  • Welcome to the second Conversations of Steele, a very special event to celebrate the life of a much-loved former Head of School and Professor of Oral Health Services Research, Jimmy Steele, CBE. Head of the School of Dental Sciences, 2009-2015, he was best known for his review of NHS Dentistry in the Steele Report and renowned for his enthusiasm in teaching. Professor Steele’s research included work in primary care, clinical trials, health economics and quality of life measurement and he authored or contributed to several books in areas such as restorative and preventative dentistry. He was extremely passionate about discussing the big issues we face in dentistry and as such we have brought three leading advocates on the subject of Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Dental Profession.
Facilitated by our current Head of School, Professor Justin Durham, we welcome you to watch and comment on an insightful and inspiring conversation on Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Dental Profession between our speakers:
    • Lauren Harrhy, GDP, BDA Committee member and founder of charity, Confidental and Facebook group Mental Dental
    • Chloe Lennox, Foundation Dentist who in 2022 organised a national meeting on Mental Health and Wellbeing as a Dental and Dental Therapy student
    • Anastasios Plessas, GDP, researcher and author of ‘Mental Health and Wellbeing in Dentistry: A Rapid Evidence Assessment’. Commissioned by the General Dental Council
We will also highlight the Jimmy Steele Scholarship. There will be an opportunity throughout and after the session to comment on the discussion and share your memories of Professor Jimmy Steele. This event will commence on Tuesday 31st January at 18:00 GMT.

I vividly remember the first time I met Prof Steele while he was in the CSU with the BDS students. I was looking through the glass-window at the CSU entrance hesitant to enter to where the school dean was (Until D Anderson told me that he won't rebuke me at all). To my surprise he introduced me to the BDS students as an MClinDent student and he was very approachable and very friendly person. He was talking to the undergraduates about the importance of teeth and how tooth loss can affect not only humans but animals as well and interestingly he had a Bengal Tiger that lost one of his canines and how this tiger was unable to feed properly afterwards. His death is a grievous loss to the whole of the dental community.
