Here is a list of Caran d ache rich pastel pencils colours I usually use: numbers...
    Primary colours...
    Reds... 788-060, 080
    Yellows... 788- 240, 530, 035
    Blue... 788- 145
    Orange 788-052
    Purple 788-099
    Green 788-719
Carbothello pencils are... green 1400/585, red... 305, orange, 221, lemon yellow 205, yellow ochre 685 and white 100. I don't use this brand's blues as some of the lightfastness is poor. so I use Conti a Paris ones for them,... No10, No 06, No 22 and No46. Also the purple red for the deep shadows ... No19
If you can afford it I would recommend buying the sets as the extra colours would be very useful for clothes and backgrounds and can work out cheaper per pencil... affiliate links below.

I continue to be amazed how valuable ALL of your pastel portrait tutorials are because they are so superior to any others on RUclips. I would tell anyone who is interested in learning about pastels to watch your tutorials over and over for each time you see them you learn something additional which was just casually said. Your comment on being patient and building layer upon layer is so important.

Hi Dave, I love your work and these tutorials are helping me enormously. I used to draw portraits in pastel for friends in the ’70s but didn’t have the help of tutorials such as these to help me improve unfortunately. I have just ordered a fresh set of pencils intending to pick up where I left off., and have just finished my 2nd year of a Fine Art Painting degree ( I’m an extra-mature student), but I find that attention to detail in my work is frowned upon, although that is my natural way. Once I graduate I can do whatever I want but sometimes I doubt where I should be going with my art. I imagine that you’ve spent years practising to achieve this standard, and only wish that I had stuck at it.

Hi Pauline, Thrilled that my tutorials are helping you so much... means a lot to me. Congratulations on finishing the 2nd year of the Fine Art Painting degree... I would just enjoy the looseness of expression then as you mentioned you can manifest your own way after you graduate. I had a break from art for around twenty years... focusing on being with family at the time. Been back from 2016 and enjoying all the new materials and technologies that are available now. I used to be obsessed with details in my early years, but now love to be more free flowing and loose… details seem to take care of themselves. I have studied eastern philosophy since I was 19… 62 now. I find just letting go of wanting and just being is so liberating. All the very best with you artwork, thanks for the kind words. 😊🙏

Thanks for your reply Dave and your valuable advice. As soon as I can afford some more pencils and grey pastelmat, I will be joining your Patreon channel I’m hoping that I may get some birthday money for my 70th in a few day's time so that I can indulge myself. ☺️ Meanwhile, I’ll keep watching and learning from your fabulous tutorials.

I have to say it looks really strange to have you sticking your fingers through her glasses! Just weird. Of course that’s because you’ve done such a beautiful job on your painting. Thank you for sharing..
