign. Granted some of that was probably just natural politeness but still, most humans do pick up the local mannerisms of an area pretty quickly when completely submerged in a culture.

    You're so lucky that your body re-climatized itself!! I guess I've gotten used to the cold a little bit, but I moved here after living for years in Florida, so I'd say even after 8 years in Europe I'm still pretty freezing in the winter and have to wear a HUGE jacket to keep warm😄

      +Wanted Adventure Oh no! If probably helped that I'm from NJ and CT mostly so I was used to cold winters and hot summers. We made it to Berlin and Dresden during the summer, (but not Munich) and it was pretty warm at that time at least :)

      Sonnie Travels That's so weird, Dreich is my favourite Scots word too. The phonics of it suit the meaning so well. I do love the word glekit too. I'm loving Spain, I actually see more similarities between the two than differences. They like to fiesta and Scots like to party. That's enough for me!

      OK I am British but have an issue with queues. What annoys me is when there are several cash machines in a bank yet just one queue that goes out the door and blocks off everyone in the street and in the bank. Just make a smaller queue for each cash machine and choose one. Stop making unnecessarily long queue!!!!!

I would love to hear more about your (and Joe's) teaching jobs. What grades are you working with? How big is the school? The difficulty of the language barrier and cultural differences are great topics too. I can't wait to hear more.
    Are you familiar with Rachel and June, Sharla in Japan and Taylor R? When I saw the troubles you had with your bank card in Korea I thought you might find some good tips on these vlogs. You might even make some you-tuber friends 💑

I've also watched Sharla's videos and a few of Taylor's :D Thanks for the suggestions though! I'll send one your way too: check out Simon and Martina. They're wonderful in every way. I would LOVE to know more about the process of moving to the UK in general! I've always been interested, but I don't know where to start (aside from finally getting my passport...lol). Thanks for making these videos!

    • @SonnieTravels
      @SonnieTravels  6 лет назад

      +Melinda Meginness Moving to the UK is very similar to moving to the US. The government is very anti-immigration so it's incredibly difficult to live there long-term without being a citizen. It is possible, but it takes devotion. The more education you have, the easier it is, but it's still not easy. I've avoided making a video on the subject because Brexit will make it null and void most likely.
      The main question is do you have relatives in the UK? Aka, can you get dual citizenship? If not, what's your education level and would you want to go back to school? That's how I was able to move to the UK with my husband, but after our visas expired, we had to leave the country.
      Thanks so much for watching! I'm so glad you like my videos 😀

    Totally agree with the whole patter thing, you do pick it up. There isn't really a homogenised language anywhere, and if the people you talk have certain words, and even pronunciation you will pick them up through conversing with them. My brother is the prime example, he moved up to the Central Belt, and has picked up a pretty general West Edinburgh accent quickly. Down here in SW Scotland, the words, phasing, accent is completely different from up the road. You don't even have to live in a place to pick up some of it, my partner grew up in Gourock, in Inverclyde, and we both have noticed that in the time we've been together we have been using each others patter.

    I’m from Orkney, way up in the north of Scotland, and because Orkney was Norwegian until the fifteenth century, there are a lot of words spoken there which come from the old Norse dialect of ‘Norn’. I did not know this until I moved to Edinburgh for uni. It’s funny now, remembering it, but at the time I was so confused because I understood everyone perfectly, but they only understood me about half the time. I remember someone dropped their shrug on the floor, and I tried draw her attention to it, only I said ‘peedie gansey’ (small sweater) instead of shrug. Everyone agreed that ‘gansey’ wasn’t a real word, and only the other Scottish folk in the room knew ‘peedie’, and that was the point that I realised my dialect was practically a different language.

Yea sure because you dont have The Accent certain words might sound a little off but who cares you try its fair enough. Anyone that tells you that your trying to hard just tell them tae. "Get Tae". So much. As the French say vive la difference. I like France to feel French . Italy to feel Italian. I just feel that the UK has gradually become too american since 1946, which means that over time there would be no point in americans coming to the UK on vacation/ holiday. In the US I enjoyed a short stack with maple for breakfast but I like not having it in the UK. It is something to look forward to. Please do more to embrace and celebrate the differences.

    I'm Canadian, but a few years back I moved to Scotland for uni. After I graduated, I taught in a couple of different secondary schools in and around the Glasgow area. I felt so strange at first when I started saying things like jotters, rubbers, and bin-it always felt unnatural. Over time, these adjustments just became natural. I would get teased for saying things like washroom, garbage can, and no problem. I moved back to Canada a couple of years ago after living in Scotland for five years, and I was then teased for saying things like toilet, "where do you stay?" (instead of "where do you live?"), and no bother. Some Scottish words/sayings still come out every now and then.

      Yessss! I can TOTALLY relate! I'm supposed to only speak American-English here in classes in Japan, but sometimes I slip up and still say, "flat" instead of apartment for example haha Luckily, they also say, "toilet" here ;)

    I chat online with rather a few people in the UK (all but Wales) and I find that I automatically will use "Queen's English" or Scottish dialect (especially if swearing) as well as adding the extra U in words such as colour. Theeeeen I'll be chatting with a friend here in the US and I keep having to backspace since it has become habit, like you said about lift and flat. And having lived in Germany for five years (US Army), oh yeah I can relate to temperature. 65F was a sweaty Summer and everybody went swimming. Didn't matter that we were on the north coast and the Arctic Circle was just at the horizon, we went to the sea :D PCS'd to NC in the Summer... right after a hurricane. 95F and like 500% humidity. That was many years ago, but I find that I am still cold-proof. Worked at a convenience store... "How can you work in the (34F) cooler so long??" Me: "Iiiiii put on a hat?" I would put on gloves and a coat when working in the freezer for an hour because -10F was just a little chilly ;) I think you were in the "suggested for you" since I'm subbed with 4 or 7 Scottish 'Tubers. Already shared your vid on FB and tweeted this video, so hopefully you will break 5K soon. A funny but awkward thing that happened to me when I was on holiday in Florida it was to do with the difference in UK and US language. I'm from the North East of England and instead of saying 'Mum' we say 'Mam' which is just a regional thing the rest of the UK says Mum and Americans obviously say 'Mom'. Anyway me and my family were in Walmart shopping my parents were half way down the aisle so I started shouting for my Mam to come here. She couldn't hear me so I kept shouting and then I realised this Walmart worker was looking at me strangely. It then clicked that the word 'Mam' sounds very similar to the word ma'am so the Walmart working was probably thinking I was really rude shouting at her.

      Jessica Coyle there's a few linguistic similarities with the north east and certain areas of Scotland,given the geographic closeness.for example here in Fife we say bairns,blootered,having the craic,aboot,etc!we say maw instead of mam though! there's a few others that escape me for now,but my sister in laws from south shields n she comes out with a lot of familiar phrases!where they originally came from is harder to say,but I imagine mostly up here,as it's more likely a country influences an area than vice versa!

    When I was young, I flipped fast. At 71, I don’t know. I haven’t been in a new environment for a long time. Now, I’m surrounded by Vietnamese, because of my wife and her folks, but I dug in my heels to stick to English for their sakes for getting used to the U.S. I’m willing to give it a go.

    • @SonnieTravels

    • @douglaswaggoner7487

      I assimilated quickly, mimicking accents and mannerisms without thinking about it. That was here in the U.S. and not needing to learn a different language. It is true that "you can't teach an old dog new tricks." In 2002 I married a woman in Vietnam and lived there for almost 2 years waiting for her to be able to move to the U.S. Even though nobody around me spoke English I couldn't learn Vietnamese language no matter how hard I tried.

      Sonnie Travels I didn’t. I was there to be with my wife. I wanted to make sure that our marriage would be good. So many marry for the ticket to the U.S., then once here run off and can’t be found. They had secretly arranged things with relatives who are here and are illegal always hiding from authorities. It’s an ugly life they fall into, tragic! Sigh!

I only found out a couple of weeks ago that the process of creating pre-ripped jeans which happens mostly in places like India, involve pollutants which mostly go into the local rivers etc. I had no idea about this. I'm advising my son and his girlfriend to start ripping their own jeans and contribute something towards making the world a safer place. No judgement, just information.

    I'm glad that Sonnie (I don't know about her husband) changed her lingo when she was in Scotland. I mean, if you go to another country, you should do things their way. Continuing to do it your own way can be considered rude, ignorant, and/or even disrespectful. You wouldn't go to a non English-speaking country and demand that the locals speak English. No, you should learn their language and their way of living.

      Haha I love how you said, "The American"! Do you get asked all those questions as if you're an ambassador for your country? I really struggle to explain our current political affairs lmao

      ALWAYS!! And, they are believers in EVERYthing they see on the telly! I come from Atlanta (originally) and moved here from Miami. Lol......they say, "oh, the city with all the drugs?" because all they know about Miami is that it's WARM (I say it's HOT!) and what they've seen on Miami Vice! What I tell them that I feel MORE at home in the U.K. than Miami because everyone speaks English here - and they don't in Miami!!

    • @SonnieTravels
      @SonnieTravels  6 лет назад

      Eh we have family members like that too... One of them just said something really stupid about how amazon is only around becaue of millenials....
      Huh, drugs are definitely not one of the first things I think of when I think of Miami haha But HOT certainly is haha I felt more at home in the UK than the US, but not because of the language.

    The whole rain thing is a myth haha. Rained like 1 day during summer where i live. I think people assume it only rains in the UK because London is often dull with pollution.

    • @SonnieTravels
      @SonnieTravels  6 лет назад

      +Banginyermamsince93 Well it definitely rains more in Scotland than most parts of the US (the North West being a big exception) for sure. However, it wasn't enough to bother me at all :)

    Hello! Can't help but notice your gryffindor shirt - have you heard of the edinburgh uni harry potter society? We meet every wednesday night, just google us for more info! We do a lot of events like pub quizzes, debate nights, craft nights, our most popular event is our sorting ceremony but we also have christmas at the weasleys, a popular event for those who are a little bit homesick! Would be awesome to see you there!

      +Sparky Thanks so much for the invite! I saw you guys at the midnight showing of Fantastic Beasts actually! But I thought I could only join if I went to Edinburgh University (I went to Napier) Is that not the case? Also, I actually had to move because my visa expired so I'm living in Japan now

      You don't even have to be a student to come along - I went to Napier and was even vice president a couple of years back. The fantastic beasts showing was excellent, we booked out an entire cinema screen for the society! Awww I'm sorry your visa expired :( Hopefully we can welcome you back to Scotland at somepoint :)

    Travel broadens the mind and as they say, when in Rome do as the Romans do. Hope you enjoyed your time in Scotland and travelling throughout Europe, my son was in Japan last year (Tokyo & Kyoto) said it and people were incredible, hope you find the same. You have to visit the temple's. Cheers.

      Thanks so much! We've visited a few temples, but haven't been to Tokyo or Kyoto yet. Luckily, we still have time :) We'll be in Japan for at least another year and we're really enjoying it, but eventually, we'll make our way back to Europe and settle down there.

      That's awesome! Glasgow is a cool place, but don't let them talk crap about Edinburgh to you ;) I miss Edinburgh sooooooooooooo much! A felt like I fit in in Scotland, but here in Japan that's impossible as a foreigner. We teach English here :) We purposely chose jobs that we could travel with (^_^) If English is your native language and you have you Bachelors, you could do it too! Thanks so much and thanks for commenting!

Unbelievable!). For now it's just a job opportunity that might take me there, from Toulouse, let's see ! 🤞

    The people that are saying that your trying to hard are probably saying it because your using scottish lingo with an american accent and it sounds off. They aren't justified in that opinion but i think that's the basis of their point but it't not a very good one.

    So i have never traveled outside the U.S. other than Niagara falls Canada. I am orgionaly from cape may county N.J. but since I started driving an 18 wheeler, with most of my loads taking me aloung southern routs i am told that i have picked up a slight southern draw. I can not realy hear it though.

      +Coldburn. Winterborn My family used to have holiday weekends down in Cape May /Wild Wood every summer! :D I've heard southern accents are very easy to pick up. It's also supposed to be a sign of being an empathetic person (to pick up accents quickly) according to some studies :)

    Another travel advantage of Europe is the amount of time off work. You can't go far without having time to do it.
    As far as using the local lingo? Ignore the nay sayers and get on with immersing yourself in the local culture, it will open your eyes and your mind. Travel is the best educator.
