Hi. Great video. I lived in Kilburn for 60 yrs and recently moved to Euston near British library. I remember many things that are no longer there such as the shops British Home Stores, Woolworths, the Cinema which is now a mosque (close to Marriott Hotel), a large butchers shop, a motor cycle shop etc. My hobby at one time was to sing in a band at the Cole Shedd bar (top end of Kilburn near Tricycle theatre). Many famous individuals, such as David Bowie (met him in local laundry mat in Boundary Road off the famous Abbey Rd), Kim Wild, Jon Moss drummer (lived on Belsize Lane), the Gallaghers (top of Boundary Rd), Kate Moss (lived opposite my council flat in large house - renamed area of West Hampstead - aka Kilburn 😂), lived in and around the Kilburn area. In fact, the flat I used to live in at 18 Cheshunt house was a former family home of the Appleton sisters in All Saints for a short while. Shirley Bassey lived in a flat above Superdrug chemists at one point and Dudley Moore spent some time there with her as a lodger when he was broke. Authors AA Milne and George Orwell lived in Mortimer Crescent in Kilburn Priory. There is a lot of history around the area of Kilburn including the one about Kilburn Well which once provided spring water from underground which was used as a health aid. There is now only a plaque on the pavement which commemorates Kilburn Well just on the corner of the pizza restaurant Franco Mancas. The famous cyclist Bradley Wiggins used to attend the St Augustine school just around the corner from Kilburn and used to frequent Jack’s café (aka greasy spoon to the locals). Bradley nicknames himself as ‘a kid from Kilburn’ and I used to say that I was just ‘a kidette from Kilburn’ 😂 Happy memories!
You're right, a lot of history in these parts.. The cinema (now mosque) you talk about at the top of Maida Vale had a blue plaque that sadly vanished after it was repurposed. I would always see it when I passed but never read it up close. I know it's a historic building, possibly the first cinema in this part of London or something, but can't find anything online now relating to it! EDIT: After further research my suspicions were correct - it was cinema related BUT it was the building next door! 136 Maida Vale, long since demolished and it was replaced with flats, was the building where William Friese-Greene gave (possibly) THE first demonstration of a moving picture in 1889 (disputed by the Lumiere brothers). He grabbed a policeman off the street who unwittingly became the first ever cinema goer! A real shame Camden council did not re-install the blue plaque, hopefully some campaign can force them into it in the future.
I lived at 6 Tennyson Rd.over 40 years ago and worked in the National Ballroom, The Brondesbury and the North London Tavern.Used to go in the Queens Arms ,The Old Bell and Biddy Mulligans for a pint on my day off.Have fond memories of Kilburn but from what I can see things have gone downhill as they have here in America where I've lived for the last 35 years. Cheers and good luck!🍻
Brilliant work! concise, beautifully shot and highly informative videos on London. Great seeing these historical places as a viewer outside the UK. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the video :) my Great Grandmother was born here in 1910 and lived in the slum housing. She moved out to Edgware in the 1930's. Crazy how different it would have been, but also that she would have seen the same old buildings!
Still live here...thank you Dwayne good work...my Father was an Irish immigrant as I never knew him I wonder if he actually carried a suitcase from Euston to Kilburn. It would be nice to believe he was here at some point.
London looks like a shambles now. I used to go to Tricycle theatre in Kilburn for cutting edge plays in the 90s. It was up-and-becoming, with a nice buzz and identity. I saw a play by the Nobel Prize Poet, Dereck Walcott, a St Lucian, at the Tricycle, staring Norman Beaton (Desmond on the TV show). I also saw Irish playwright Synge's plays. These two communities, Caribbean (mainly St Lucian and Dominicans) and Irish were its backbone. It just looks like globalism has got out of hand, and all its identity has been ripped out like a gutted fish. And left with those cheap high street shops below Victorian buildings, and nasty looking estate agents.
I loved growing up there and spent the first 27 years of my life there. It looks so sad now and it's criminal there trying to get rid of the name my local spot will always be the Chippenham or south kilburn and not Madi Hill.
This is an amzing video with so much history. My favourite part is learning about the name and its meaning as in "royal stream" who would have thought. Wow, amazing thank u😊
There was a fair bit of Irish in Kensington, dusty Springfield for one both her parents were Irish. Camden as well boy George’s family were Irish. The in the east end a lot of people has Irish ancestry including the krays.
Islington too, Finsbury Park, my old manor: Johnny Rotten (Sex Pistols) had Irish parents. Jermey Corbyn replaced, as an MP, the an Irish born MP for North Islington.
Great vid. Perfectly captures the ambience of the area. Yes, it’s a bit edgy but it’s a great place to live and the mix of cultures makes for a colourful existence. Transport links are amazing too which is a huge plus.
Really enjoyed the video. I`ve used to live in Cricklewood and sadly I can see prices increasing sharply. Shame the area no longer has music venues - who remember the Good Ship?
Shot of the building next to kilburn Jubilee line station on Shoot up Hill shows where the old BT Telephone House stood back in the 90’s, where I’d attended several courses/detached duty days when living close to the ‘other end’ of the A5 near Edgware. I remember it being converted, watching it from the Met line trains on my usual commute, along with the mansion houses now behind, being constructed in the former car park.
❤ Kilburn. Oh, 'them' estate agents and hipsters they brought in..... I used to live in 'Kingsgate Village'..... till Hoegaarden became readily available on the High Road.
Thanks loads Dwayne. Nicely shot and edited. I lived there for 25 years until 2017. i miss it a lot but will always be proud that most of my life was spent as a resident of the Kilburn High Road. Thanks also for the update about those estate agents. I had noticed them taking more root around the place but never dreamed what they were up to.
There is an old saying when the Irish ☘️ move out the place goes to ruins sadly Kilburn is full of foreigners, it would be great if the Irish Scots and Welsh came back.

I half lived in Dulwich and half up North in the 90s Used to go up to kilburn 2 or 3 more times a wk when in london ...great pubs , vibe and best guiness and prices were cheaper than up North for guiness . Hadnt been in 4 or 5 years or so when i went to Kilburn in early 2000s... most the irish pubs and cafes were closed down and the irish seemed to have disappeared... was disheartening ...but thats what they call progress i guess

Good stuff Dewyne. I do like the warts and all shots you take of these areas. Especially the last shot.
It was actually the Catholic church quex rd that drew the Irish to kilburn
Your videos are great man. Such interesting anecdotes for a Ward people would typically overlook and discount. Keep it up!
Nice to hear, thanks mate

The Krays had some Irish blood in them but we don't boast about it!!
Great video ..was in Kilburn last week and the place is gone downhill big time.

What is Cricklewood like to live in? Is it safe. It's still relatively affordable for its location.
@@divinefoods5918 it is getting better. It can be a mixed bag but overall good transport links to Central London.

I thought the history of Kilburn was when they killed that lad Burny, that's why it's called kill burn. You don't know what you're talking about.
Haha, ok I'll keep quiet.
Bare mudgies now
Looks miserable tbh. But thank’s for video
